Hated Sleep No More, but this was GOAT. Loved it. Best of the series, and best story in years. Capaldi on top form, and it was a proper story with good villains/characters. Bravo Gatiss
>>
Mega when?

Wow our really standards really have fallen low

I agree, but this was the first ep in literally 3 years that felt like a proper Doctor Who story and not some 'clever' convoluted bullshit
>>
it was normal Gattiss filler with propaganda anti-war-on-terror
>>
post yfw you realise that Alpha picking up the Ice Warriors and introducing them to the universe is a set-up for the Peladon stories and how the Ice Warriors are representatives

This is true, Miss/master team up in ep12 and lock the 13th doctor in the vault, it's why missy asks him if he's ok, because shes already seen what happens

Don't know about that, I was never big on them but they grew on me over the course of the episode. Good counterpart to the Sontarans
>>
>>83778658
Could be a clue as to why Capaldi said they filmed his death already, maybe Master/Missy cause him to regenerate, he starts to do that, then right before he finishes they shove him in the vault and that's how 13 ends?
>>
>>83778545
not really, it was just that everyone's motives made sense and the villains were actual characters, not evil just because like we've been getting so far. and i found the whole victorians on mars thing fun.

we have big finish as stale to rehash to death old concepts
the series needs to push its boundaries

a filler in DW is a episode that people keep pointing guns at each other

heard he regenerates into 13 at the end of ep12, and the xmas episode is some weird timey wimey mind/dream thing where 13 still thinks hes 12 and he meets up with the first doctor before completing the 'mental element' of the regeneration

OK, so far we had

>The Pilot
It wasn't all that bad, but lack of any emotional impact made it pointless. Also, it was missing a middle act.
>Smile
Wow, paperclip optimizer, so creating. You keep writing amazing episodes, Frank. Not. What a waste of (probably) all the budget
>Thin Ice
Not bad plot, but either don't focus on racism or have it all the way through. One punching bag guy is just dumb pandering.
>Knock Knock
Not that bad, but extremely tedious. Bad guy was semi-interesting for once.

What's /who/'s top 5 Ice Warrior stories?
>>
>>83779042
Fuck. Just when I thought that there were no loose ends.

Missy induced it to with some sort of machine that she cobbled together? The TARDIS had no reason to take off on her own. There were no paradoxes or imminent threats nearby, and even if there was a threat, she's stuck around for worse stuff. Maybe we'll learn in a future episode.
>>
Which is the better Ice Warrior voice?

Classic "I'm freezing my tits off and hissing" or New "I'm grunting and clicking loudly while not speaking"?
>>
>>83779740
It's weird, because Briggs is capable of doing both voices.
>>
>>83779563
Why? The two used-up ones will be off the board in about 5min

Agreed. This was a proper episode where the doctor wasn't some "legend woven throughout time" bullshit.
Nobody knew who he was and he got treated like shit. He had to work his way out from the bottom which is what we like about the doctor to begin with. It's not about making 23984 grandiose speeches about all the THINGS I'VE DONE, it's about actually doing those things. Bravo Gatiss.

Interesting. I guess you're right about watching the older doctors. Never seen an entire episode but from what I've seen they do tend to be more serious and a bit out of place.
Personally I enjoyed 10 because of his happy and energetic personality, that I felt like is close to mine.
I would agree with the fact that he didn't seem like that kind of wise old alien that likes to travel. He felt like he just wanted to have fun.
>>
>>83781908
You're talking but all I hear is mememe

>>83781973

>>
>>83781944
10 was also forever spouting pop culture references and wore very 'normal clothes' (plus a long swishy coat). So all round he feels very 'human'. Weirdly, if you can sit through it, Fear Her makes a good effort to make him appear more alien but for the most part he just seems like an energetic crazy human with a time machine and gadgets.
>>
>>83781192
He hangs around near Doctor Who filming sites (he lives near Cardiff), and seems especially keen to meet the the lead actors to obtain autographs.

I think he probably sells the autographs to make a bit of non taxable income. Nevertheless, his behavior has been a bit stalker-ish, sometimes worryingly so.

Out of all it, I probably only really enjoyed The Red Lady. For the life of me, I can't even remember most. There was that one where they escaped non-existent future in time capsule, I think this was good too.

I'd say this is true, but that's why I liked Nine and Ten, because they didn't feel like the Doctor and it felt appropriate to have a new series that didn't bend over backwards to fit the old show. All that went out the window with Moffat, of course. It was just nice to have something set in the Doctor Who universe that wasn't Doctor Who, which is mostly shit. The first two Doctors constitute a completely different show from 3-7, the movie is the movie, and nu who should have been nu who.

