Of course the general movie audience wouldn't get behind the idea of the giant squid in Snyder's Watchmen, because he makes everything look "cool". Watchmen was about how dumb superheroics are in a more realistic context (at least, realistic from a psycho-sociological standpoint), and the giant squid is the ultimate proof of that. All that shit is missing because Snyder obviously didn't understand it, therefore the whole tone of the film is wrong.
