Zagreus is pretty damn confusing, but also kind of neat. Paul's performance is on point, delivering a Doctor that's both charming and intimidating, especially when the anti-time/Zagreus entity comes into the picture.

I would recommend going through (most of) the Eighth Doctor line though. Lots of great stories, plus it'll give you more context on the relationship between Charley and the Doctor.

Not even meaning to sound like an SJW, but it feels a little weird that Big Finish hasn't found a non-white lady to play an audio companion. Erimem was played by a white actress. Roz was already introduced in the books. I know race doesn't fucking matter in audio format, but it seems strange.

Things Catholics and Fundies don't hate: massive cathedrals, abstinence for religious reasons… all things we invented.

So surely, if we invented it, they'd love it. Unless you're suggesting they're inconsistent?

Being a police officer who wandered into a police box that turned out to be a TARDIS and then helped Dr Who, Susan, and Louise free Earth from the Daleks in 2150, probably.

But really, he's Bernard Cribbins. Why wouldn't you just say yes without question if he wants to talk to you?
>>
>>82374514
"femme twink" seems like a confused description on multiple levels. for starters, "femme" is a lesbian-exclusive term
>>
>>82374514
>so I'm not sure how to answer.
you could start by posting an example of a non-femme twink

The way I see it, we won't get a twink compaion until we get a female doctor. And if we get a female doctor, they will want the companion to look weaker and more vulnerable than her. The only way they can realistically do that is by getting a femme twink who looks even more feminine and vulnerable than the actual female

>anon ACTUALLY believes this
>>
>>82374547
>"femme" is a lesbian-exclusive term
No it isn't.

A femme is a feminine gay man, usually feminine- or androgynous-looking as well as feminine-acting.

A twink is a young and pretty gay man, usually slender and hairless.

So there's obviously a lot of overlap between the two, but they're not the same thing, as proven by, for example, the multi-decade existence of a magazine called Muscle Twink.
>>
>>82374591
Where did I fumble in my logic?
Are you suggesting that they don't currently (and always) cast companions to be weaker and more vulnerable than the doctor? Rory and even mickey were both weak and vulnerable. The only immediate exception I can think of is jack, but they'd never cast him alongside a female doctor because he'd be too dominant

You just have this weird inability to separate characteristics from physical appearance. Of course the Doctor is always written as more resourceful, knowledgeable, and confident than their companions, but why on earth would that mean that a female Doctor would have to have a twink companion?

It's especially bizarre when you take classic series into consideration. The Doctor isn't always physically stronger than the companions.
>>
>>82374629
>Are you suggesting that they don't currently (and always) cast companions to be weaker and more vulnerable than the doctor?
Not that anon, but…
>Ian and 1
>Steven and 1
>Ben and 1
>Ben and 2
>Jamie and 2
>Harry and 4
>Arguably even Turlough and 5
Most of the male companions have been stronger and butcher than their Doctors. Adric is the only exception in classic Who.

And it's not like 11 was a macho man next to Rory, the one who decked Hitler and blew up Cyberships while he just ran around talking.

And over course River was stronger and more macho than 11.

Agreed. And Zoe and Ace, too.

The only reason I just listed the male companions is that anon was saying they wouldn't have a male companion who's weaker than the Doctor, and basically all male companions have been weaker than the Doctor except Adric and maybe Jack (vs. 9, if not vs. 10).

I do think anon is right that it's at least a little more likely they'd cast a twink companion with a female Doctor than with a male Doctor, but his reasoning makes no sense.

There's still the hurdle of accents and actually knowing about the country's culture.

I listened to an audio that was set entirely in France today but I constantly forgot this because everybody was just using English accents (I know this is a common DW thing, but it's still lazy and counterproductive to storytelling). But then on the other hand, when someone in BF does attempt to do a non-British accent it can jarringly bad.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

yfw Shearman's latest BF script, years in the making, is a fucking drashig story?

Ouch.

>>82374264
But we only just lost Pete.

Do you think they'll bring him back later in the season like Rory?
>>
>>82376330
If foreman director anon is here, he can email me about it
I'm the anon who did the recent voices of grace butterworth, bookish man and the black/white guardians
If he's not here, at some point I'll probably make a couple other short things for different tones - action, spooky, dramatic etc
>>
>>82376384
Aren't you hyped for all that Drashig lore?

