>But what about John Simm, you all ask? Well, despite some rumours online, The Master is very much back - not a dream, not a 'Moment-esque' type appearance - he is back, and at his evilest. There were flashes of redemption when he faced The 10th Doctor, and near the conclusion of The End Of Time, it seemed he had made a noble choice. We are still unsure of whereabouts in Simm's Master's timeline this episode sits, but it seems to be set after the events of The End Of Time (we may be wrong, though).

It's literally impossible to be anywhere else, his status between S3 and TEOT was a pile of ash

>Here though we’re seeing the original 60’s Mondasian Cybermen for the first time in New Who, faithfully recreated in every respect. Yes, even the voices are maintained! Fortunately, despite a few worries pre-viewing, they’ve translated successfully to the modern era in the episode itself. The top-knotted converts are utilized in a very effective and creepy way. There’s more of an exploration of the grim nature of Cyber-conversion.

Get hype!!!!!
>>
>For any viewer expecting his return though, the final reveal is lessened and becomes a rather obvious plot point. Not revealing everything beforehand would have kept the illusion and allowed a greater surprise as few would have guessed Simm. It’s just a disappointing case of publicity taking precedence. Regardless, thankfully the latter moments of the episode still come the closest yet to rivalling “Utopia” for sheer fan excitement. Simm hasn’t missed a beat, but is thankfully more toned down than his manic hooded-hobo ways in “The End of Time”.

Alright, crucify me for this, /Who/.
I just watched Heaven Sent/Hell Bent (a bit late, I know.)

I enjoyed Hell Bent more than Heaven Sent.

The two work together as a beautiful examination of how far The Doctor will go to save his friends, how much he cared about Clara, and how dangerous their relationship really is. He went too far. Far too far. The Doctor may hate endings, but everything must end.
A haunting piece of character drama with excellent dialogue. Moffat at his soppy best.

The Me and Clara restauraunt thing was a bit much, I'll admit, maybe. Perhaps a darker ending would have been better.
Being annoyed at Gallifrey being sidelined is understandable, but honestly, I don't care that much.

Maybe when I'm not as invested in the character(s) of The Doctor and Clara and in hindsight I will grow to rate Heaven Sent (which was 10/10 but didn't make me as emotional) above Hell Bent.
>>
>>84156402
Not really if you ask me.

A great way to do a Utopia-tier twist just before the finale would have a different writer, someone like Mark Gatiss or Toby Whithouse to write that penultimate episode. Nobody would see a big twist/ exciting ending coming.

I love how I was expecting "remember", but of course he can't. Stunning.

Hell Bent had a couple moments where you knew what the next line would be, and so were rewarded when you finally heard it, the same way some of the most beautiful songs work. But then there are other times where it subverts your expectations, as some of the other most beautiful songs do.

This. This ending would be perfect for the greatest companion ever, but I didn't really like Clara at all. She just felt like a too shit of a character, never given an opportunity to be 'real'.
>>
So is this doctor gonna literally fall to his death or what
>>
>>84157456
The Doctor Falls and hits his head on the TARDIS console
>>
>>84157197
I loved Clara. I admit she didn't have any character in S7 (because Moffat didn't have time to give her any) and she was just written as 'the companion', and some of her lines were irritating, but on the whole she felt like a good character and I cared for her in the end.

However, Face The Raven (and Clara's overall arc) sort of work better if she doesn't get saved. Her acceptance of her death after all she's been through is incredibly powerful, so her running away kind of dilutes it.

I understand that, like Moffat's resolution to the Time War, it's a bit of a moot point. The events still happen - she will still die - and to The Doctor, she is still dead/the Time War still resulted in the destruction of Gallifrey.

>>84157449
I absolutely 100% get that if you don't like Clara, you won't like Hell Bent. That's understandable. But even then, if you like/are invested in the character of the Doctor, you must see some merit in the exploration of his darker side and his loyalty to his friends, regardless of who they are.

Think of it less about Clara and more about Susan, Sara Kingdom, Tegan, Rose, Donna. All his friends, up until now. He cannot bear the fact that he has to say goodbye to them all, and that they all die. He wants to save them. He wants it to end. He can't bear to lose another. He can't bear to lose the person he poured his heart and soul into - particularly after how badly losing Amy and Rory felt to him, imagine how he must feel to lose another.

>>84158264
RTD finales were fanwanky but very exciting
Bad Wolf / Parting of the Ways is just a great story on it's own, 10/10 stuff
Moffat finales are funwanky too, but they are less exciting because people stopped caring because wedding was too bad

>Torchwood S2:
Woman gets mind controlled while pushing her baby, she lessens her grip on the cart and lets it go into busy traffic and is implied to be killed with comical sound effects
Main characters usually joke about deaths they see

>Torchwood: CoE
Jack has to kill his grandson to save the children, all the characters are distraught, sad music is playing and is really tense
Characters care about people dying all of a sudden

I meant The Wedding of River Song, not Let's Kill Hitler, obviously.

