We might revisit what became of Lillard's character but it in hindsight it mostly set up the grand manipulation of which Mr C is capable, evidenced by his connection to Lillard's characters' wife which possibly led to him being able to frame the murder of the apartment woman/ Briggs to someone else entirely. Dougie is already very much a tragic character in the text of the show. Whilst he is capable of intelligent thought and feats of highly skilled professionals like Squeezing his Hand Off it's almost like they want us to process his retarded behaviour as a result of 25 years living on a higher spiritual plain. If Coop survived for 25 years in the black lodge his mind would be mush compared to earthbound humans, it's just operating in entirely different ways now.

It will be discovered by Hawk and the others what happened, that bad Coop was a doppelgänger and the real Coop died 25 years ago, more or less. As someone on tpg said this week, Coop more or less has no story left, his name and reputation was ruined by Bad Coop, and after those confusions are cleared up, story wise he serves little function. His character has already done the most heroic acts, and after that there is only death. Stranger Things is one of those shows you know is shit because of the fans it garners. Similar case with Big Bang Theory

The one thing I'll say about all this old cast member drama is that while Lynch has absolutely every right to make the story he wants to make, and if Kyle is the only one out of the bunch who is featured consistently then so be it, but I do think the advertising behind this was pretty misleading. Everything from the photoshoots to the EW cover story featured the original cast heavily and made it seem like they were going to feature into it as much as they did in the original series. Again, Lynch should follow his vision, but it seems really disingenuous to have all these big promotions featuring the return of your favorite characters like Audrey and Big Ed and Ben, which definitely would've convinced old school fans to tune in, and then not use them at all.
