My thoughts are entirely based on hearing detailed recaps from friends who could still be bothered with the show at that point, and a few clips, but basically, the War Doctor's job once he turns up as a character is to take the attitude to our NuDocs that a classic Doctor might have taken, (without having to take the genuine risk of having Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy voice those sentiments).

It's making an opportunity out of a problem - McGann or Eccelston wouldn't have been able to take that approach, but having him be the X Doctor or 0 Doctor, someone who is the person but not the character, means he can say this stuff. It seems like it was playing on Moffat's mind that he wasn't really writing the show as it had been, and he wants to claim its entire history - where's the joy in writing a show created in 2005 to use existing IP to sell toys and give the BBC populist leverage at charter renewal time?* - so his time as showrunner has been marked and sometimes disfigured by various attempts to suture Doctor Who 2005- to the otherwise-unrelated 20th century children's programme of the same title. Soon afterwards, we get Capaldi, intended both as the return of various elements of the 1963-1989 character, and as a retconning of that character's nature. There's a kind of chronological imperialism about this - Moffat playing Time Lord.

This will come to a head with the use of Bradley's (not very accurate) Hartnell imitation to deny history itself. At least RTD knew that saying "Doctor Who was always as big as this in its heart" was sales patter.

*- Charter renewal time, for any American readers who don't know, is when the BBC are at risk of ceasing to exist - they have to make the case for their continued existence and merit to the British government, who then give them clearance to continue operating. Most of the organisation's split personality issues can be attributed to pre-renewal jitters.

Are there other "big" eps of the show you haven't watched, for similar reasons?

Ah probably wasn't you, just talked with someone with similar sentiment about Moffat's treatment of the show before.

I suspect Chibnall won't reference Classic Who a tenth as much as Moffat so I expect these discussions won't be as much a present thing in future. But if the show keeps going, one day there may be a NeoMoffat doing stuff like this to NewWho lore. An amusing thought.

I basically stopped watching years ago, I just catch the odd twenty minutes here and there, usually less. I watched most of Heaven Sent.

What were they saying? The idea of "deconstruction vs. reconstruction" sounds interesting.

Hopefully, Chibnall will drop all those references. I hope Doctor Who doesn't last another fifty years beyond a kind of Mandrake the Magician "unaccountably, this still exists" level.

>>85301342
What was the last era you enjoyed?

Well I was arguing for how the concept of reconstruction works - break something down, examine it, build it back up but with the knowledge of how it works, so the reassembling of it feels validated (easiest pop culture example is probably something like Christian Bale's Batman movies, they take apart all the on-the-face silly elements of a bat superhero then put it together in a way that works and feels validating). They were arguing that reconstruction inherently never works because...well t b h I never quite understood their point, something about how writers write for different audiences.

>I hope Doctor Who doesn't last another fifty years
I M O there will definitely be stuff like novels/audios/fan forums for many decades but I've no clue how long the show has left. TV itself is changing so much. Interesting times. But the show was cancelled and revived once, can always happen again.

I never stopped enjoying it, but I had never enjoyed *most* of it since it came back. What it had to be in order to exist prevented it from being really interesting, so eventually I checked out.

I don't recall talking about that, but we may have done. I think the idea of deconstructing in those terms is pretty pointless because nobody who didn't like Batman before will be convinced by Nolan doing it. To me, dark Batman is sillier than Adam West Batman, because the latter knows what it's really for and the former doesn't. Also, there's a pomposity. Thinking that something's more serious if you do it realistically is completely wrong. More sophistication is required to let plastic be plastic. Popular culture has a specific set of social purposes and when it goes beyond them, it is harrassing its audience, refusing to let them have a life. I've written on here about how horrific I find the moment where Bradley's Hartnell sees Matt Smith across the console from him - a moment which the drama presents as somehow justifying Hartnell's *life*.

If the person you spoke with said anything like this, it may have been me.

