In my first viewing of the show, before FWWM and all the lorefags were around, I figured that the Palmers were specifically targeted by Bob. He possessed Leland, and when he started possessing Laura as well, she chose to die rather than submit.
That's why they're both in the black lodge. Also, I assumed that the black lodge is a subjective place- it manifests itself as Laura(and Leland, and Windom Earle's wife...) because those are the people that are important for Coop.

I never even imagined this interpretation and all the people I know IRL that watched this show also never had this interpretation. The mention of "doppelganger" in the finale suggests quite directly the idea of multiples. Additionally, if the "evil that men do" as a metaphor is hypostatized in the show as a spirit like BOB then it also makes sense that the conflicting internal states of men would be hypostatized as doppelgangers.
