I love DougieCoop. I feel bad for those who dont, but to me it's profound and beautiful.

When we meet Coop initially in Season 1, he is the person who somehow has the most awareness of what is going on at a given moment. He has nigh supernatural intuition, and can read people with eerie accuracy. This is of course the big reason that the end of season 2 packs such a punch. Our powerful, disciplined, and fundamentally noble protagonist has been worn down by the forces at play to become the literal opposite of those things.

Now, the fundamentally good version of Cooper has returned, and thankfully lacks the disturbing malice that makes Mr. C such a fright but he is not the "agent" of change in the story. He cannot lead us confidently through the clues. He is helpless. Even EvilCoop retains efficiency and efficacy, pulling strings and executing schemes. Those skills and abilities, though impressive when channeled through a noble Dale Cooper, are not fundamentally "good" in themselves.

This is a tough pill to swallow, but... a frail Coop's joys, his small victories, his small amounts of progress towards complexity of understanding, thought, and expression... they become joys that we can share. Yes, that means signing on for the frustrating limitations, the inability to confidently move through the story as the man with the plan, but doesn't that more accurately reflect the amount of power and agency we often have in our own lives? How much of our continued success depends on those around us responding to us with approval? How many of us have a strong sense of self and identity that would remain cohesive if all of the circumstantial trappings of our lives disappeared? These are tough questions, and the show asks them, yet there is little in this world I could buy or obtain that would bring me the kind of profound joy I felt when Coop decided to share his chips with with Sonny Jim. I understand why this story isn't for most, but I am still very glad it is what it is.

i think that's what the show was originally meant to be and what the bumper crop of similar shows around the same time did different (northern exposure, picket fences, the keys) in not revealing supernatural forces at play (like american gothic did)

Showtime really dropped the ball by not hiring Chris Hardwick for a Talkin' Peaks aftershow.

I like the concept but he's wasting too much time. The short sequence in new mexico with the young couple shows how much Lynch didn't loose anything of his skills. I need more of this.
Some other parts of this episode still feels as a big "fuck you", especially after the sweeping scene from the last episode.

I don't think it's "explaining" much. I think this midichlorians feeling is bullshit. It's been established that there is some connection between electricity and the black lodge spirits, so it's not forcing the canon too much accepting that a nuke could set up some stuff in motion in the lodge.

I was indeed surprised by the Laura thing, although I had never understood why she was in the red room. It's not like all victims of BOB or other spirits were there. So, again, her having some kind of deeper connection with the spirit world is not a huge surprise.

Lynch's work always creates a kind of abyss between female characters and something that we'll call "their image." Look at the final shot in Mulholland Drive w/ ghostly girls in the sky. Look at the woman in Eraserhead and that surreal scene where she's on the movie screen w/ her character right there in front of it; there's an abyss present between them. This isn't about the bug. This episode was one of the best thrills I've experienced and I thought myself to be dead inside to experience something like this again. Also, this episode contains very confusing exposition that may be explained later.

I have the ultimate faith in this series. Bravo Lynch for his superior visual design and Frost for that damn sci-fi element. The fucking kafka and nuke shit in the earlier Gordon Cole scene dudes.
