it is pretty simple anon.

as a kid it was awesome watching someone piloting a giant robot with a fucking sports car for a head using a a vidya controller fighting aliens and shit.

then later when you grow into an adult you start to notice really subtle humor they used like demolishing the dmv or shitting on mtv by smashing "pop tv" studios, satellites and billboards and crowds would cheer. Rewatching it was fucking glorious mate.

also it helps that the main character is a fat neckbeard so you can self-identify more.