Odd, though, given that RTD's era seemed to focus more on the companion each series... and it's Moff's era that's really gone to town on both companion and exploring the intricacies of the Doctor.

This would be pretty cool, if like, the entire scene didn't literally turn to embarrassing garbage right before our eyes the INSTANT the regeneration effect wore off and Twelve clapped, and if there was ANY kind of dramatic tension or hint or clue that he was actually wounded or regenerating or dramatic payoff of any kind to work with as a surprise explanation later. It was never mentioned again in the episode or in the following one, and it doesn't appear to be of any damn importance anymore.

If it was any kind of plot point past that moment, it WOULD be a pretty great story and examination or like, you know, matter at all and be nice. But the way it was played, it'd be fucking bullshit if they pulled this. Could've very much been GOAT. Not in our timeline.

the question is what is the benefit of such a premise? The Doctor is constantly wrestling with not crossing his own timestream or whatever the fuck, and the Doctor on his own is clearly so capable yet flawed, that there's really nothing he can't do by himself or anything that two of him wouldn't both overlook. The only advantage is "being in the same place at the same time", which is bogus for the premise, seeing as them being in two places at the same time means they have less scenes in the same place.

It would only maybe work as a twist where the story doesn't quiet make sense, but it's then revealed the Doctor goes back in time or something to help out in the situation? Which then leads to all sorts of incredibly boring paradoxes and excuses.

It would be neat, in theory, but in practice would be very self indulgent and pointless and hard to do well. Maybe a story where the Doctor loses his memory in the future and an earlier version helps him out during his amnesia?
>>
>>83784503
I just realized that last idea is literally The Next Doctor but with the same Doctor instead of a potential new incarnation. And that wasn't particularly good.

>>83784503
Just a fun idea that will never happen, but it's the kind of thing a script editor/showrunner would comission. Like with how The Almost People was "do avatar", or "do the Daleks but in London". The actual writer can figure out the logistics.

It could be The Doctor from the beginning of his tenure, and The Doctor from the end, with the first not knowing some bigimportant thing, perhaps the death of one of his companions or something emotional, and Doctor 2 has to conceal it from Doctor 1, but he finds out.

Maybe when he does find out he tries to prevent it, but obviously with Doctor 2 around he cannot, so it becomes either a moral battle or a real battle with Doctor 2 trying to stop Doctor 1 from ending his existence. Perhaps Doctor 1 goes insane with the knowledge of what is going to happen.

Episode idea:
Untitled
Start a regeneration story with the next Doctor and his next companion(s) already on adventures, and act as if you're not going to address the elephant in the room. Maybe even stretch this out over a couple of episodes to confuse people, and then ultimately surprise them when we finally see the regeneration, perhaps caused by the future Doctor. Of course the old Doctor fights back against this.

Cosmic forces make it so that the drama isn't over wanting the Doctor to -live-, but wanting the Doctor to -die-, to ensure his future and possibly that of the universe.

Perhaps some time sensitive being (The Master?) prevented the regeneration of The Doctor, and the future Doctor has to go back in time to make sure that he dies. Consideration would need to be taken to make sure this isn't just a repeat of Logopolis.

Write it. You have six weeks.
>>
It's sad that Doctor Who is in such a state that we fawn over a mediocre episode just because it doesn't have a fucking trainwreck of a plot.

That being said, I enjoyed it
>>
>>83784914
>never once on /who/ has anyone been honest about only liking the episode because of a shitty classic Who cameo

>>
>>83785068

>>
Dr. Who has all those super cool alien designs. Star Wars should learn a thing or two about it instead of always making a humanoid with an animal head.
>>
>>83785018
Sounds pretty nifty, honestly. Let's forgo the universe ending, because "history always sorts itself out", but really push the chemistry and likability and day-saving potential of the new Doctor and companion(s), so we really care about them, want to maybe see more of them, and can believably be expected to root for them to stay. Maybe the idea is to sort of "trick" the audience into accepting and rooting for change in the show/cast, instead of fighting it like you said. Then the old Doctor still has a chance to feature in a great story and get his closure for the audience, and it'll be a new, unique adventure of a story to tell for regeneration and introduce a new era. And it'll be really interesting to see, almost kind of like Turn Left combined with that one bit of Name of the Doctor, history both unwriting and rewriting as the ripple effect goes in from both sides and has to be reversed before it's too late -- something you'd expect to be done to interesting effect more often in a show like Who. The key is to make sure it's relatively small scale, it's the small scale personal changes and losses that have to be the scary threat. Plus genuine consequences to the previous Doctor that he has to accept after his second chance at life, to sacrifice for the future.