The oldest question in Doctor Who - when do the Drashigs come back?

It's a pity that Gerald Flood's death means we'll never get a 9-CD boxset of Kamelion's adventures in the TARDIS corridiors.
>>
>>82376445
Don't bother, your life is futile.
>>
The worst part about the whole drashig thing is that when I saw the title "Planet of the Drashigs" my instinctive response was positive, I thought it sounded good.

It's like Doctor Who fans have been trained to think that references = quality. I remember Larry talking about something similar. About how even he used to feel like there was something inherently worthwhile in bringing back a monster
>>
>>82376500
I remember when he brought back the Sontarans and the Peking Homunculus in those BBV Faction audios, and made a special point to mention that Lolita used to be the Master's TARDIS.
>>
Drashigs on audio. Totally pointless.
>>
>>82376500
I think it's because it satisfies fans' repetition compulsion, which is why they can derive years of pleasure from a show which is 99% routine padding.
>>
>>82375990

>>
>>82376632
Maybe if they stopped airing that annoying "YOU ARE TALK-ING TO A BOY?" trailer and made a new trailer that would actually convince people to watch it.
>>
>>82376664
Doesn't negate the fact that it was a poorly written, terribly 'acted', shitshow that should never have been made in the first place.
>>
>>82376500
I think it feels validating for a lot of people, like "I recognise that! That validates me watching the earlier episode / listening to the earlier audio / whatever". Of course there's absolutely nothing inherently positive about bringing back a monster. I wouldn't even call it usually a cashgrab, just a lack of originality.

Sometimes bringing things back can be done very well when there's a new spin or angle done with them, or a they'd work well with a new character who hasn't interacted them, but like, Seasons of Fear gains nothing from having the Nimon as opposed to another similar monster, Hungry Earth didn't say anything earlier Silurian episodes hadn't earlier, but the existence of multiple good Dalek stories shows there are good stories that can be told with returning things. Fuck, even Boom Town did something interesting with the Slitheen returning, which is more than I can say for most cases of BF bringing monsters back.
>>
>>82376148
>>82376120
Wild actually does knock 16 times. He knocks 4 times 4 times, which is one full measure of both the Master's theme and the show's theme.
>>
Was Quill just Kira from Deep Space Nine but as a schoolteacher?
>>
>>82376568
There will be an article on the site about how they readied the Drashig roar tapes for use in 21st-century audio drama.

But this kind of thing is the only reason you'd want old actors to return to the role anyway. Its pointlessness is the pointlessness of Big Finish as a whole. What was Peter Davison going to add to his characterisation at this point? What was Colin Baker proving that he can be less obnoxious if he's written totally out-of-character and has had twenty extra years to think about his portrayal going to add to anything? Big Finish's business plan when they went to the bank must have been the sentence "Doctor Who fans are all autistic."

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they include dialogue mentioning that Six isn't wearing his TV costume? Even though this is audio and it does't matter? This was because the people listening would have looked at the ground and started to breathe heavily through their noses if they had had to picture that bad coat that the bad man made the Doctor wear. Damaged people. Squandered lives.
>>
>>82376702
>Seasons of Fear gains nothing from having the Nimon as opposed to another similar monster
The only purpose that seemed to serve was as a bit of a "ha, gotcha!". The audio tricked us by being serious and relatively well-written but having monsters from a notoriously bad serial that have always been viewed as a joke.

Of course, they cheated by having that weird scene with the daleks early on.
>>
>>82374043
Doctor who's gone to fucking shit.
>>
>>82376702
There are three good Dalek stories, two of which barely use the Daleks, and all of which had been made by 1989.
>>
>>82376810
Which is an error, because The Horns of Nimon is terrific. The fans who disliked it were the ones that were being pandered to by the introduction of Adric.
>>
>>82376815
I'm sure many would debate you on that point, but the fact that more than one good Dalek story exists shows that bringing back a monster isn't always a bad choice. But most of the time, it's a lazy choice, certainly.
>>
>>82376789
>Squandered lives.
How is your day, anon?
>>
>>82376813
This has continued since in a great series about a policeman and his booths was added teachers and some grandfart with his screamin granddaughter. Get used to it.
>>
>>82376853
Many would debate me, but they'll all be listening to Planet of the fucking Drashigs, so their opinion is null and void.
>>
>>82376789
>getting that pissy over people listening to bad earstories

