Memorable side characters from series 10:

Memorable side characters from series 1:
Clive, Cassandra, Charles Dickens, Harriet Jones, Margaret Blaine, Henry Van Statten, Nancy, Dr. Constantine, Lynda with an Y.

> Last Christmas
Too dreary for my tastes. I found the constant fake-outs more annoying than intriguing

> Husbands
Genuinely enjoyable schlock for the first half (based Nardie), heartfelt second half with a great ending/sendover for River

> Mysterio
Surprisingly entertaining. Was expecting Justin Chatwin to do a shit job but he carried the whole thing. Decent special.

So 2/3 ain't bad in my books. If the grand finale sticks the landing he'll have more good specials than bad (which is more than I can say for Smith).

No, but that's shifting the goalposts. They were literally extras. Bills housemates however were secondary characters supporting an entire plot with Bill.

>Can you name all of Martha's family without googling them?
Tish, Francine... but that's still 2 who are memorable, I can't even remember Bill's mum's name, or her stepmum's.

>Can you name everybody that was at Jackie's wedding without googling them?
See first answer.

Also, nice of you to leave out Rose's family... who were pretty much all memorable, right down to Jackie's baby Tony (because at least it's a funny line you in Journey's End that helps you remember it).

>He's absent for episode 3 only, but shown to be sleeping/resting.
It's been a long time since I've seen the episode, but he's sleeping alone in a room right? 12 could materialise the TARDIS there, pick him up, and drop him off later. It's ridiculous, but it's plausible.

Personally, I'd rather it not literally be 1 and rather some sort of mental manifestation of him. That way it'd explain why he doesn't look like Hartnell and frees them up to do just about anything.

>>84356096
I'm already picturing that 12 is at the south pole in the scene we've seen, so while he's stumbling out of the TARDIS and regenerating, 1 is not far away stumbling into his TARDIS and regenerating.

HYPED for Christmas special.
>>
>>84356185
She is bland but most people are. She had a real life, not just a paper thin surface like Bill.
>>
>>84356110
She's a medical student with an overbearing mum, a dad who's seemingly buggered off with a yappy blonde; in her third episode she refuses to put up with the doctor's bullshit and demands some answers as to who he is; she's smart enough to hold her own when seperated from the Doctor; her being black is only ever mentioned once which is way better than Bill's racial/sexuality handling; she's caring towards Creet and literally walks the planet in vain to tell people about the Doctor.

Bill serves chips, is generally nice, has generic friends suddenly for just one episode, has a dead mum, a stepmum, and reminds everyone she's a lezzer. And gets turned into a Cyberman.

I mean, fine, ignore everything else. But even her being a medical student means she has aspirations, a career goal - and her shitty family seem to want to drag her down.

Bradley's performance was good in An Adventure in Space and Time, but it was clear that he decided to focus more on being believable emotionally and less on imitating Hartnell. Having him show up in Doctor Who itself, he needs to be more accurate.

Also, I don't think you can call a departure "intentional" if it's due to failing health reasons. The producers did a good job of allowing him to leave with dignity, but he was going whether he wanted to or not.
>>
>>84356764
Fair enough. Bradley is about 20 years older too, and it shows, so some suspension of disbelief is required.

A thought though: if he's showing up during Tenth Planet, the 1st Doctor was frail and wearing thin anyway so maybe Bradley will pull it off.
>>

>>
>>84356342
>had to surrender the role he originated to Troughton
It wasn't nowhere near as dramatic as in that movie, anon. Hartnell wasn't fired, he left on his own, and he recommended Troughton as his replacement in the first place.
Hartnell will always be the real 1st Doctor, regardless of how many other actors take on the role, but this is a case of the character outgrowing the actor. Do you suppose they should retire Darth Vader once James Earl Jones kicks the bucket?
>>
>>84356777
He could've quit a lot earlier (IIRC they were writing ways to replace him with another actor if need be in the stories as early as Season 2) and I think hey probably could've stayed on a bit longer, but you're right. He went out at the right time IMO.

