L M AO @ this delusion
O11 is standard normie fare - it's digestible on purely visceral levels to even people with the lowest cine IQ possible. The Wrestler is a "weird movie" by any possible neurotypical standards. people go into it expecting le epic wrestling and are hit with offbeat characters and depressing plot
disclaimer: i agree that soderbergh can be pretty fucking awkward when he wants to; that doesn't change the fact he's the one who was able to create succesful blockbusters out of these two

Even in minimalism it's easy to tell the difference between good art and bad art. Hell, search google for Rothko pieces and if you have any aesthetic sense to you, you'll immediately be able to say "oh, I like this one" or "no, this is bad." That's the key to it - utilizing the pure aesthetic facts of art such as symmetry, color and space. Of course, in our post-post-modernist world no art exists in a vacuum and minimalism is purely superficial outside of the context in which it was made. The same applies to film; the best way to understand a film is to put it in context with the other works of the director and the director himself. Don't mock minimalism because you're taking it out of context.

I'm sure the hundreds of pages of academic writing on Dog Star Man are talking about " literally (almost) nothing"; also, all the film theory books around built around the work of Brakhage deal with " literally (almost) nothing"; and the thousands of lectures Brakhage himself taught on film are about "literally (almost) nothing". That surely seem more plausible than you being a clueless pseud demeaning something he couldn't even begin to appreciate.

you missed the point of the movie. He made a big deal about filming with intuition, he spent weeks in the forest doing nothing but shoot on instinct literally invoking the idea of an animalistic nature. If you want to give it a post-modern treatment and read something else into it you're free to do that and so is anybody who writes essays about it, but Brakhage's intention was to do what I said, and I take his word over some loser on an anime forum who's so hypocritical he accuses me to engage in art on a surface level yet can't answer me what exactly it is that I missed in Dog Star Man.