Actually you could argue 9 series 11 finales if you count Angels Take Manhattan (polarising, definitely has shit elements) and A Good Man Goes To War (I really liked it but polarising maybe)

Anyway, I loved Name of the Doctor, but I mostly loved it for the "holy shit what the fuck" revelation of the War Doctor, which I gather people didn't like, and if memory serves me well the finale itself was a bit of a nonevent, so it'll go under either polarising or shit

I especially loved the line "not in the name of the doctor", i mean holy shit, LITERALLY bravo moffat. Dropping the title and switching the bait at the same time, fuck that was GOAT

parting of the ways
You say that when the doctor regenerates in this episode the energy we see is the energy he absorbed escaping back into the tardis.
So this regeneration is actually consistant with the classic regenerations (unless you count the war doctor, but no one does that) due to the fact that the energy we see (if you're right) isnt regeneration energy.
So that means that for the following regenerations the "regeneration energy" is actually just an invention created beacuse the showrunners thought it would look cool.
Either that or i've just gone completely insane.

>>84158963
The classic regenerations weren't really consistent with each other, the new regenerations are a consistent stylistic choice and I quite like them, although the powers of regeneration energy itself are a bit iffy and perhaps should not be abused in the way they are

Why must we suffer in a world without Gordon Tipple Big Finish audios, lads?

>we'll never get the story of how Ainley regenerated into Tipple
>we'll never get the story of how Tipple acquired the Morphant
>we'll never get more details on Tipple!Master's life

>we'll never have a multi Master story with all the surviving Masters: Beevers, Tipple, Roberts, Jacobi, Macqueen, Simm and Gomez

Wow, that really sucks. I was aware of the rights issue with Grace and Chang (it's too bad that Ashbrook and Tso have to voice other random, totally-not-their-movie-characters characters in BF, and that Grace didn't even get a shoutout in Night of the Doctor) but I didn't know there were any rights issues surrounding the Doctor and Master as depicted in the movie.

I had always assumed that the reason Eric Roberts had never appeared in Big Finish was either because he was too expensive for them or because his Master is remembered as kind of an embarrassment by fans.

It's rather mind boggling for me to think that if not for the rights issues, we very probably *would* have Eric Roberts audios, if not Tipple audios too.

it could be when he was Harold Saxon.

just as the Doctor forgets his adventures with his future selves, he could get transported to Mondas, live through whatever happens in the upcoming episodes and come back and he would be none the wiser until he lived through the events as Missy later, just like happened to the Doctor during all the multi-doctor stories.

think of 10 saving Gallifrey with 11 and Hurt and still thinking he rekt all the Time Lords for hundreds of years until 11 experienced it.

RTD made dumb fun finales with an emotional edge that works.

Moffat in S5 made that but it was smarter and fresher, so everything since then has been trying to top it and he just fucking can't.
Then in the Capaldi era he started to set up things perfectly and go full retard at the end. Again, the man just can't do finales.

>>84164424
S5 finale was the best finale in nuWho. Series 1 is up there but all of the dated references to 2005's pop culture that are essential to the story really weigh it down. The 2nd part is kino though.
S6a's finale (Good Man Goes To War) was good. The pacing was off but most of Moffat's finales have really weird pacing.
S6b's finale (Wedding of River Song) might have the worst pacing of any episode in the shows history. I thought that they somehow accidentally released a workprint or rough cut version of it, but nope. Just a shitty script. Worst finale in nuWho IMO.
S7a's finale is pretty much on par with the previous one. Weird pacing, shitty script, unsatisfying conclusion.
S7b's finale was the best episode of the entirety of Series 7, but that isn't saying much I guess. I personally like it a lot. 1 episode rather than a two-parter prevented Moffat from going full madman in the first part only to completely jump the gun in the second part. I thought it was pretty satisfying and can't think of much that I hate about it, aside from the shitty green screen when Clara's falling through the timestream and the waste of Richard E. Grant's talent. The ending twist is a top 5 nuWho cliffhanger IMO.
S8's finale... Dark Water was great. Danny Pink getting SPLINKed was poetry and the scene with the Doctor and Clara by the volcano had some of the best acting from both Capaldi and Coleman in the show. The Missy reveal was top notch, and it was nice seeing Chris Addison in the same episode as Peter Capaldi (even though they never fucking interacted so what's the point). Death In Heaven was right back to Wedding of River Song/Angels Take Manhattan-tier shit.
S9 was kino for the first part, decent for the second. Definitely following Moffat's pattern but not as severely as the previous ones.

I skipped RTD's finales because his were either good or meh. Not dynamic like Moffat's. I'm not really a fan of The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, but I also don't like S4 as a whole.