>>
>>82376863
Brilliant, I'm having a good old kek at the fact that Big Finish is a thing.
>>
>>82376897
Out of interest, what are the three Dalek stories you find good?
>>
>>82376789
I've listened to a bit of big finish, and the biggest problem I have with it is their godawful habit of forcing exposition of things that would be plain to see into dialogue. Have radio plays always had this problem and I just never noticed it with the Shadow or X-1?
>>
>>82376789
I think he gets a blue coat at some point but most of the audios I've listened to so far make jokes about his multi-coloured coat, it was even a plotpoint in one audio. So he's definitely wearing it

Not to mention the cover art
>>
>>82376923
Pretty much, it's very noticeable when you look for it, but there's definitely neater ways to do it and clumsier ways to do it.
>>
>>82376897
Go back to Connecticut, Sandifer.
>>
>>82376923
>>82376944
They also go too far the other way sometimes and don't explain/properly imply a situation at all. I heard a cliffhanger today that was literally just a sudden explosion and a yell, had no idea what was supposed to have happened.
>>
>>82376922
The Daleks, Genesis and Remembrance. Revelation loses by being too obviously an expression of Saward's hatred of his job, clever though it is, and because that kind of writing needs Orcini and Bostock to be a cynically-portrayed gay couple, which can't happen within the genre the show occupies.
>>
>>82376965
My style doesn't remotely resemble Sandifer's. Sandifer would have made out that The Pilot was better than Genesis because it was made more recently, then write 10, 000 words of bollocks about an unrelated subject and his own bitterness.
>>
>>82376981
There's certainly issues with the format. It's not like television is a 'perfect' format either though, plenty of issues with the medium there too.
>>
>>82376965
Even if some of his complaints are valid, Sandifer comes off as really shallow and would probably heap Big Finish tons of praise if Briggs, Fitton, and Dorney were all trans women of color but produced the same exact stories.
>>
>>82377019
Oh, and he'd pretend to have been pesonally hurt by William Hartnell's alleged and probably mythical racism. For attention.
>>
>>82377035
Sandifer did a doctorate in Media Studies before noticing how little employment it would lead to. He also pouted when challenged on his portrayal of the Yorkshire Ripper murders as a media fad. He's dreadful. Persistance is not a virtue in and of itself. Writing a lot is not a virtue in and of itself.

And David Whittaker was not a fucking alchemist, because nobody is outside of comic books. He just liked the trope.
>>
>>82377035
Has he made any comments on the latest Torchwood audio, "The Dollhouse"? It was written by a transgender woman, I think that's the first time that's happened at Big Finish. I haven't heard it yet but it seems to have been well-received.

>>82377108
The alchemy thing is an enormous turn-off from his writing for me, I love reading good media criticism but I hate it when media critics obsess about framing their criticism in some sort of worldview that not only has no relation to the texts they're engaging with, but doesn't even have any relation to the world they or their readers are living in. It's so self-indulgent.
>>
>>82377060
You obviously don't read enough Sandifer. He only criticises the really obvious racism like Talons of Wang Chiang. Otherwise, if it's something Moffat wrote or something Tumblr is upset about, he's more likely to come up with some reason as to why everybody else is wrong and the line is actually really clever and progressive.

>>82377108
I'm doing a media studies topic next semester and I still can't imagine doing it as a doctorate. I thought he was an English major though?
>>
>>82377108
Sandifer likes to talk big about the evils of capitalism, but keeps insisting that people give him more Patreon money than he deserves for writing halfhearted, meandering blogs that he used to do for free.
>>
>The run starts with The Sinestran Kill by Andrew Smith, in which aliens have become involved in the London crime scene in 1978. Frank Skinner (Mummy on the Orient Express) plays DCI Scott Neilson while Glynis Barber (Blake’s 7) is Kathy Blake.

