Will it be GOAT?

World Enough and Time is GOAT.
It's the Doctor and Missy trapped on a space station orbiting a black hole. It's the Doctor and Missy sitting talking about their childhood with numerous flashback scenes to when the two were children. The boy who played the first Doctor in Listen is back and a new boy actor is playing the Master, black hair bright blue eyes. Moffat. It is revealed the Doctors parents before they died were servants to the Master's father. This is how the Master and Doctor became friends. A great flasback scene shows them meeting for the first time. The Doctors parents are heard but no seen. The son of a neighboring Gallifreyan Astriocrat bullies both the Doctor and Master, the Bully basically poor shames the Doctor which infuriates the Master who kills the bully. The Doctor and Master hide the boys body. It is an adaption of ''Master''. The two boys promise to keep it a secret cementing their friendship. Flashfoward it is revealed the Doctors parents died in an unknown event. Not explained to keep the Mystery surrounding it. The Doctor gets sent to a boys home. ''The barn'' and is miserable. The Master begs his father to allow the Doctor to live with them and asks him to vouch for him to become a Time Lord. The Doctor is then inducted into the academy aged 11 which is older than usual. It's just one of the best episodes made for the show. And Gomez is brilliant in it, shes more sane in it and timid. Can't wait for everyone to see it. When I say it's better than Heaven sent I mean it.

Episode 12 is 75 minutes. Plenty of time for the Cybermen and SImm. 11 is just 12 and Missy and is 55 minutes.

>Are you a minority of any kind?

Okay, good. Then I'm guessing you know what it's like to be oppressed?

>Obviously it's important to have a thick skin but "tranny", "nigger", etc. have more weight behind them than your average insult.

Because "tranny" and "nigger" are both slurs. Transgender people have it fucking awful right now in terms of public acceptance - they're the next big social justice struggle. People are killed for being transgender, and not just in third-world countries either, it happens in the west too. And you know those killers are calling them "trannies" and all kinds of other slurs.

Transgender people have a daily struggle with their gender identity. With the shit they go through - not just from other people but themselves too - I can't blame them for getting offended when someone calls them a "tranny". Remember that gender dysphoria is a serious mental illness, just like depression - you wouldn't go around insulting a depressed guy would you?

How hype are you guys for the mid-series four parter?

>people on /who/ are saying it's Regency England and Jesus level dark
>swollen, partially-expanded walking corpses
>Kung-fu monk like creatures
>'This is a diminished, more despondent Doctor, who's finding it hard to focus - and is liable to make mistakes'
>'When the Doctor is desperate, he gets dangerous, and Bill is disconcerted to discover a more warlike side to the Time Lord'
>"But now we come to the Doctor, our hero, who faces a truly testing time as he struggles to save his friends. We can't reveal what happens, but it's life-changing, even for a Time Lord"
>Earth on the edge of destruction
>Moffat said "This is a proper mad one. But it was my last chance to see how far you can bend this show before it breaks."
>Moffat said in DWM that Peter (Doctor of episode) is "of course, remarkable in this episode" implying the performance is GOAT
>Portal, Bioshock, and Grand Theft Auto references in the episode

It's going to be fucking amazing and honestly fark off if you even think about not hyping.

Eleven's era was all about building to bigger and bigger arc stories, except only the first one actually worked. So, when Moffat spent all his time hyping us about "watch carefully for clues" rather than watching the episodes as episodes, and the clues turned out to be a huge fucking mess, everything felt like crap.

If you go back and watch S6 and S7a ignoring all the arc bullshit, most of the episodes are actually pretty good. But it didn't feel that way at the time, because of the arc bullshit.

Moffat seems to have learned his lesson. S7b was still a bit under that shadow, but S8-10 aren't.
>>
The whole "Pete" thing reminded me of something from the VNAs. I was pretty sure it was in Conundrum, but I skimmed the whole book and it isn't there.

The idea is that history almost always prevents butterfly effects, so minor events don't cause major changes. If Benny kicks a can in present-day Earth it's not going to cause the humans to lose the Dalek Wars, at most it'll cause them to start an hour earlier or an hour later. But she kicks a can in present-day Earth, and the Dalek Wars start an hour earlier, and 47 people die who wouldn't have otherwise died, because even minor changes are major to someone.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Or did I just imagine all of that?
>>
>>82352595
I did find the bit in Transit where something the Doctor had done during the UNIT era led to Kadiatu discovering time travel a few centuries later and almost destroying the universe, which they talk about in a couple other Ace novels. But that's not the one I was looking for.

>>82352775
The writers' bible for the 1996 revival makes it pretty clear that the Doctor left Gallifrey because he got the President's daughter pregnant. (Although it wasn't yet decided whether that President was Rassilon or Romana.)
>>
>>82352595
You want Head Games, not Conundrum, but close. You've mixed it up a bit in your memory, but the can starting a war an hour early centuries later is right.

