Chibnall is actually a very diverse writer, compared to Moffat (curse his name)

It's that he likely fancies himself a fighter for women's suffrage everywhere what gets me worried about quality. And his talk about writers' room and 5 year plans.
>>
>>85291629
So you both just openly admitted to being the pedo posters.

>a writers room are both great signs for his era
It's a terrible sign. Doctor Who is horribly inconsistent, and will not be unless it's completely rebooted. It can't work with continuity.

It's an anthology show that only works because of occassional stand-alone episode being good. It can not transition to something more coherent.

I stopped watching Doctor Who when I had my fill of Moffat's writing during Matt's era. Just looked at the previous thread, saw this from Neo, in response to some saying "I hope you don't think Robert Holmes wasn't the best Who writer" (paraphrased)

>Why? It''s just another bloke online having a different opinion than you.

>I do appreciate you actually naming the names instead of just trotting out the Holmes meme (I love him but I don't like the thought-terminating "durr Holmes is unquestionably the best writer" line we hear so much).

This is the kind of writing that I wanted to see on here in the past and, with the exception of my own posts, never did. Good work. Sandifer's acceptance of the Holmes meme was the most disappointing of the many disappointing things about his project/life/physical appearance/annual income. And of course, nobody picked Neo up on this post, because they don't want to transcend the received opinions, particularly.

He's a middle-class white gay man from the 80s, so yes.

Though that isn't fair, JN-T included a rapper in a 1988 episode. He wasn't very good, but most rap wasn't very good then either.

Cheers mate. Always happy to engage with actual discussions, it drives me crazy to see thought-terminating cliches like "Holmes was the best DW writer", "X was a great Doctor but had terrible scripts", "X companion mentioned Y too much" trotted out like they're objective fact, then never actually get decently backed up, contrary opinions just get jeered at for not being the norm. Nice thing with Moff's era is it's so divisive that actual discussion kind of gets forced anyway, since so many people disagree on things now.

I'm unashamed of any and all my Doctor Who opinions even though I'm sure plenty aren't the majority. I think Steven Moffat is the best writer the show ever had. I think nu-S9 is the best series. I think Toby Whithouse is one of the worst NewWho writers. I don't think the (audio) EDAs are that great. I liked Sleep No More. Etc etc.

As for Sandifer, yeah it's weird. Whenever I think I get his mind, he'll write something so out of sorts that I just don't get it.
>>
Heya /who/vians,
I've been listening to the 8th doctor audios (with Charley) on Spotify, and they've been very good. Paul McGann is GOAT.
Unfortunately, there's only seasons 1 and 2 available, and after that Big Finish gets really pricey. Can I get some recommendations for which ones to buy so that I don't waste my money?

However iffy/repelled I feel by what the Moffat era developed into, I'm glad it's too high-profile for fans to simply dismiss or vilify its deliberate oddities, the way they did with the best of 80s Who. It has to be *evaluated*, at least, and there are always more than two sides.

>I'm unashamed of any and all my Doctor Who opinions even though I'm sure plenty aren't the majority.

Same here!

With Sandifer, I think the problem is a mixture of the way boredom sets in on long complete-ouevre blogging projects (as I've talked about before on here), the basic slenderness of some of his conceits, and the LARPing aspect - which potentially isn't a problem if you acknowledge it, the way Sandifer's hero Alan Moore does, but which Sandifer was/is too insecure to discuss.

Also, he has a postmodern "everything is text/propaganda" vulgar Derrida-ism in his attitude that was dated when he started - it makes sense that he was a provincial unemployed academic. Of course, part of this is that he doesn't understand British society except through its media, so he has to keep making out that nothing else needs to be considered, which leads to painful blind spots - his sulkiness about being pulled up for regarding the Yorkshire Ripper murders as simply a media meme because the guy had a media nickname was an nadir which will stay with me.

Last of all - the average tumblrist would know better than to use "entertainment just gets better with time" as an excuse for your own difficulties with old media.

http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/doctor-who/news/a833718/sophie-aldred-ace-doctor-who-exit/

>Spin-off books, audio plays and comic books have all given their own variations on what might've happened to the character, but actress Aldred has her own theory... and it's pretty heartbreaking.

Speaking to Digital Spy, she said: "How did Ace finally leave the Doctor? Maybe she never did. Maybe he had that heartbreaking thing of having to see his companion grow old and die.

"That could be what happened to Ace, because she never really had anywhere to go back to, or any particular relationships that she wanted to go back to.

"But I would like not to [find out what happened]. I think that it's really great to leave that as a mystery."

Ace was originally going to return to the Whoniverse in spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, until the death of lead actress Elisabeth Sladen led to the show's cancellation.

"I didn't know [at the time] but Russell T Davies had a whole couple of scenes planned out," Aldred recalled. "This sports car was going to draw up in front of Sarah Jane's house, the door opens and this very smart, besuited woman would get out... and it'd be me, as I am now.

