Why make a film then. Griffith didn't use scripts and whenever something was adapted he practically reinvented it by adding entire chunks. The entire first half of Birth of a Nation isn't even in Thomas Dixon's novel.

>>83813675
There needs to be clarification since newsreel documentaries didn't become an established thing until the 30's. If he means using real footage yes. Griffith is so real though, people might as well consider everything he made as "found footage". Jonas Meka made note of that. Many peple on /tv/ have consistently said Birth of a Nation is the most realistic film about the Civil War.

Machill's talking about horrorshit. If he actually wanted to start a serious argument, he would've said Citizen Kane or Fury 1936.
>>
>>83814564
why does the genre of his examples matter? also, neither of those films use found footage either. quit talking out of your ass for one second, please.
>>
Clarification needs to be made. There were no digital camcorders or newsreels established, and if anything, "found footage" is a matter of perspective. I wouldn't say Cannibal Holocaust or Paranormal Activity was genuine unless you were an infant. Now if you mean watching a film within the film, yes. If you mean using imported footage of battles or filming non-actors and natives within the film yes
>>
>>83814736
>neither of those films use found footage either
Citizen Kane has the News on the March segment and Fury 1936 has the footage of the mob a bystander used for the subsequent trial in the later half of the film

clarification WAS made. at this point it's fairly obvious that you're wrong and just don't want to admit it. also, Cannibal Holocaust was genuine enough that the director nearly went to jail because people thought he murdered the actors in the film.
>>
>>83814930
Birth of a Nation was genuine enough President Woodrow Wilson said it was "like writing history with lightning."
>>
>>83815011
that's a false quote that was attributed to him by Griffith to try and promote the film and has been debunked repeatedly.

Dixon conceived a bold scheme -- to arrange a private showing of the film at the White House and thereby to obtain the President’s implied endorsement. [41]

Wilson fell into Dixon’s trap, as indeed, did also members of the Supreme Court and both houses of Congress. Then, when the N.A.A.C.P. sought to prevent the showing of “The Birth of a Nation” in New York, Boston, and other cities, Dixon’s lawyers countered successfully by declaring that Chief Justice had seen the movie and liked it immensely. [42]

The Chief Justice, a Confederate veteran from Louisiana, put an end to the use of his name by threatening to denounce “The Birth of a Nation” publicly if Dixon did not stop saying that he had endorsed it. [43] Perceiving the political dangers in the situation, Tumulty suggested that Wilson write “some sort of a letter showing that he did not approve of the ‘Birth of a Nation.’” [44] “I would like to do this,” the President replied, “if there were some way in which I could do it without seeming to be trying to meet the agitation . . . stirred up by that unspeakable fellow Tucker [Trotter].” [45] He did, however, let Tumulty say that he had at no time approved the film; and three years later, when the nation was at war, he strongly disapproved the showing of this “unfortunate production.” [46]

you're the one ignoring history, dude. the only contemporaneous sources that cite Wilson's "like history written with lightning" quote are Dixon and Griffith, who provided no evidence for it and had a vested economic interest in the endorsement, and the existence of numerous sources that disavow the existence of the quote.

metaphoircal cinematography and emotive cinematography are different things

metaphorical: citizen kane - mirror shot
emotive: colonel blimp - wiping condensation off a carriage window

what i'm calling emotive cinematogrpahy needs a new name. it is about physically understanding deep inflections and associations with certain actions, surroundings, common human processes. it is about illuminating exactly what is happening in a scene by way of relatable physical moments, it works like how nostalgia works. you can fully understand the moment for the character because you recognise what they are doing from moments in your own life.

there is a film that exists which consists almost entirely of this 'emotive' cinematography/direction. it is called miami vice.

this is almost certainly not going to become the future of cinema technique, but only because the technique is too indefinite to learn or teach; it is a product of feeling and observation, nothing more. the 'craft' of cinema crumbles before this paradigm.

Griffith invented both.

Griffith also invented something far superior. Visual rhyming: revisiting the same locations and exact shots to see (de)volution over the passage of time. For example in Birth of a Nation, the revisiting of the same few shots of the homes and seeing the ravaging caused over time as the same shots get progressively longer emphasizing the deterioration and destruction.

perhaps. still a good example of emoting through action as opposed to unnatural orchestrated visual manipulation.

you are trying to undermine the 'technique' by saying it was already in the script but the entire reason it's good is because of its closer relationship with the literary; its ability to display things that certain types think cinema is incapable of expressing.

using the same locations is going to happen back them because silent era films, particularly hollywood, were pretty economical where possible, not to mention narratively straightforward. consider that as well as the fact that it is perfectly natural for a film to spend more time in its known locales late in the film (as opposed to when it is setting its stage early on) and all you have is a happy accident of economy and normal intuitive film structure. it's more of a scientific device than artistic

not that i care - you don't seem particularly interested in the art itself, you're obssessed with technique and i despise that type of scholar. good luck on your merry travels.

No he won't. Trump's in office now, so he'll most likely be higher. Regardless, you couldn't delete him from history no matter how hard you try. Every single popular filmmaker throughout history that you most likely like (because you have shit taste based on your genetic makeup) from Kurosawa to Rosselini to Jonas Mekas to Louis Delluc to Jean Renoir to Sergei Eisenstein to Bergman to John Ford to Orson Welles to Werner Herzog has consider him the all-time benchmark
