Shadow was implied to be an injun. Although, he's never explicitly called a tree nigger so the producers took their liberty to make him a regular nigger. Combine that with the awkward black lives matter harlem renaissance anansi 15 minute rant on the first episode, the awkward gay sex scenes, the over-the-top unbirthing scenes, and all other manner of gross perversion on screen and you get a show with a pretty good plot and background ruined by ambitious writers that wanted to throw in as much graphic and edgy shit as possible to compete with glorified softcore pornographics shows like Game of Thrones or House of Cards.

It's a bit slow. And it's not just unpacking details for the story and setting up the foundation of the world. We didn't need the second sequence of Bilquis. We didn't need so many repetitions of Emily Browning's character heading out to the casino just to portray tedium. It's five episodes in, more than half the first season, and we basically uncovered what the show was about even though we knew like two episodes in.

It's well-acted and ambitious. Somethings the artistry is effective, other times it's a bit forced. Actually outlining the lips of the media god smacking the technical boy in the face was kind of dumb. Taking the fucking moon out of the sky? It's a bit weird that no one discusses this.

It's probably going to be a pretty good series if they can amp the pacing up a bit.
