I'm watching this season with my father and he pointed out some stuff:
1. In the original seasons, Gordon, played by David Lynch himself, wears earphones and talks loud; in this season he's deaf and talks loud. In both cases it could be him saying that Lynch "doesn't listen to the rest" and does things his way.
2. Some episodes ago, we see that Gordon's office has a picture of an atomic explosion and one of Franz Kafka. In last night's episode we see several atomic explosions (apparently meant to represent the origin of this supernatural evil); and the whole situation of the Twin Peaks story could be described as kafkaesque. I said it made sense, but I wondered why would those pictures be in Gordon's office if Gordon doesn't seem to understand what's happening; then my dad repeated that Gordon is played by David Lynch. So it wasn't Gordon's pictures, they're Lynch's.

Is all the crazy shit we see legit "backstory" or did the woodsmen/black lodge go back in time to make those things happen as a result of dopplecoop getting shot?

Like it doesn't compute for me how the Giant is old in 1945 but young in 1990 when Cooper sees him if this is all supposed to have happened prior to season 1

Fantastic episode, the best yet.
The tribal dance of the death of bad coop, with muted sound and synths, muted colors, was stellar. And then we move straight to the music show that was normally reserved for the end of an episode, after 10 minutes.
Lynch finally dropped any pretense of substance in favor of style, and his style is fantastic enough to become substance. I loved the use of low contrast, and there was some really cool "camera"work (my favorite was when the camera starts at the bottom of the pink mountain and the waves and you can't tell what's going on, before moving upwards and discovering the fortress upon a mountain, allowing you to finally understand the context of what you've been shown). The sound design was A+ and helped reinforce the moments of uncanny valley that Lynch does so well.

The plutonium used in the construction of the nuclear bomb for the Trinity test was manufactured at the Hanford Site, a nuclear facility in Washington state. In The Secret History of Twin Peaks (which includes a two-page photo spread of the Hanford Site on pages 118-119) mentions that that the land on which the Hanford Site was built was seized from the Nez Perce tribe in 1942 and that they were forcibly relocated (which, again, is actually true). An obvious connection to season 3 is that Hawk is a "full-blooded" Nez Perce and the way he discovered the missing pages of Laura Palmer's diary was through the Nez Perce logo in Part 6.

But The Secret History mentions that when the Nez Perce were originally removed from their land in the 19th century, Chief Joseph warned one day there would "come a reckoning." Perhaps the bomb (or, more accurately, BOB and the Lodge coming through/from the bomb) was this prophecy coming true, and BOB/the Lodge's malevolent influence on the town was the "reckoning" mentioned by Chief Joseph?

It's also worth noting that the Archivist concludes Harold Dahl's 1947 UFO encounter (which kickstarted the popular "alien" phenomena and UFOlogy) wasn't a UFO at all. It was instead the US Air Force dumping nuclear waste from the Hanford Site into the nearby Columbia River and the local environment, which would have included the nearby Twin Peaks. The town of Twin Peaks again suffers (indirectly) from the Trinity test.

But the most interesting thing of all is exactly where Hanford is located. Its geographical co-ordinates are 46°35′01″N 119°23′16W. Cooper's doppelganger is looking for co-ordinates from Ray, and The Giant tells Cooper to "remember 430" — not four-hundred-and-thirty, but specifically "four-three-zero". Also curious is the fact the degree of longitude is "119", the number Drugged-Out Mother has shouted in two separate episodes.
