This is the most bullshit thing in all of science fiction. It makes no sense whatsoever. They neither had the time, money or man-power to create such a monstrosity, and even if they did, powering it by consuming stars so it can destroy a handful of planets is way less effective than just consuming the solar systems star in the first place. Not to mention the laser splitting in all different directions. How the fuck did they do that?

Its a bullshit machine and Star Wars and Disney should be ashamed of it.

Star Wars versus Star Trek circa 24th century

>star wars

>federation
cross the galaxy in 70 years with one of the fastest vessels

>star wars
swat asteroids out of the sky, blow up entire planets with destructive firepower alone (no technobabble shenanigans like red matter)
>federation
enterprise D spends an entire episode looking for a way to move an asteroid out of its dangerous course

>star wars
construct a 900km death star in a couple years, imperial fleet consists of thousands of star destroyers and hundreds of thousands of smaller vessels
>federation
federation has maybe a couple hundred capital ships until the dominion war demands they be able to manufacture mass quantites for bad CGI battles

>star wars
empire consists of millions of planets covering like half the galaxy
>federation
consists of ~150 member planets

>star wars
civilization has been spacefaring for over a thousand generations
>federation
has been spacefaring for 300 years

its not even a comparison. In a conventional war a single star destroyer could conquer the federation in a couple days. Federation could only win using time travel or other similar unbeatable plot devices

God, I'm sick of this stupid meme.

For one, they shoot superheated plasma bolts, not literal lasers, which the ships in Star Trek actually often do.

And in multiple pieces of media, including the current Disney stuff, a Star Destroyer's full, sustained barrage is said to be able to glass sections of a planet. I really, really don't think the Star Trek ships, which have been seriously damaged in ship to ship combat before, are going to survive that for long unless they do do some stupid, technobabble bullshit and teleport a torpedo in or something like all their action plots rely on.

No they don't. The Star Wars extended universe went on to explain that they weren't lasers. But the EU was killed... so it's back to being lasers.

I can give you a quick rundown just to spark your interest:

(1/2)

Sometime in the late 20000s, mankind loses its grip on technology and becomes a smattering of barbarian tribes using tech they barely understand. Across the galaxy, various human civilizations lose contact with one another and descend into anarchy. On Earth, a figure called the Emperor, who has been alive since BC times (and is somewhat implied to be Jesus along with many other historical figures) unites the tribe using an army of "Thunder Warriors", genetically enhanced super soldiers. He later upgrades this design by drawing up plans for Space Marines, which comes about in the form of 20 Primarchs, the Emperor's "sons". However, the Gods of Chaos, whom the Emperor was created to destroy, don't like that, so they teleport the infant primarchs across the galaxy. The Emperor eventually reunites with all of them, now fully grown, and in the process both uses their gene seed pattern to create an army of Space Marines and conquers the rest of human space on a "Great Crusade". Unfortunately, at the dawn of the 30th millenium, Horus, one of the Primarchs, becomes corrupted by Chaos and turns against the emperor, bringing nine of the other Primarchs with him. This is known as the Horus Heresy, and it culminates in a battle between Horus and the Emperor where Horus is killed and the Emperor is mortally wounded, so he's preserved inside the Golden Throne, a vessel that allows him to take control over the Astronomican, the beacon that assists in humanity's form of hyperspace travel, which basically consists of dipping their ships into the Warp (Hell) and praying they don't get eaten by space demons before they (maybe) reach their destination. After that, there's basically just constant war for ten thousand years between the Imperium and the Chaos Space Marines, the Eldar (really evil elves), the Tau (space communists), the Tyranids (giant fleshballs with a hivemind),
>>
>>85306865

(2/2)

the Necrons (metal skeletons created by an even more ancient race), and Orks (space orcs that speak with Cockney accents and are basically Mad Max: the Civilization). The universe is really really expansive, and there's a metric shitton of lore that gets expanded upon every day, so don't expect to know everything. This is probably the most barebones explanation I can give you, and that's just a brief history of the Imperium, not even mentioning all the other factions and gods and shit.
>>
>>85306865

I'm sure SW "lore", whatever is left of it, has engagements at large ranges too. If you put 40k space combat in something like a video game or TT, it will be just as close-ranged as SW is.

Besides, you're missing the point. Having reliable and fast FTL means Empire could just pull its forces in an armored first and jump planet from planet, glassing them, while Imperium has to use dangerous and less reliable Warp travel. I mean FFS, in SW they put hyperdrives on fucking starfighters because reasons.

No, but GW could easily use cawl to do that.
Bobby G overcomes the inferior logistics problem, and gives them a strategic genius at the helm who BTFOs any SW general. Also, you're completely over exaggerating the slowness of the warp, and ignoring the fact that star wars engages in space at pitiful ranges compared to 40k. Faster FTL doesn't matter when you're being boarded by a bunch of terminators. Star wars simply won't win a land war against the imperium, they have little if any weapons that can get past a void or gellar field and even they're ability to destroy planets isn't that much of an advantage since the imperium can beat much more powerful versions, like the world engine.
But good for them, they're faster, guess they'll put that to good use when they're running away.
>>
>>85309787
Cadia destroyed, ends up with the eye of terror now spreading across the galaxy through the middle, cutting e imperium in half. Roboute guilliman comes back, having been cured by an ad mech guy he commissioned back in M31 to look at upgrading space marines and fixing other stuff. Guy had been working for 10k years making a new breed of astartes that are bigger and have new armor and stuff. Guilliman begins unfurling everything, ad mech are starting to come to their v tanks errywhere, custodes have started crusading with marines and guard again. Chaos has decided to start really fucking things up now that they can attack the entire galaxy with impunity. Orks won vs Nids, tau are shit and went full gundam, eldar changed their name, became a death cult trying to kill themselves in battle to awaken their death God to kill off slaanesh. It's finally the end times and everybody is starting to come back. Daemon primarchs are cutting out territories in real space now, Angron decided he wanted in on the fight for Armageddon again, so now it's a three way battle.

Sort of, everything now has Keywords, and you can make a detachment using any keyword, and you can take in that detachment any unit with that keyword. However, their are benefits for taking more specific keywords (like <CHAPTER> rather than just IMPERIUM), like Chapter tactics.
>Before I quit I kind of wanted to paint up a traitor guard army. If I bought the Chaos half that could tie in nicely.
FW made Renegades and heretics, which is sort of like traitor gaurd, with some special rules to make them chaosy. The Rules of them is in the OP in the 40k general on /tg/. They're not the most powerful army (though that's in 8th terms, which has nowhere near the balance issues of previous editions) but CSM are quite powerul and will be getting their codex quite soon, with Legion rules, CSM unique stratagmes and all that nice stuff

Well their coolest stuff was pretty much Death Star equivalent, and they weren't exactly easy to persuade to help. I was thinking more of the younger races, I mean Minbari have some neato tech but the sheer size of SW Empire, which is... like as big as a Galaxy, or at least half as big, right - would probably crush them.

Telepaths are cool, but they were only really super-effective against Shadows, who use sentient beings as their ship cores.