Ahh yes we've indeed talked about it before. You see it with a lot of critics (for films or whatever else) too. They naturally get bored with the glut of content they're addressing and start having to twist it to something that personally interests them, just to keep them engaged enough to keep on writing.

Zagreus (only because it resolves the Neverland cliffhanger)
Scherzo
The Creed of the Kromon (only because it introduces a companion)
The Natural History of Fear
Skip The Twilight Kingdom
Maybe Faith Stealer
Maybe The Last
Caerdroia
The Next Life (only because it concludes an arc)
Terror Firma
Skip Scaredy Cat
Other Lives
Time Works
Maybe Something Inside
Memory Lane
Absolution (again, only because something important happens)
The Girl Who Never Was

It's a bit annoying because Zagreus, The Creed of the Kromon and The Next Life are easily the worst stories of that bunch and yet they're the most important for the arc.

I like The God Complex. Good episode.
There are elements of The Vampires of Venice I like.
A Town Called Mercy, I consider it dull more than anything else.
The Lie of the Land, Under the Lake, Before the Flood, School Reunion, to me these are terrible episodes indicative of a writer who has no idea how to iterate or take meaningful direction from a showrunner. He remains obsessed with an edgelord Doctor that calls back to the excesses of the more juvenile "adult" stories of the wilderness era rather than RTD's own "Last of the Time Lords" angst, long before even that angsty figure is swept aside in Moffat's era. He always includes a tiresome "aren't you just as bad as the monsters, Doctor!?" scene as if he's the first to think of it, and it honestly became embarrassing to me when he kept at it in the Moffat era, which had well moved beyond RTD's reprisal of that for the revival. He reduces Sarah Jane to a sexual prop, casting aside all her characterisation to make a pat point about Rose. And so on. I just find him so dull and repetitive, and to my mind he never writes stories that meaningfully work in the context of whatever series they're in (amusingly, The God Complex works better than the mess of the S6 arc - I would have loved it as a lowkey alternate finale for the Ponds).

The characters don't play their characters from Classic Who. They play new characters. It'll work for you. First time I listened to it I was unfamiliar with a lot of Classic Who, and I understood it as well as anyone.

It's not like The Five Doctors - it's not classic characters reprising classic roles. It's classic actors playing new roles.
>>
>>85295937
Well you know, this is entirely the fault of RTD and Moffat making the Doctor an identification figure. In the original show, he was an authority figure, like a surrogate teacher/uncle. It's only now he's meant to be identified with, which leads to awkward questions about who's doing the identifying and why that could have been avoided.

See, I think the Osgood boxes are more offensive because the episode actually starts off with the idea of exploring an interesting theme. Then it resolves that theme with a terrible gimmick solution that doesn't even make much sense.
Under the Lake/Before the Flood never pretends to be anything but a simple adventure story. It's a matter of expectations. The first episode doesn't set terribly high expectations, so the second didn't feel such a huge letdown to me. And the resolution is also forced, yes, but at least it makes sense.
In the land of the blind (series 9), the one-eyed man (the unambitious two-parter that would be below average in most other series) is king.

I mean, considering how much he hated them, I wouldn't put it past him.

>It's a TV show for young children, 80% of the viewers of which are boys
Yeah no.
It's a show for old fucks.

The War Doctor was a huge disappointment, he got pushed as someone so despicable that the Doctor refused to ever mention him then it turned out that he's just a nice old guy and not really that different to any other Doctor. I haven't listened to any of the BFA's with him but I've heard he's pretty much the same in them too.

That truly was patrician Doctor Who, plebs need to leave.

What's AB mean? Non-britbong here

Upper class people.

The clever thing about him was Moffat's use of him to comment on the current run's betrayal of the values of the original series. The stupid thing about him was that he existed at all.

>tfw reminded TDF was top watched show of the night, and nobody watches BBC1 early Saturday evening anymore now that Doctor Who isn't on.
>>
>>85299672
That didn't really work for me because, like, he scoffs at NewWho Doctors for kissing and being romantic...but he's post-8, who already did that
>>
>>85298403
I hate it because of being too left wing, which is a shame because otherwise it could have been a good episode.
>>
>>85299815
Well, who's to say he wouldn't have scoffed at 8 too?
>>
>>85299812
Who's going to bother watching Doctor Who now that Nardole is gone?
>>
>>85299812
Saturday night TV is dead. Doctor Who should be moved to a weekday for Series 11.
>>
>>85299815
Well this is it, within the text it doesn't work, but as "spokesman for the show we're pretending to celebrate", it works. It doesn't make sense, and it would have been more interesting coming from a less prestigious actor, but it wasn't bad. Prototype mk1 Capaldi/spirit of Hartnell is not "my unimaginably dark and evil past" material, though.

By far the spookiest thing about this is the silky smooth framerate.
