Yep, both him and Brie Larson did a great job (and to be fair, I had no idea who "Old nick" was, they did a good job of making him look well past his usual self).
But the kid seemed a little too well adjusted for the situation.

think it makes the awkward acting less noticeable. part of it is that the dialogue itself is kind of cringey, whether or not it was intentional, it's like the kind of thing you'd imagine saying in a revenge fantasy you're having in your head in the shower or something.

yeah I'm guessing this is one OZ or AZ webming. Do you think gory footage of Roos dying is more or less triggering to you guys than it is to ferners?
I get that they're kind of a bunch of giant faggoty rats but they also look like goofy dogpeople that I want to be bestfriends with.
>>84944919
snowtown didn't fuck with me as much as some movies. They did a great job of showing how psychopaths function irl and stuff but like Henry: Portrait of a serial Killer and Killer Inside Me and the new Maniac kind of stayed with me longer probably. Still a good ass movie though.
>>84944950
Might be the case. I was kinda startling to see real animals being shot up, but the fact they where roos wasn't like "OMG, its roos" it was "Comon, put them down."
Only been to Oz once visiting inlaws who immigrated there.Roo meat is tasty too
>>84945146
This is an old ass movie, were they really shooting kangaroos here?
>>84945122
Snowtown fucked with me a lot more then "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" did. Then again, I went in not knowing what Snowtown was about, while "Henry" I knew going in.
Snowtown also has a Roo getting killed scene IIRC. (They butcher one to dump on some guys porch. Been a while)
>>84945175yes
though now Aus has a huge overpopulation of Roos and Camels from what I understand.
>>84945175
you betcha
>The hunt lasted several hours, and gradually wore down the filmmakers. According to cinematographer Brian West, "the hunters were getting really drunk and they started to miss, ... It was becoming this orgy of killing and we [the crew] were getting sick of it." Kangaroos hopped about helplessly with gun wounds and trailing intestines. Producer George Willoughby reportedly fainted after seeing a kangaroo "splattered in a particularly spectacular fashion". The crew orchestrated a power failure in order to end the hunt.[20]

If you haven't you should check out Magic Magic from a few years ago if you're into frustrating and uncomfortable movies about the protagonist going insane in a foreign environment. I think it's Juno Temple and Michael Cera's best performances.
It's a slow simmer movie about a girl going crazy alone in a Peru or wherever, I went in expecting more of an thriller and initially had some pedestal disappointment but I've found I think about that movie a lot.

Try:
Utu (like a Western but with Maori)
What We Do In The Shadows (comedy about vampires in NZ)
Quiet Earth (Weird post-apocalyptic thriller)
The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey (Fucking gorgeous art film I've thought about webming before)
Meet the Feebles (Peter Jackson does the Muppets on acid)
River Queen (Slow paced period drama, not very popular but I liked it)
>>84945910
not NZ and never been there but:
All of Jackson's early shit and a bunch of other schlock horror movies from the 80s and 90s.
That sheep movie.
What we Do in the Shadows and everything that the Flight of theConcords have done.
Jackson and Cameron want it to become Nu-Hollywood.
That's what I think of when I think of NZ.

>The horror I like is Wicker man/Ravenous/the shining.
You'd like Babadook. It's like 80% psychological horror. I think you could probably view the entire story as it all just being the unreliable protagonist mom going insane. Has a lot of the same kind of themes and tone as the machinist with the sleep deprivation and definitely the Shining.

>>84946734
>I was amazed at the excellent Kiwi accent Hopkins used in this, about the only foreign actor I've ever seen do it
Will keep that in mind. It always annoys me that movies and TV shows assume there is only three accents in the south of the US.
- The Athens georgia accent
- The Texan accent
- The Cajun accent.
When there are states in the South east that have 4-5 major accents just within the state.
>>84946965
Aussie and Kiwi accents pretty much sound identical to foreign ears so most actors who play Kiwis wind up doing some form of Aussie accent
We can certainly tell them apart though
Hopkins was a notable exception to the rule and is a reflection of his talent I think
>>84944004
>>84941048

>>84947082
The thing I recall about Kiwis is
Buh instead of But
Schoow instead of School
and Wellington is pronouced like it has a u like Wullington.
>>84947213
Good way of testing someone: get them to say the number "six"
Kiwis will say "sux"
Aussies will say "sex"
Generally Kiwis flatten vowels and Aussies pinch them
>>84946965
As a person with a mid-atlantic accent I got triggered by McNulty in the Wire a lot. When I'm in uk or wherever they don't know what the fuck accent I have. "Why do you sound like southerner from New York?"
