I've always preferred this to I Am The Doctor

Trying to figure out why I don't like Bill. It seems her main "thing" is putting complete faith in the Doctor, but unlike Amy, there's not much the Doctor did to warrant it - he's just her professor. Maybe the Doctor saving her life in "Oxygen" was the turning point, but that episode was so busy with the Doctor's blindness and the contents of the vault that tying Bill's characterization to it is kind of weak. Her motivation could be her love life, but I'd be surprised if I ever saw Heather or Penny again. Maybe it's being a bookworm who jumps at the chance at seeing science fiction without the fiction, but that particular trait is only used in service of throwaway jokes.

On the other hand, is there anything wrong with a companion that's just along for the ride?

Last episode felt like an RTD-era spaceship episode.

Those were always the best. Lots of dark, industrial-looking sets with random blue screens and teal lighting everywhere.

It's not purely subjective. We're not arguing whether a character is likeable or not, there are plot points and character traits that exist independent of interpretation or personal preference. Amy Pond, River Song, and Clara Oswald's lives all revolve around the Doctor. They have no identity of their own, no families, no friends, highly stereotyped personalities, no careers (until series 8, but that's debatable, since it's more window-dressing than integral to the character), only male lovers they're destined to be with. Amy's entire arc is "was abandoned by the Doctor and that literally formed the basis of my entire life, do I want to be with nice-guy Rory or with the Doctor?", River's arc was "I was created to kill the Doctor but then I fell in love with him over thirty seconds and now I spend the rest of my life trying to get his attention and make him love me", and Clara's was "I am an unimportant blank slate until I saved the Doctor!". She sporadically develops "bossiness" as a personality trait in series 8 and starts to make some progress with Danny Pink and being a teacher, so I'll give props there. Bill's another let-down though, with her entire family killed off prior to the series start and maybe 50 seconds in total devoted to her foster mum.

Whereas Rose, Martha, and Donna all had individual supporting casts, personalities, jobs that in some way related to their arc (Donna's temp'ing and her insecurity about her own abilities or importance, Rose's dead-end job and her boredom with an ordinary, average life, Martha's career and her decision to devote herself to helping heal people and abandon reckless adventure).

These aren't really disputable, since they're brought up in the scripts themselves.
