Obviously they're going with a complete contrast to Capaldi. Even though Capaldi is a god tier actor, the ratings have declined and I know a lot of people stopped watching the show when he replaced Smith. Rosenthal is an unlikely choice, a risk - exactly like Smith was. He doesn't fit the mould. Chibnall said his era would be bold and brave - the casting of Tom Rosenthal certainly satisfies that. Exciting if true.

You're completely right but the saddest part about this is that it's really not Capaldi's part that this series has had the worst writing in possibly the entire history of the show.

I'm of the opinion that going back to a Tennant clone to pander to fangirls won't pay off in the long run. It's too "safe" and most fangirls have moved on already anyway. What Doctor Who really needs to become good again is something fresh and new.

I'm that anon and I agree. Capaldi is not to blame for the drop in ratings. The writing's been shit for a while now and Capaldi's been wasted on the show which is incredibly sad.
But yes, I know a lot of fangirls who have dropped the show entirely because "some old man" took over. Which is why I'm sure the BBC will cast a younger, attractive-ish Doctor to try and reel back the old fanbase.

I miss Smith's speeches. I still get goose-bumps watching his speech in The Eleventh Hour where he calls back the Atraxi and talks to them while deciding on his costume. And then the screening of all the previous Doctors and he just walks right through Tennant's hologram and announces "Hello. I'm the Doctor."
Instantly cemented him as a great Doctor.

Yeah that moment in The Eleventh Hour was what made me go from thinking Smith was poorly cast to thinking he was perfect. That whole episode is one of the best written episodes of the whole show, especially with how it manages to be a soft reboot in a way while also continuing right where Tennant's last episode left off and winning fans over who hated Smith because >not muh doctor

I don't know what the context is to that but the Doctor's line is pretty correct. Jesus was realistically (well as realistic as one can be) a short, dirty brown guy instead of the beautiful white man with luscious hair that he's always portrayed as. The "monster" was terrible and looked awful, but the story was very good and emotional. One of my favourite episodes.
If I had to note one small annoyance, it would be that they hired a Scottish actor to play Vincent for no fucking reason. As a Dutchman I was really hyped to see one of my country's most known people from history being in Doctor Who, but surely they could've gotten a Dutch actor. There's like three Dutch actors in GoT, playing huge roles. But they just decided to shrug it off and make Vincent van Gogh Scottish for no reason at all. No offense to the actor though, he looked a lot like Vincent and played the part tremendously.

Still, amazing episode, and it's hard not to cry when the Doctor takes him to see the museum with all of his famous works, and Bill Nighy's reaction.

I know it's unlikely but Reece Shearsmith would be incredible. He's a great actor and could pull off the roll very well I think. For those not in the know, he was the mastermind behind the shitty eye-snot episode from Gatiss, but he's done so much more.