I like it. Good idea, mate. More input, /who/?
>>
I dunno. It was second episode of the series where I actually felt excitement, like proper Doctor Who feeling. With looking forward the resolution, not thinking about it as something inevitably shitty.

I absolutely agree, for example the Davison serial Terminus has a pointless "oh no the universe is going to end if this ship explodes", which is completely over the top and unnecessary - just having the ship blow up would have been enough. So yes, we need to care about the new Doctor and companions. Maybe it could be the season finale, a two-parter, giving us ten episodes to get to know the new team.

This would be logistically quite hard to pull off what with leaks etc, and might be hard to get an actor to agree to. But then again, this isjust fantasy.

>>83785440
I always wonder if there was some other design planned that they couldn't do for whatever reason. Surely those comments couldn't have been in reference to the one we actually got.
>>
>>83785379
Ooh, originator here, I just thought, maybe this could work like sort of like The Talons of Weng-Chiang or The Invasion of Time, in the way that Robert Holmes would split up a six-parter into two connected four and two-parters.

It could be a three-parter, starting off with some big threat that our new team absolutely -must- deal with, being interrupted by the plot we're discussing right now. So, The Old Doctor not dying would be a disaster not only for our future team, but for the planet/universe as well, due to this great big looming threat. We might be getting a little complicated for television here, whereas a novel might be better suited for this story.

So, The New Doctor and his companions are battling some massive threat, when some time-sensitive being (perhaps the aforementioned threat itself) disrupts his previous regeneration. Therefore, The New Doctor must go back in time and kill/assure the death of his former self. Perhaps, after a typically large fight and clash of egos, The Old Doctor realises he must team up with The New Doctor both to bring about the end of the huge threat, and of himself. The Old Doctor accepting his fate could be a real tear-jerker, and he could regenerate during what would normally be the celebratory part of the episode after the threat has been neutralised.
Or, he could eliminate the threat -by- regenerating, which is something the new series has established to be possible, but I'm also aware that some fans (and possibly I) aren't particularly fond of the weaponisation of regeneration energy.

tfw he is the real reason capaldi has quit

>>
>>83785379
Could be good for an opening two-parter, perhaps. Part one working like Rose combined with any number of actually good episodes, making you fall in love with two brand new characters, maybe have them solve a big problem or two together and have the future look bright and exciting, and end the episode with the ripples in time taking over and becoming aware of the regeneration being fucked up via some shit (Master shows up, some quick flashbacks of the original regeneration, and then the old Doctor is there.) and ending on that cliffhanger. Tell me you wouldn't be hooked by that, whether you've seen the show before or not?

Then Part Two deal with that problem, requiring the characters to solve the problem of the unseen regeneration episode, and then ensure the Doctor dies at the end. Let's say they go to the beginning of that timeline, and to prevent timestreams crossing even more than the first intervention (assuming the Master or whoever popped in to change the resolution or some shit), they have to pull a Back to the Future Part 2 and resolve the problem in a new way avoiding the original plot, aided by the future Doctor's rapidly fading memory of it. So throughout, we get another exciting adventure worthy of a regeneration story, plus a glimpse at an alternate timeline of it, a proper suspenseful goal (the Doctor has to accept and recreate? his DEATH, for REAL this time, and since there's only been one episode, it may be a real threat of the New!Doc and New!Companion not existing! Maybe a third set will replace them after the timeline is changed! and what if it all fails? anything can happen apparently, PLUS the resolution to the background conflict), and then all that feely acceptance shit and passing the torch.

Then the show can proceed from there with the new cast, starting off on a really high note and hopefully continuing from there. Plus, legacy is important to Doctor Who. Plus, the companion now knows most companion shit.

Fuck, can you imagine the kind of shit you could do if the next Doctor/companion wasn't revealed to the press several months before the episodes actually airing?

If complete secrecy could be held, you could actually go with that "the third doctor and companion team might take over" angle.

It could be like the Red Dwarf episode Back To Reality, where we are shown an alternate version of the crew, although in that episode it is revealed to not be real. Here, it could be revealed to be a real possible alternative. Imagine actually being made to care a little for the third TARDIS team, and having to choose between which TARDIS team you liked the best - two or three? And with no leaks or press releases, you honestly wouldn't know.

Making it a finale you could even go as far as not announcing a new series and making some people think that this really could be the end of Doctor Who, with everything going colossaly tits up.

>>83785866
Honestly, Moffat is the only person I know who would be capable of writing such an episode - he is good at all the wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff - but I could imagine it getting very convoluted and people getting really angry at him for daring to do something bold and ambitous with the show.

That would just be a total mindfuck, how could the new Doctor be separate from the simulation but only exist because of it?
