>>
>>85071409
Name a single original or good thing about him content-wise. Adjustments to modern life have already been covered a million times in the 10's and 20's even in Chinese cinema. Just transplant it to 90's and early new millennium. I don't even have to demand an answer for formal innovations since he obviously has none.
>>
aeltbx quit grazing over wikipedia and actually learn some history and theory before you pretend like you know anything.
>>
If anybody in this general actually had taste or a semblance of film histry knowledge, they'd know one of the films on the 3x3 I posted last general featured a film that was similar to the content of and far better to anything Jia Zhangke could ever hope to make.

>Formal innovations.
One of the most superficial aspects of films. Basically non sequitur here. About to be as useless comment as "dat cinematography wev bro wooo pee pee poo!"

And Zhangke has told us stories about China in a fascinating, brilliant way.

>adjustments to modern life already told in 10's and 20's
Again the superficial pseudo commentary of the Redditor rears its ugly head, unable to write anything longer about Zhangke's critique of new China because either he hasn't seen his films or he is simply unable to understand their context and significance, because they speak more than the Redditor is unable to grasp, since they are more than just technical showcases.
>>
>>85071834

No he hasn't, and you couldn't even explain why you think so if you tried because you're just a braindead festivaldrone.

to the Redditor among us film is nothing but a technical showcase. He is doomed to like formally innovative films just because - he is unable to grasp the significance of films that transcend the medium away from just a byproduct of work and production, that makes it art. He will be doomed to defend his position with a failed utilitarian approach where each film becomes just a means to an end, to a next film and next formal innovation. He will never be able to understand the narrative and context of the films, or the moods, and what the film might mean to someone else. Where others see beauty and poetry in motion, the Redditor will see just a Kantian means to an end. Film is not art to him; it is just a product of work, devoid of higher transcendentalism, finding One, Truth, Beauty.

I have zero knowledge what has or has not been shown in film festivals over the past 120 years.

The fact that your neural assocation with Zhangke's critique is "no u", just speaks louder about your own neural network that is unable to connect his films to a larger than film itself context.

It speaks of your pea sized brain.
>>

"The most beautiful single shot I have seen in any movie is the battle charge in The Birth of a Nation. I have heard it praised for its realism, and that is deserved; but it is also far beyond realism. It seems to me to be a perfect realization of a collective dream of what the Civil War was like, as veterans might remember it fifty years later, or as children, fifty years later, might imagine it. I have had several clear mental images of that war, from almost as early as I can remember, and I didn’t have the luck to see “The Birth of a Nation” until I was in my early twenties; but when I saw that charge, it was merely the clarification, and corroboration, of one of those visions, and took its place among them immediately without seeming to be of a different kind or order. It is the perfection that I know of, of the tragic glory that is possible, or used to be possible, in war; or in war as the best in the spirit imagines or remembers it. "

Thoughts? How pleb is my taste

And how the fuck do some of you find the time to watch 400+ films a year?
>>
>>85097685
why even post your profile in this chat if you don't watch anything of worth? what do you expect us to say?
also some of us (not I though) watch more than one feature length a day. Personally I can't do that because I like to concentrate fully on a film then think about it after i've watched it but yeah

400 a year isnt that hard when there's 365 days in a year, just means you watched more than one film a day
>>
I literally just learned because of this thread, that he passed away. I had the privilege to meet him at Comic Con though. He seemed nice, but very tired.
>>
>>85097685
With your pace you'll end up around 300 so it's not that far off. You spelled "Recommend" wrong btw.

>>
>>85097839
Most of the last while has been garbage or just mainstream stuff I wanted to get out of the way, but if you go further back there's less terrible stuff

I don't know. I guess I want to improve my knowledge and ability to analyze movies, but I find it's hard to even find out about certain films. I've seen people give better/alternate reccomendations to the favourite films of others, which is something I'd like.

Also, are the films on my profile/favourites list in that poor taste? They are the ones I genuinely enjoy the most (Blue, tree of life, inside llewyn davis ect)

if you like them now then you like them but once you've seen more your favs are (obviously) gonna change
imo follow everyone in this thread and unfollow those that watch garbage until everything you see on your dashboard is interesting, watch the ones people have liked and then you'll become patrician through osmosis
make sure you watch classics as well
ALSO
AVOID ALL CAPESHIT AND OBVIOUSLY SHIT MOVIES
You can watch oscar nominees to keep up with the cultural zeitgeist but c'mon man, don't watch spiderman and complain about not learning
Put in some effort
>>
Don't avoid The Amazing Spider-Man 1-2 though cause those are amazing

If "style" is "what makes it good" that's an argument.
If "style" is a component of "what makes it good" the other elements require proper definition.

Is a blanket statement, ill-applied in this context and elucidating nothing.

Both the theatrical and extended cuts are great. I didn't always hold this view, and preferred the theatrical, but lately I've come around to appreciating both.

Theatrical

Extended
>more scenes with Trudy and Tubbs
>more scenes with Isabella and Crockett

your nonsense
A great film's form and content are inexplicably entwined and cannot be separated out into discrete parts. You may have a different definition of greatness in film, but this is the only one I'm interested in.

Oh, here comes the "horror speaks to a deep human need" bullshit. No, it speaks to the morbidity of little boys who were not too bright at school. There's a reason it has such a crossover with metal fans.
