What I want, you've got
And it might be hard to handle
But like the flame that burns the candle
The candle feeds the flame
What I've got's full stock of thoughts
and dreams that scatter
You pull them all together
And how, I can't explain
But You make my dreams come true
On a night when bad dreams become a screamer
When they're messin' with the dreamer
I can laugh it in the face
Twist and shout my way out
And wrape yourself around me
'Cause I ain't the way that you found me
I'll never be the same
'Cause You make my dreams come true
I'm down on the daydream
That sleepwalk should be over by now
I know that You make my dreams come true"

I'm considering signing up to Letterboxd but I'm hesitant. Is it mostly full of elitist, fart-sniffing movie snobs, or are there some regular bros with better than average taste?

I'm mostly interested in using it as a movie watching journal, and for getting recs. I'm primarily into horror, thriller/mystery and crime.
>>
>>83557990
Worth it for the film diary, watchlist, and list completionism. The main crowd is composed of mostly dumb Tumblr girls but you can surround yourself with whoever. Go here http://archive.4plebs.org/tv/search/text/Letterboxd.com%2F/ to find profiles.

I'm nailing down the taste of /lbg/ and I notice a trend. Also, notice a trend of why people tend to not like Chaplin here. Most of the movies /lbg/ likes deal with murder, aggression, insanity, cynicism, and the general worst of humanity. The question is "does /lbg/ only rate a film highly if it piles on these elements" and "how do those elements make a film better let alone more complex". Is Chaplin therefore garbage because his films don't apply to /lbg/'s thinking.

>>
>>83584985
Also
>narrowminded
>useless
How are silent films useless if they are distinctly visual experiences.
I can admit early talkies is probably a small point of interest, but I wouldn't even classify that as useless. That transition period is one of the most interesting, mystifying, mythic, and consequential in the history of the medium.
>>
>>83586041
Your reading comprehension went fubar. I said it is useless outside of your narrow field of focus, much like vulgar autism fucks are useless outside of their meme films.
>>
I especially say mythic because there are so many myths about it. Myths perpetuated by people that have never watched over 5 early talkies. They lie that the camera just stopped moving altogether and reverted back to early 1900s. But that's a complete and utter lie. Right smack dab on 1929, there were numerous films with seemingly effortless camera movement, crazy crane shots and long takes that rival any "modern" film's. ALso, plenty that implemented intelligent uses of shadows and off-kilter angles.
>>

34KB, 533x434px
They lied to you and said there was no on-location shooting in the early talkies as well. No shots of cars on real pavement. All hoopla!
>>
>>83586070
How is it useless though. That's like saying Henry James and Shakespeare is useless. You could make the argument, I assume, that literature hasn't really evolved much since 20's. Well, I say film hasn't evolved much if at all since the 30's.
>>
Also, there is no such thing as a "vulgar auteur" when Hitchcock and Howard Hawks were generally considered vulgar compared to Academy directors like William Wyler, King Vidor, John Ford, George Stevens, and Elia Kazan. They were only elevated because of their personal consistency, broad reach, and integral linkage to the evolution of form and the young (emphasis on the young critics) Cahiers critics' elimination of genre bias due to genre films featuring elements found in "arthouse" and them having a close connection to projected American consciousness. But Bazin didn't even care for Hitchcock or Howard Hawks all too much. It was the young ones that went onto become directors that combatted with Bazin's theories. To them, cinema was about cultural photographic preservation as well but not realism entirely. Instead, it was whatever mode fitted the work being presented and cinema acted as a realm between fantasy and reality (a projection of a person's or a country's collective dreams), so using all techniques like jump cuts was preferred by them as opposed to Bazins feelings on dejected camera that acts as observer, long takes, little editing, and frame duplicity . TSPDT tends to look at things through the lenses of the young critics while academics tend to look via Bazin's. That's why I found it funny that someone said William Wyler was underrated when what he really means is by TSPDT. Bazin praised Wyler's directed films immensely and associated them along with Roberto Rosselini's, Orson Welles', and Jean Renoir's as the peak of the modern sound cinema.

DW Griffith smirks in disgust.jpg
345KB, 789x994px
What people often don't realize is if you observe DW Griffith's entire filmography, he was a master of both modes of theory (Bazin's and young critics') He had acting divorced from stage, long takes, dejected observing camera, realist content, spontaneity as well as thrillers projecting country's history, hopes, dreams, projections of his own internal struggles, implemented jump cuts to show emotional state, unmotivated camera movement. To take it even further he made cinematic poems, neorealist films, film essays, pioneered character over plot, tragic comedies, and all elements of montage. Mind you, he did largely all of these things first, and it's tough to think of what he didn't do in his over 500 film oeuvre.