This. There is no connection with a real life, just enough to hint at it from time to time. Moffat can't or don't write characters. He only care about the dramatic scenes, but dramatic scenes are flat without characters you connect with and care about. The only characters he can make are those that are just comic relief. That doesn't need any depth.

The good thing with Moffat is that he is so bad that you can learn a lot from how he do things. He is like George Lucas in a way.

I invested in Donna as a person because we saw her interrupt her travels briefly to go home, talk it over with an astonished Wilf, keep the secret from her mum, etc. She felt real in a way that Bill, for example, doesn't (IMO). Bill feels much more like a character that they tag bits on to in the hope that people care about her. Her mum only comes up when the plot needs an emotional moment. Same with Clara - her gran only popped up twice, when the episode wanted a moment of sadness or whatever. Whereas I felt like, watching Donna, you felt that Wilf was back home waiting for her to come back, and her mum was probably wondering where she was, etc. I don't get any of that from Bill's stepmum, or Clara's family, and hell Amy gets her parents back in a very emotional finale but then they never pop up or get mentioned ever again.

I have no fucking idea what that mess was. The problem with Clara was that her relationship just seemed strange since she was so alien without connections. But that might be just my interpretation since I didn't care for her at all.

>guy literally pulls off a rubber mask and reveals that he was actually the Master the whole time
the episode was going so well until this ass pull of a twist.

What's wrong with that?

So the hand regenerating in the Next Time trailer is clearly the Doctor healing his hand with some energy. Maybe the whole process has begun at this point, and he uses a bit but holds it off (hence 'nooooo' cos he still wants more time)
>>
>>84357576
It ruined the tension the episode had been buidling up, took away from the cyberman reveal and pretty much promised the next episode will focus on the master/mistress.
>>
>>84356863
>Do you suppose they should retire Darth Vader
Yes
>>
Why did the Mondasian crew even settle in the far end of the ship to begin with? Why didn't they just walk back?
>>
>>84357545
That's exactly the kind of thing the Master would do, though.
>>
>>84357664
It will be explained later

>People actually want a return to EastEnders in space
Jesus Christ
>>
>>84357644
Maybe regeneration is like edging, and he was trying to stop himself from fully committing to the regeneration.
>>
>>84357727
No, people just want a return of realistic and relatable characters.

Even Hartnell era had better characters because Ian and Barbara were worrying about real world and their reactions to space stuff happening was realistic

>>
>>84357752
I hate this "relatable character" meme I mean why the fuck do you need to relate to a person in the TV what are you fucking autistic?
All that matters is the story
>>
Im going to be honest the ''eastenders in space'' thing is what made the show great, how wacky tennant was jumping all over the place talking nonsense and technobabble. People loved that and it's what made them tune in every weak. RTD wasn't afraid to bring in weird aliens and monsters and went truly dark but had an overall balance of excitement and fun.

Moffat made everything too serious and now it just looks like 1000 other generic dark brooding sci fi shows.

Bring on Chibnall.
>>
>>84357805
Clara had a real world boyfriend all through S8 and the whole point of the car accident was to kill off all her ties with the real world and convince her to make The Doctor her new life, setting into motion her arc for S9 as she becomes more and more reckless and like the doctor
>>
>>84357842
They stopper letting jannies delete threads, now they can only autosage them. They're doing this a lot.
>>

>>
>>84357894
So you're fine with cyphers, 2D characters, non-entities, etc? Don't you want actual real-feeling characters to invest in?

Why would anyone give a shit about Bill being turned into a Cyberman if she's a fucking non-entity?

>>
>>84357915
I'd agree with you. RTD Who was pretty much 'drama with sci-fi trappings'; Moffat Who is 'sci-fi fantasy'... even when they do land on Earth, it doesn't quite feel 'real' in the same way RTD's Earth did.

The worst thing is that it doesn't even feel special compared to other 'sci-fi' tv shows. CW Legends of Tomorrow is the same thing, wacky characters in timey wimey setting with sci-fi.
