Twin Peaks the town really needs it's own solid protagonist to pick up the slack there. We've got the tragic girl, and the out of his depth bad boy, but we need our James/Donna 2.0 to tie it all together

I find almost all lynch endings happy, or at least "happy". The two already mentioned, in Lost Highway the man comes to terms with what he's done right at the end, and Inland Empire has a sense of freedom and peace at the end. Even Eraserhead had a sense of release, and FWWM was overwhelmingly happy/bittersweet. I guess you're right about nothing "overt" but he almost always has an uplifting, emotional ending.

Twin Peaks demographics have clearly changed in the last 25 years, and it makes more sense than how the town was set up earlier. 50,000 people have ~10 people on their police force, are primarily a logging town but have massive resort hotel that wants to buy out the factory and put everyone in town out of work, and a semi-secret underground biker/drug culture.

Now they have an expanded modern police force, the Horne's development projects brought in new business and younger people to town, the Roadhouse became a hip touring stop for bands. The drugs should be everywhere now if there is still high unemployment from the mill closing.

I've got to say it, I'm just not feeling 'the return' at all.

It just doesn't feel like a return to Twin Peaks. I'm well aware of Lynch's style. But I'm also very well acquainted with Twin Peaks... and this just isn't Twin Peaks.

I started the first couple of episodes with a big, goofy grin on my face. I couldn't wait to see how everyone was doing and how their characters had developed. I enjoyed those first couple of episodes. They were kind of dark and tense. Once I got through those I thought "next episode it will be Twin Peaks again, I'm ready for it now". It's not.

We've barely even seen Twin Peaks. The majority of what we've seen has been totally removed from that wonderfully isolated place. When we have returned, we get painfully slow shots of characters we know, who all seem to have had all the life sucked out of them, engaging in boring communication with boring new characters. I've seen some people complain about the Coop/Dougie arc becoming boring. I agree, but the thing is, it's not just Coop who seems totally lifeless... it's all the returning cast!

I really want this show to succeed but at this point the whole charm of the show is totally missing. Twin Peaks was full of character. It had me hanging on every tiny movement, word and facial expression of every character at all times. It was a joy to watch... this is becoming a bore.

At this point I'm only watching in the hope that it turns around, but I'm less convinced that will happen with each episode.

So are the retards who watch this show not understanding the concept of doppelgangers, and even the medium of film being an opposite? Lynch did this with FWWM even the way it was filmed was reversal.

In last nights episodes we got the best display of juxtaposition since the movie. We had one of the most saddening scenes so far with the child being run over, paralleled with one of the most absurdly hilarious scenes we have seen, the midget murdering people with an ice pick while shitty hip hop plays over. The scenes in the sheriffs office even mimic the doppelgangers of Deer Meadow in FWWM. Chad and operator girl are complete opposites of lucy and andy.

I don't understand how someone watching can not understand this and think its all random. I want to start a dialogue and not just say LEL LYNCHED XD when someone is confused. Are there any questions besides Judy people would like to know about?

If any of you watch Arrested Development which is one of the best ever comedy shows, it had a similar run to TP.

It had 3 seasons but due to cancellation (low ratings) the writers had to quicken the story and end it. It went out great and was cherished/adored by fans for years.

Then the revival came, Season 4. It was crazier and fresh. Everything about it was GREAT...BUT

the characters were all separated, the cast were not together in one scene for the majority of the season and this was the main reason many people hated the season.

Now before you down vote me, i have to say im enjoying the season and will review it after its finished BUT im hoping it doesnt follow ADs route of where we only see glimpses of TP and the majority of the cast dont interact with each other for 99% course of the season until the very end.

Also, this isnt a criticism, just a worry

I should have specified more. Twin Peaks the tv show is filmed with far away shots, fewer facial close ups. Much of FWWM is shot up close, very in your face. The tone and characters are a doppelganger of the original tv series.

Has Lynch just lost it?

It's not terrible but it's almost kinda sad watching S3. Lynch just seems to miss every beat that twenty years ago he would've hit first time.

The scenes aren't funny, the stretched scenes don't become unsettling or uncanny (just boring), nothing's scary anymore, there's lots of cringe and not in the good sense.

Maybe it was too much to expect a 71 year old to hold this together. Sad all the same tho. And I guess you have to say the same about Mark Frost since he was responsible for a great deal (although Frost has never been a great writer anyway if you look at his other work)

Hey kid, this is how Lynch literally views the world. You can see it in TP/FWWM, Dune, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Dr, and Lost Highway quite directly. All these works are hypostatizations of Hegelian dialectics. The main character is in some way the focal point of thesis and antithesis and if they are successful will synthesize the two worlds and come out the other side (but they are not always successful).

The only thing which makes Lynch more challenging than the average director is his idiosyncratic symbolism and willingness to accept subjective illogic as real.

I think the Dougie plot exists because in order to bring the old Coop back. He has to essentially be reborn. Cooper who stayed in the lodge for 25 years isn't the same as he was.

There's no purgatory in my interpretation. Yes he dies, and yes it's because of the horrible things he did, but the whole movie is about him being trapped in his denial-fueled fantasy, tormented by "the truth" and in the end he finally realizes it escapes the torment into the afterlife. Not happy I supposed but the most positive ending in that situation.

As for Inland Empire, without getting into my whole interpretation, the girl finds the afterlife, and the spirit continues on her eternal journey at peace

I'm confused about where deer meadow is.
