>>84094052
I know you are but what am i?
In The Dogway Melody an all-dog cast (with human voiceovers) recreates famous scenes from early musical films, particularly The Broadway Melody. The finale is a chorus line of dogs performing "Singing in the Rain" spoofing Cliff Edwards's original version of the song in The Hollywood Revue of 1929. Also spoofed is Al Jolson's performance of "Mammy" in The Jazz Singer. This was a part of MGM's popular series of Dogville shorts directed by Zion Myers and Jules White. Incidentally, while the more familiar later film is titled Singin' in the Rain, the program card shown on-screen in this short spells the first word in the song's title "Singing."

I have never found a performance that has the world-transforming expressive and aesthetic depth of the vision a director brings to a great film. What the director can do is rearrange the objects, light, and space of his world, a world of which actors are only a part. When viewing a great Preminger, or Hawks, or Ford, or Sirk, or Hitchcock, I am seeing space differently from the way I usually see it, and seeing space represented in a way that seems to say things, thematic and human things, about the universe, or about a particular way of conceiving of the universe. Ford places actors in a kind of architectural grid that configures them as elements in a social order, and their relationship to that social order becomes much of what is so profoundly moving in Ford at his best, as in the shot of the bishop or whoever stopping to make the sign of the cross in long shot at the door of the dying Skeffington in "The Last Hurrah." Hawks's more organic vision starts from the bodily rhythms and gestures of performers, and attends to their bodily movements, and raises the study of human rhythm and motion and interaction to the level of music. In a great film, the filmmaker's sense of space gives meaning to the performances, whether the "performances" are by Kim Novak or Jane Brakhage. What an actor can do, sometimes skillfully and brilliantly and movingly, is evoke a specific kind of personality. There is, for me, less system there, and less vision, and less of a "world" for the viewer to interact with. Because I believe there are no rules for what makes great art I would never rule out a priori that a performance might be as great as the direction of "The Tarnished Angels," but I have yet to see any performance I felt was even remotely comparable in complexity of expression and aesthetic power to the direction of a much more minor Sirk, such as "No Room for the Groom."

The Adventures of Robin Hood was a very solid and fun adventure film. No wonder technicolor took off.

This looks familiar. Faust?
>>84125697
What is compelling about the film? It's honestly 2 and half hours of characters running around explaining the plot to the audience. The interview with the killer and the basement scene were fairly tense, but everything else was just rapid fire information that doesn't lead to anything interesting.

Jaime Christley is male.

Even worse because there's no way a 40 year old "male" should write like 20 year old tumblr girl who has never made someone laugh in her life.

It's written in a different style because it's his personal blog; his published work isn't so informal. And I laughed at the bit about worms having machine guns or whatever. Are you a Logan fan, by any chance?

>thinks Scott Barley shit is better than any silent film
>hasn't even seen Birth of a Nation
Holy plebbit!
>>84129856
I haven't seen every silent film so I can't make that statement, but I like it more than a majority of silent films I've seen. I do like Man with a Movie Camera and Passion of Joan of Arc more though. You're right, I haven't seen Birth of a Nation.
>>84129982
You only liked those 2 because they were short and edited fast for your little brain to handle. You couldn't handle 10 hours of silent films let alone anything by Griffith. I await your reviews of his work and the inevitable 1 stars to spite me as if it would mean anything.
It must feel good knowing no matter how many downboats Griffith gets he will always have academic prestige
>>84130257
>academic prestige
Hmm
>>84130200
That's an interesting claim. Sorry, but I'm not petty enough to rate a film poorly just to spite an anonymous poster on 4chan.

Sounds like a good read, I would check it out if I didn't have a million other things to read first.

>this overacting
This will never cease to be the worst silent Faust adaptation
>I'm patrician, I watch slow cinema!
>How many silent films have you seen?
>Ummm...
Instead of kissing girls I rate movies and show my ratings to people in a 4chan general. It's a coping mechanism.