That's the Big Finish website contextualising Frank Skinner, a comedian who has been famous for over twenty years, with reference to the one episode of Doctor Who he was in. Nobody with any self-respect should give these people money, I hope you're all pirating.
>>
>>82377161

They're one of the best current BF ranges IMO. The writing is good, the approach feels fresh, it's more about telling good stories than fanwanking over continuity, all the returning cast sound very excited about being back...it's a delightful range really.

>>
>>82377163
I read the whole fucking thing up until Forest of the Dead/Silence in the Library, though I skimmed massively at some points.

No, his doctorate was in Media Studies. He basically makes out on several occasions that the evil of capitalist society is measurable by the fact that he can't get a job.
>>
>>82377206
I highly doubt it.

>>82377225
Sounds good. I'm still very much in the early era of BF. The most "current" audio I've ever heard was Hurt's first boxset (you don't need to tell me they're terrible, I already know your opinion), but I might take a break from the main range soon and explore some newer ranges.
>>
>>82377283
The entire Eruditorum is just millions of words about how Sandifer blames society for why his life sucks instead of the fact that he's a bit of a cunt.
>>
>>82377286
>you don't need to tell me they're terrible, I already know your opinion

Do I push my opinions on those sets too much? I'll back off, I didn't realise I did that.

Hope you're enjoying early BF, loads of great stories there.

River Song's audios are another great new range if you want to explore that. I am no great fan of her on TV or anything, but her two audio boxsets are just really bloody great stories.
>>
>>82377163
>media studies

You must be stupid.
>>
>>82377161
I think the issue - and Sandifer isn't a critic, he's a fan blogger - is that people start these projects to watch everything in a series, and then get bored. The way they usually deal with this boredom is by writing about whatever really interests them and putting paragraphs about the ostensible subject at the beginning and end. The only whole-canon blog I've seen that doesn't fall into this trap or else peter out is Pushing Ahead of the Dame, the David Bowie discography blog. Bowie allowing Chris O'Leary to write about lots of other subjects while writing about him is probably a great help there, but I also think O'Leary being more talented helps.

Is there anything good in the TARDIS Eruditorum? Can anyone suggest anything to read?
>>
>>82377379
>Sandifer isn't a critic, he's a fan blogger

That's fair, but he's producing some form of media criticism regardless of what he considers it to be.

>people start these projects to watch everything in a series, and then get bored. The way they usually deal with this boredom is by writing about whatever really interests them and putting paragraphs about the ostensible subject at the beginning and end

I think that's a remarkably astute observation. I hadn't really thought about it from that perspective, but I think you're right on the money.

The obvious solution seems to be to just abandon the blog/project when bored, and go back to it when feeling revitalised enough, but of course that's hugely infeasible if one is trying to build an audience, earn money through it, get it done in a reasonable timeframe, etc.

If you're from outside the UK, fine. If not, you're an example of the kind of person they're doing it for. We could say it's for international fans, but let's be honest, if Big Finish got Paul McCartney to cameo, they'd put "Paul McCartney (The Chase)" in the press release.

I agree that he should earn money for the original TARDIS Eruditorum entries: From sales of those books he self-publishes that collect said entries. >>
>>82377728
>>82377790
This logic is terrible. People who don't like capitalism still have to financially support themselves somehow. You can't wish yourself into a world where capitalism doesn't exist and more money isn't something useful. And the fact some people work for free does not morally oblige everyone to.

What kind of mental gymnastics do you even need to do to complain about a writer taking entirely voluntary contributions from fans of their work?
>>
>>82377945
>It sits there on your record, a permanent testimony that your brain is partly an anus.
Have you even been to uni before? Electives effectively have zero bearing on the rest of your studies.

And is nobody else seeing the absurdity in asking why somebody would ever even consider doing media studies on a board dedicated to television & film, and in particular in a general where we've all talked about the same show every single day for years?
>>

You're right. I think in situations like this I need to step back and remember that for most of the people I talk to on here, going to uni means taking on crippling debt, so it's a much more serious venture for them.

