Spending an episode showing the events that gave Dracula his motivation was more satisfying to me than a brief flashback down the road would've been. In Utena, the characters and their motivations and actions are richer and make more sense the more you pay attention to what is going on, including the visuals (which are more significant in their own right than they are in most anime and can't be neglected in favor of only caring about the dialog).

I find this opinion very interesting, because I always considered the Japanese to use body language very much. Just look at preety much all idol stuff, Sailor Moon and shit, there's many poses and such, that I believed was based in the heavy rely of body language. It also is very proeminent in sentais and Kamen Rider, being impossible to see their faces. My guess is that the time travel stuff is probably part of a long term plot thread influenced by the mysterious characters from those games. Especially that part about the sleeping warrior legend.

Also, in some games Dracula's castle has a "Tower of Science" section with laser turrets and other futuristic shit. It's maybe possible they added in the time travel stuff as justification for including such a section.

The first season was basically prologue. I expect the next eight episodes to be more familiar as the characters progress through the various sections of Dracula's Castle.

Though that said, Trevor fighting the Cyclops and saving Sylpha who had been turned to stone and Trevor fighting Alucard before joining forces are both taken right out of the game. In the next season there should be a fourth character joining them as well, if it continues to follow the game.