Chibnall had to re-write and dub a lot of the final scenes because Steven Berkoff was a total shit during filming and kept over-talking the other actors. Supposedly, Berkoff considered Doctor Who 'beneath' him and made no effort at all. So he was kinda written out and the whole end of Power of 3 hurriedly put back together.

That wasn't my point, my point was that actors have to work to pay bills and buy food for themselves and their families. They don't get to only do work they value. Some of them find it hard to cope.

Nope. Just that certain British actors consider themselves too 'distinguished' to take a role in a low budget family Saturday evening sci fi/ fantasy show.

Thespians are snobbish in that way. Which is why I respect the highly regarded actors more who agree to appear in the show and make an effort.

Rewatching The End of time, I finally understand ten's whole "i don't want to go" bitching.
The doctor realizes he's regenrating for the last time (as far as he knows). While both we and RTD didn't know about the war doctor at the time, this presents an interesting potential for what could have been a good story for the eleventh doctor. If Time of yhe doctor had been about eleven desperete for more regenerations and remembering the valeyard, we could have had something great.

Instead, the regeneration from end of time exists for meta-whining about tennant not wanting to leave
>>
>>85304579

But the idea is that the second part of the end of time was a wankfest for Tennant because normies think he is the greatest doctor. See, part two of end of time is more devotied to the fact that Tennant and RTD were leaving more than it was focused on being the regeneration story of 10

It wasn't about Tennant wanting to go as much as it was done to get a couple of twars out of the tennant fans.

Those things were great (especially Dr Who), but as someone who has hatewatched the series for ages now, and followed it all the way through the era when she was actually a companion (but got dropped unceremoniously for no longer being his girlfriend), seeing her reappear in that context was just amazing. A certain person with the surname Orford was tweeted by someone who had visited the DWE on the Saturday before Xmas filming wrapped that Capaldi wouldn't be filming on the Tuesday of that week. But only shared this info with a select few.

I'm so annoyed about this. Lots more fans (incl families with children) had planned to go to the studios on 11th July (Tuesday). Capaldi was robbed of the send off he deserved.

What is everyone's favorite episode from each NuWho season? I'm powering through it right now as I'm waiting for the Classic Who series. Two parters are allowed and if you can't decide between two post both.

Series 1
>Dalek
>This was the episode that cemented 9 as my favorite Doctor.
>It was also my first intro to the Daleks and I thought there were legitley terrifying.

Series 2
>The Impossible Planet - The Satan Pit
>This episode had an Event Horizon feel and I loved it.

Series 3
>Gridlock
>I initially hated this episode but it has grown on me and I enjoyed the design of all the cars, the creature, and the religious undertones.

Series 4
>Midnight
>Ten delivered a pulse pounding episode that takes place in a single location but nails the creepy factor. AN amazing bottle episode.

Series 5
>The Time of Angels /Flesh and Stone
>I know this is a cliched choice but this was my first episode with 11 and I was amazed that they could make statues scary.

Series 6
>The God Complex
>i don't even know where to begin. I might be wrong on this but I got a Stanley Kubrick from this episode.

Series 7
>Asylum of the Daleks
>Its not often that I consider the season opener one of the best of the season but this episode proved me wrong.

Series 8
>Listen
>I loved the design of all the sets they visit and having a monster that uses the audience's imagination against them.

Series 9
>Heaven Sent
>While it's technically part of a trilogy of episodes that round out the season, I consider this episode the best of the bunch and distinctly seprate from the preceding and proceeding episodes.

Series 10
>World Enough and Time/The Doctor falls
>This episode actually feels like a finale for this particular Doctor.
"Doctors are not required." That sentence got to me.
>>
I still dislike Clara.