It'll still always be bizarre to me how worked up people on the internet will get about what topics you choose to study. If I had said I was a NEET, which is what I had been for years previous to enrolling, nobody would even bat an eyelid.
>>
>>82378147
And the latter wouldn't be bad at all if Sandifer wasn't so militant in regards to his Marxism. I went to his tumblr a few months ago, and he said he wished he could go to a retail store on Black Friday and shoot anybody who entered.

Yup. Especially as an anon (not a trip), you have no obligation to keep replying. If replies frustrate you, you can even "hide > apply all" the comments to make the whole conversation disappear. You have no obligation to engage. If you're not enjoying, or getting anything out of, the conversation, why bother? It's 4chan, not work, not uni.

Cultural aspects might also be part of it, people from the States have a very different view of tertiary education, and the financial aspects are a large part of that, as you say.

Hope you enjoy your elective in any case!
>>
>>82378270
Debt isn't the point, the point is being serious about your life so you don't end up like Philip Sandifer. There's no point in going to university if you're going to piss the experience away on nonsense.
>>
Anyone else notice that the joke 13th Doctor costume posted on Twitter by the costume designer was made out of the same material the urchin girl was wearing in Thin Ice?
>>
>>82378319
It's not as if he has the slightest clue of what Marxism entails anyway, he's just trying to rationalize his misanthropy.
>>
>>82378359
Outside the States there's no such thing as an elective. So somebody is full of shit.
>>
Do you think Sandifer will participate in the inevitable Cletus Cull?
>>
>>82378404
He once went on a rant on why all leftists are required to arm themselves for a violent revolution against society. I asked him if he ever did anything violent in his life, and he said he keyed somebody's car once.

Sure, I'll just go back to never leaving the house and having no friends :^) That'll surely lead to a more fulfilling life than studying the wrong thing at uni ever could!

Debt is the point though, because I could drop out of uni tomorrow, or I could finish my degree in a couple of years and never use it to get a job, and it wouldn't ruin my life or have been a waste of time. Other people, such as yourself, don't have that luxury so they get irrationally mad over this

No, it genuinely will ruin your life. Not because of debt, but because three years of the wrong subject is a black mark for employers. You shouldn't be using it to get out of the house, you should be able to get out of the house already. If you're not, half your time at university will be wasted on getting used to social life.

>>82378516
I'd be surprised if they had student funding that made getting the wrong degree "no biggie", which is the other part of what this defensive anon is claiming.

Do we mean Thirteen in the sense of The Lie of the Land's regeneration? No idea how Knock Knock would connect to that though. Or do you mean something, what did Russell say?

> Harriet Jones!

The Supreme Dalek herself?
>>
>>82378682
>No, it genuinely will ruin your life.
Not it won't.

>because three years of the wrong subject is a black mark for employers
I think the 6 years of being a NEET before I finally started studying are more of a problem, anon.

>I'd be surprised if they had student funding that made getting the wrong degree "no biggie", which is the other part of what this defensive anon is claiming.
In my country, there is no interest on student fees and you only have to start paying it once you're over a certain income threshold. Meaning if I don't get a job after uni, I don't pay anything. And if I do get a job that pays enough to bring me over the threshold, the payments are taken out in small quantities so that it barely affects my life.

And yeah, when I have someone whining about how I'm ruining my life because I've taken the first positive step towards finally getting my shit together, of course I'm gonna be a little "defensive".

What's your excuse?
>>

I doubt the specifics will matter to that other anon, some Americans (and people of other nations, obviously, but notably Americans because they dominate online and rarely travel) legitimately cannot comprehend cultures and institutions dissimilar to their own.

When they say the Veritas makes people commit suicide, is it like a compulsion, a curse, or is the truth in it so terrible that people willingly commit suicide? I bet it will be set up like the former but end up being the latter. Keen to see whatever the "truth" is.

It's embedding a sentence in a completely unrelated sentence for no reason. This is how people talk when they're just speaking off the cuff and aren't really organizing their ideas. Nobody writes like that, but he probably thought it sounded cool and intellectual because he's heard people in interviews and such use that kind of diction.

It's not hypocritical unless you're telling other people not to by Apple products. You could regard this as futile and believe that the damage to Apple from such a campaign, let alone from denying them your own purchase, would be completely insignificant, in which case there's no reason not to buy one.
