Even if you don't ship Audrey with Cooper, there's no way in hell you can say that Annie was a good, well-written character and not a plot device that came out of nowhere at the last possible minute. Same with Billy Zane. If Annie had existed since the beginning, it would've been perfectly fine; I'd even argue the same with Billy Zane. Instead they were created so the writers could dig themselves out of the hole Boyle threw them in. What took an entire season and a handful of episodes for Audrey and Cooper to develop was crammed into about three or four for the new characters and it shows.

Reality is Lynch probably wanted a more serious Cooper because he thought his quirkiness would feel out of place in FWWM, which is why he cut scenes like the 2x4 scene. His quirkiness in the series could easily be as him simply loosening up because of the town. His more series mood in FWWM can be explained as him recuperating after the Windom Earle incident, plus the dream he had.

Also, it is possible that Cooper's personality changed after all the time spent in the Lodge. In the new series, he seems a lot more serious as well.
