Why does everyone hate this film so much? It was much better than the 2014 snorefest and it's not like a majority of the jap godzilla films weren't terrible.

Agreed. Half the Jap films are unwatchable and another 4/5 are slopes trying to morally browbeat us for being the undisputed victor in a military conflict when we should simply laugh at their pathetic nation and its subhuman culture

This is just a dumb film to entertain and it is well paced. Special effects were shit but so was everything else at the time.

I just remember getting sick one time in my childhood and having fever dreams of the cartoon and seeing it projected on my bedroom walls/ceiling one night. Really vague as I must've been about 5 or 6 but it cemented in my memory nonetheless. Don't remember the actual show at all though. It wasn't made by the same people that did the Men in Black cartoon was it? They both seem so similar in memory.
>>
>>84181050
Me too! I still have it
>>
>>84180889
The design breaks square cube law, big heavy animals become fat unless its just height. this is especially true in reptiles, its a physical law.

But who really cares about why thy design is good or bad. Everyone knows that the true conflict is that they called that creature godzilla. If they named it anything else it would probably be more appealing

I do have to draw a line on them putting a vagina on the CG model

Since when have movie monsters in popcorn films been known for following scientific accuracy? You can say that every godzilla design or large monster is physically impossible that way. The cloaca makes it more believable so now you are coming in here with personal preference as fact? get over yourself faggot
>>
>>84181538
>>84181622
Yeah it's by the same creators. They also made Extreme Ghostbusters and a bunch of other shows, but these three seem to be the ones people bring up the most.
Also, the people in charge of the Godzilla show were huge fans and they were apparently kept in the dark about some of the movie's details, and that's why the cartoon was more faithful to classic Godzilla.
>>
>>84180031
I actually really enjoy the film, the only thing that people were complaining about when it came out is most of the scene is at night (like all monster movies out there -except for the new Kong)

And we can't really see much shit. The only thing that makes it pain to watch for me is the baby godzilla scene... totally unnecessary.
>>
>>84181750
You didnt read the rest of my comment at all. I dont care about it breaking the laws of physics, it could have fucking laser fingers for all I care,

Yes, I know, the cloaca is very much not a human vagina slapped onto a reptile, however.

Look, I like Zilla, but pretending that theres anything well thought out about it is just lying to yourself, Zilla has mammal musculature, someone in the film thought he was at all comparable to an allosaurus.

Human pregnancy tests work on him?

None of this makes him WORSE, it just makes arguments that he's accurate silly. The most logical godzilla appearence yet is the 2014 design and even then that one has gills designed for animals that cannot leave water.

Let's make things clear. Godzilla (1998) is a bad film. But it definitely holds your attention better than Godzilla (2014). The latter is a dull exercise in filmmaking with nothing to say. It looks nice (whenever you can actually see it). But that's literally about it.

People that hate this movie don't realize it's not for them, this movie was for children, so they could sell toys and capitalize on the Jurassic Park hype. That's why I loved it when I was 4 years old, the people that hate on this film are no better than the manchildren that enjoy capeshit, it's a children's movie.
>>
>>84183070
Only problem? Godzilla (1998) was expected to become the biggest film of its time. Surpassing Star Wars, Titanic, and Jurassic Park. The marketing campaign was huge and other studios avoided placing anything important near the date of its release. Instead it barely made a profit. This was rejected by virtually everyone. Reviews were scathing. Countless toys went unsold and sat on shelves for months.

>>
>>84183617
I meant the creature. The actual movie has many problems. The marketing campaign is one of the best in our history. It was a huge mistake to release the film on Wednesday because the bad reviews got in before Friday so that crushed all the hopes for the record-breaking first weekend.
>>
>>84183617
It was still relatively successful overseas and it was one of the top grossing movies of the year, so that makes me wonder whether they'd go forward with a sequel if it was released now, pandering to the foreign market.

By like every metric Shin Godzilla is considered a success. Praised by critics. Most attended Japanese Godzilla film since the 60s. Merchandise sold like hotcakes. Showered in awards. And many fans regularly consider it one of the best the franchise has to offer. Look. Obviously the movie wasn't for you. That's fine. But don't pretend your opinion is fact.

As for your example, Sharknado is enjoyed ironically. If you did more than look at a number and actually read the reviews you would see that.

It was probably on the CGI model, since they tried to mask the entire creature to hide the lower quality CGI there probably isn't a good shot of it in the film.

>You mean that critical and financial failure
Yes, that one. I tried to make a point by naming one of the worst Godzilla movies.

Using critics as a metric is irrelevant. Avatar is the top selling movie of all time (if we don't adjust for inflation and even then it's in the second place). It's pretty much agreed by most people it's shit. You're confusing the fruit of a successful marketing campaign with actual quality.

Why are you so invested in selling me Shin? I don't like it, it being a success won't change that. There's more successful things out there that I dislike. You can yell till you're blue in the face about how it was a big blast with lots of awards, at the end I'll still say "Zilla looked better".

Exactly why are you wasting my time and yours for that matter?

I thought it was great, autistic godzilla fanboys seem to hate it though.

