A lot of Lynch is about the collision of two dissimilar worlds. Mulholland Drive is obviously like this, with the collision taking place at Club Silencio. But it was there in Dune when Paul linked the world of the Fremen to the world of the Empire or whatever the shit was called. It was there in Blue Velvet when Jeffery patrolled the superficial 50s sunshine world with the dark 80s underbelly, and all the doppelgangers came together (Frank/Jeffery, Dorothy/Dern's character, good cop/bad cop). Lost Highway with Pullman/Getty stories.

There's always these two worlds, in some ways utterly opposed, and the main character survives their Hegelian fusion at the climax. Twin Peaks is on this theme very strongly.

Wrong. The tar pool leads to the black lodge. The black lodge leads to the white lodge. But there is a "deeper" black lodge where you're trapped if you fail the test of courage within the waiting room (the dark flickering rooms we see sometimes). The white lodge is "a place of paradise, where the birds sing a song" or something, and we've seen it once, when Briggs is sitting in that chair and sees a "giant owl" (owls are white lodge spirits).

The floor is black and white because your soul is going to either lodge from that place, it doesn't represent both lodges being the same place, otherwise there wouldn't be two lodges to begin with.

Earle is like a Lovecraft character who stumbles upon ancient knowledge that mankind was not meant to know, is driven mad by his pursuit of that knowledge, and is inevitably destroyed by the eldritch horrors that he foolishly believed he could control. It's great and perfect and adds so much more to the show, even if he was too Wile E. Coyote at times.

More importantly, the Lodge is still completely mysterious and insane. Earle never tells us anything that we actually want to know.
