But in terms of the story of World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls (which are the only terms that really matter, since that's the story we're talking about) it was a deus ex machina. It LITERALLY was. Because we're not talking about the whole series here, we're talking about a single, self-contained story. In the case of, say, The Wedding of River Song, which was the end of a story arc, it was acceptable to bring back stuff from earlier in the series.