We're talking about a subjective topic. Thank the Modernists for distributing the power of opinion democratically and later on thank retards spouting "Appeal to Authoritah" as a means to discredit every critic in existence. Everything is qualia.
With all that in mind, I'm telling you this isn't a debate. It requires both parties agreeing to change their mind when confronted with """evidence""". As I'm neither willing to do so (nor would you be able to provide objective evidence in a subjective matter) and neither are you, this is a pointless, time wasting piss contest.

>Who are those people
Literally every single human being I have ever spoken to, yours truly included. Are you trying to sway this into a debate about Avatar?

Why not make it about films I truly care, then? So you get some investment from me.

Yes. I'm aware there's a great deal of subjectivity in the realm of critiquing. But how are supposed to gauge the quality of a film? The amount of money it generates? The number of critics or members of the general audience who give it a positive review? Winning a certain number of prestigious awards? Whether or not a film gets a pleasurable reaction out of you? Production value?

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider the best of the medium and why do you feel that way about them?

I don't do that anymore. In 2012 I had my music organised by genre, "best artists", "best albums", what have you. It was eclectic in terms of variety but very rigid in terms of "rating" and quality sorting. If you ask me today what I listen to I'll just show you my phone or my last.fm because I've gotten to the point where I don't even have a favourite band or singer.

Something similar happened with movies, I used to force myself to watch Arthouse shit because I thought that time was precious and it shouldn't be wasted with anything that isn't quality. You know this infographics that used to get posted on /tv/ with lists of films. You'd see names like Vilgot Sjöman, Claude Chabrol, Godard, Jean Cocteau, Rossellini and all these other assholes most people who watch movies as a means to relax (which is most people, really) don't really know about. I'd go out of my way to watch Cinéma d'auteur bullshit because I thought it'd add to my character. I was a teenager whilst doing this mind you.

Nowadays if you asked me about my favourite movies I'd probably say Conan, Time of the Gypsies, Trainspotting, Control, The 13th Warrior, Mad Max 2 and maybe The Last Battle. A week later that answer might change. This is all to say that I don't "rate" movies anymore in the same way I used to, I rate them based on the enjoyment I got out of them (be it "fun", intellectual stimulation, putting me in a good mood, whatever). I can "get" the message from the vast majority of critically acclaimed films (well known or "underrated" by the general public), but if I take no enjoyment out of the film I'll consider it garbage.

Tl;dr the quality of a film is a matter of personal intuition. Nothing more, nothing less. You enjoyed it, it's good. You didn't, it's not good and there's no need to force yourself to think otherwise because critics disagree. My two cents, I suppose.

Honest question: are you mentally retarded?
Do you think people make artsy movies to be pretentious and that's it?
Do you think people watch artsy movies to be pretentious and that's it?

For fuck sake your mental gymnastics to excuse your own pleb brain are amazing.
Being a pleb isn't "this guy doesn't watch kino", it's literally what you described, an individual that is born a pleb, remains and pleb and forces himself to watch kino to pretend he's not a pleb.

That's what I do but my asshat friend can't grasp the concept of that. I said I loved the new Power Rangers movie because it made me feel good. And he just kept bringing up critics and box office numbers. It's also why I don't judge people anymore for their tastes. If it makes them happy, who cares

Sounds like a triggered yet another autistic "YOU JUST DON'T GET IT, DO YOU?" dummy.

Call me a pleb all you want, understanding a film isn't going to make me enjoy it more. Plus, you're pretending the decision making of a teenager who is (like all teenagers) on an active process of individualisation and individuation is not common at all. You like to pretend you and only you were a genuine human being from the start to finish to mask your own insecurities instead of owning up to them, which rather pathetic considering how much you're sperging out over this.

>Pretentious
Never once did I use that word. Seems like you read the post and stopped half-way through. This is yet another one of your insecure projections stemming from a deep hatred for yourself.

Answer me this, have you ever been with a woman? To make things clearer so you don't play a game of intellectual dishonesty with yourself: have you ever been with a woman sexually?

>>84190087
>It's also why I don't judge people anymore for their tastes
It's that alright. I unironically enjoy Mean Girls and there's nothing anyone can do about it. It takes a special kind of autist to go out of his way to segment things into categories of "pleb" and "patrician" when it comes to these matters. I'd understand if we were talking about something that can quantified and measured, but this?

It's a means of enjoyment and stimuli, nothing else.

Godzilla fans despised it, mainstream audiences rejected it (little if any repeat business), studio executives wanted to postpone its release to make some major adjustments (Emmerich only completed it right before deadline and there was no time for an overhaul), and critics ripped it apart. This movie had one of the largest promotion campaigns in the history of film and it at best broke even. The merchandise went unsold after it released and obviously stores were upset. What more do you need to accept it was a failure?

One of my clearest memories of this movie from when I was a kid is of the ubiquity of the toys. They were everywhere, dominating toy shelves, gas station knickknack racks, Burger King kid's meals, etc. And it stayed that way for an entire summer. Never seen anything like that since, but then I haven't paid any attention to toys or movies marketed to kids so maybe that kind of massive merchandising campaign is normal.

Nah, the general consensus with Godzilla fans is that it's fine as it's own thing, but a shit representation of what Godzilla is.
They mostly think the movie is alright and that Zilla was cool as it's own monster but not as THE Godzilla.
