Moments like this made it a great episode. Just the characters talking to each other about meaningful things. When I heard about Simm, I was expecting a fun fanwank episode but the scenes with the Master and the Doctor, or the two Masters, were genuinely dramatic at times. Missy's last scene was especially good.

Sort of puts Chibnall in an odd/interesting position if he ever wants to bring the Master back.

Alright, that was several orders of magnitude better than Hell Bent.
I have some minor criticisms, mainly on the way the Masters were used and Heather solved everything, but on the whole it was the best Moffat finale and a solid contender for best finale ever alongside Parting of the Ways.

I thought it was really solid too, which I wasn't expecting. My favourite Moffat finale. I only have some minor complaints with it. The mondasian cybermen getting super powers was pretty bad for example, and Heather coming back and saving the day felt forced but Moffat needed a way to write Bill out so I can't really be mad at him for that.

I don't think it's really the same. There is far less ambiguity with what Missy did. Simm's Master attacked Rassilon because he was mad at him for what the Time Lords did to him. That was the main driving force behind his actions, not to save the Doctor. Missy was the opposite. She went against her own interests to stand with the Doctor.

And yeah, I get that Chibnall can just wordlessly brush aside Missy's arc if he wanted to. But I think he's a better writer than that. I think he'd know that it's more interesting to do something new with the hand you're dealt instead. Hopefully.

Not that expect the Master to be back any time soon. Probably another 2 - 3 years.

I thought that as an actor, he was superb. He slid straight back into the role as if no time had passed.
But he was so under utilised. They already shot themselves in the foot by letting it spoil that he was in it for the first half, but in the second half... The "last time" opening made his reveal so unimportant, he was basically dealt with in the first five minutes and was basically just along for the ride for the rest of it. The only real notable scene with him in this episode was his final scene.
I mean, what a waste of a great opportunity.

I think he was great and while I understand what you mean, I can't see what else they could've done with his character.

Missy being the current Master obviously deserved the character arc more than he did, and he was there to add another layer of depth to that. It worked well, I thought. And we got little details that I loved, like him practicing doing eyeliner in preparation for when he's Missy. That was cute and I was impressed that Moffat had the restraint required to not overexplain it with dialogue.

No they aren't. Series 8 had moments, but series 9 and 10 were both a good deal lower and it's only getting worse (averaging around 4 million an episode now at the end of Capaldi's tenure, vs the 6-7 million near the end of Smith's). The Appreciation Indexes have also been lower through Capaldi's entire run, with series 9 having the lowest on average in the history of the show.

UtL/BtF is skippable, but the first part is pretty gud. The Zygon two-parter is skippable in that it does nothing for the overall plot of the season, but you'd miss Capaldi's best performance after Heaven Sent. Also it goes without saying, but Sleep No More can and should be skipped.
