The vault contains a device for controlling the singularity of a black hole, a nascent god that is perhaps an AI that can assume humanoid appearance similar to the Moment. It may also be somehow warping reality to allow the Doctor to remain in disguise while retaining his apparent appearance.

McCoy is pretty nice so far tho.

There aren't really any (at least at the moment) that directly deal with the transitions from one to the next. 8 has his own self-contained era(s) of stories, War has his self-contained box sets. It's really just a matter of how much of them you want to get into. If you want to follow the whole of any particular companion arc, you will have a fair amount of listening to do one way or the other.

8 will be getting his own Time War audios at some point in the future, so you might like those as a prequel to Night of the Doctor if they turn out well.

I don't think the BBC see it that way. She's a well known and liked actress straight from one of the biggest dramas of recent years, on a show with a viewerbase known for complaining intensely about change but sucking it up regardless (and in this case it's a change that people have been speculating about forever and a day). Just in general I don't think "Doctor Who fails miserably" is something that's meaningfully on their radar of possibilities, because as long as it's stuck with its weekly adventuring 45 minute kiddy friendly formula, it never really has.