>>85309532
It's not that it's a bad wig, it's that he waited until a: the only people who will ever see him have already been looking at him for years, and b: he's made it to the dream job without being impeded by his male pattern baldness. So it's pointless vanity, and vanity apparently satisfied by looking *worse*. This indicates just the kind of weakness and conformity that he displayed as a mole-like virgin antagonizing Pip and Jane Baker in 1986, and makes us wonder if he's up the challenges of his new position. Oh, and his writing is proven dogshit.
>>
>>85309840
Me too. She and Rose got on my nerves because after just a few episodes of traveling with the Doctor they both gained massively inflated egos that made them both insufferable. Rose especially. After rewatching Series 1 I thought she was a cunt through and through. The way she treated Micky was appalling and she deserved a good smack to the face to bring he down to reality.

I'm laughing at the absurdity of his behavior, yes. He got the job as a baldy, now he thinks he needs a rug.

1: Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways (still the best NuWho finale and nobody should disagree)
2: ugh Love and Monsters. This series is shit but there's definitely something unique that I love about this. The fact that the worst TARDIS crew ever doesn't appear until 5 minutes before the end helps
3: Human Nature/Family of Blood
4: Midnight. RTD's finest hour
5: A lot of good ones here, but the Eleventh Hour is the perfect introduction to the 11th Doctor
6: The Girl Who Waited. Easy. ONly good one.
7: The Crimson Horror. Only episode that rises above mediocre
8: Listen
9: Heaven Sent. Genuinely one of the best stories ever in any medium. Possibly the high point of NuWho
10: World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls. I was amazed here. After such a shitty season, we ended with a great finale.

It doesn't bode well that's he's going through a self esteem/self image crisis at the start of this project. It 's a visual display that he lacks confidence.
>>
>>85310476
How is series 2 shit? School Reunion, The Girl in the Fireplace, The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit and Army of Ghosts / Doomsday are all GOAT and the others (with the exceptions of Love and Monsters and Fear Her) are all good to great.

The wig is just so bad. It's like if he had a penis growing out of his forehead and you expect us not to comment on it. There are ways of slowly restoring your hairline and not making it so obvious. Rogaine, hair plugs, etc. Or being a man and embracing your baldness and just shaving all off or rocking a capt picard.

>>85310786
he feels more confident this way
how the hell do you think you can judge anything on that

what was /who/ like while series 6 was airing? it seems series 5 is universally loved by /who/ and series 6 universally abhorred so I'm curious what happened while that hype train was derailing

1: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances - I just love Eccleston in this episode; it's him at his best. It's a great period piece, it's hilarious, and it's also tense.

2: The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - The tone is superb, the setting is interesting, the supporting cast is good, and it has a ton of memorable moments. We've seen the same episode done several times since, but I still regard this one highly.

3: Blink - I don't think Blink is incredible, but I really hate just about every episode of series 3, so it had to be this.

4: Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - Really great setting and tone, Kingston and Tennant are great, and it's just a beautiful episode.

5: The Beast Below - Fantastic performance from Smith, and a really great ending. I think Starship UK's an interesting premise, but feel it should have been a two-parter so they could flesh that aspect out more.

6: Let's Kill Hitler - I know people hate this, and I wasn't at all keen on it the first time I saw it, but it has a phenomenal performance from Smith and Kingston, and that really sells the climax with River's sacrifice.

7: The Bells of Saint John - Great season opener, great introduction of Clara, and a fun romp with an interesting villain and a good resolution.

8: Flatline - Clara at her best, one of the most interesting villains in NuWho, and easily the best special effects in the show's history.

9: The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar - Really great episode. Capaldi at his most lovable, Missy at her most hilarious, and a pretty decent Dalek story. Feels very RTD-esque for a Moffat episode honestly.

10: The Pilot - Stellar character building for both the Doctor and Bill. Not a great "monster," but the episode knows that and uses it as a vehicle to give some great character drama.

A man who feels more confident with a Brillo pad on his head may lack discernment and a respect for others' intelligence.
>>
>>85310839
You're right. All the more power to him. I can still think it's a silly thing to do and makes him appear less than confident.