There are actually plenty of mentions of the butterfly effect in Classic Who and NuWho as well as in the novels (remember just last series when the Doctor said if he wasn't careful he'd return to a universe ruled by cats?), and you probably blended one or two of them in with the Head Games bit.
>>
>>82353845
Absolute canon. It just must to be.
>>
>>82353845
I'd always assumed Rassilon died long before the Doctor was born (loomfags gtfo), they always chat about him as if he was an ancient founder of the Time Lords (alongside Omega) in the Classic Series
>>
>>82352233
When this anon becomes showrunner put all your money on this casting happening.
>>
>>82354247
If you go back and watch Three Doctors, it really seems like Omega's era was pretty recent. And Morbius and Deadly Assassin make the most sense if you assume that the reigns of Rassilon and Morbius were only a few centuries ago, well within the Doctor's lifetime.

It's only all the later stories that make that implausible, mostly starting with Cartmel.

(Also, the loomfags would agree with you. The Doctor was born millions of years after the Other threw himself into the looms.)

But anyway, it's pretty clear that every version of the Leekley Bible was going to retcon a lot of details from the classic series and VNAs, in all versions. It's only because Jacobs basically ignored that and convinced Segal to go along with him that the TV movie can fit into canon at all.

The first version of the Bible had a different reason for the Doctor leaving: his half-brother the Master was elected President after Barusa, and he had to search for their mutual father, a lost explorer named Ulysses who had gone looking for a mythical Great Blue Planet (Earth), to save Gallifrey.

He could put together an army of Cybermen from across history to conquer the universe and retake Gallifrey.

Spoiler filled snippets from Extremis

''One must stay so the other can leave''

''Whatever happened to the Druids of old Ireland?''

''The official story the vatican tells is that St. Patrick drove the Snakes, the Pagan leaders fro, the Island and into the depths of the cold Atlantic. However, that is not the real truth Doctor, St. Patrick was given a mission by Rome a mission to retrieve the Veritas from those Druids. The truth is that those Druids survived and they killed saint Patrick and his followers with the truth''

''Their leader was once a great King, a man named Nuada of a mythical people known as the Tuatha De Danann. He is the one who dawns the orange robe''

>>
>>82359601
>What happens if I send a copy into BBC? Would anyone bother reading?
Probably not. In America, definitely not, but I'm not sure exactly how American the BBC has become since the 1980s.

But honestly, while you may think you have a great script, at best you have a great idea written up by someone who has a lot of talent but not enough skill and not nearly enough experience to turn it into a filmable script.

>What should I do with that screenplay?
Join a writers' group that will workshop it with you. And write more scripts to workshop, for different shows. Once you're happy with multiple scripts, use them to get an agent. Use the agent to get you work. Once you've got some experience, if you still want to do this same idea, rewrite it from scratch and get your agent to submit it. If they're impressed, they probably won't use it, but might call you into to commission you to write something different.

Or, alternatively, just post it on a fan fiction site.
>>
>>82359601
I'm pretty sure they're not even allowed to read things, because then if something similar happened to turn up in a future episode you could claim they stole your idea.
>>
>>82360027
That's been the rule in the US since the 1950s or so. You get back a form letter legally certifying that they haven't read it and explaining why they can't.

But in the US, while it's very hard to win a justified plagiarism lawsuit, it's also very easy to file a frivolous plagiarism suit and waste a ton of expensive time for their lawyers and all of the creatives involved.

I don't think the UK legal system is nearly as bad, is it?

There are billionaires out there who could easily buy the rights to the show and make huge budgeted episodes.
>>
>>82365661
Yeah, even if you were barely a billionaire, you could hire Chibs, Moff, RTD, and Cartmel to each make 3 episodes plus one special, with a per-episode budget about 10x what the BBC gives them, and still not use up your interest and dividends earnings for the year.

And then you could call up Ted Turner, Bill Gates, etc. and tell them to suck it. Sure, Ted's UN donation may have saved a few thousand lives, and Bill's may have given a few hundred thousand people laptops, but you just gave a hundred million people the best series of Doctor Who ever, and surely that's more important.

There was an anon last night who put it perfectly, but I can't remember exactly what he said. Something like this:

Decent character, good actress, but that's not what makes her a great companion. The fact that she makes Capaldi more interesting, in a way that Clara couldn't, is what makes her a great companion.
>>
>>82367691

>>
>>82367866
I assumed you came to /who/ because you wanted to actually talk about the character. If you're just looking to trigger people, you can go remind /pol/ that she's black and gay, or go find a tumblr and remind people that she may be black and gay but why is she still cis, and I'm sure they'll oblige.
>>
>>82367901
Clara didn't really bring out anything new in 12 until HS/HB, two episodes at the end of two whole years. Bill has already done so in her first three episodes. Sure, her S10 character arc may not end up as cool as Clara's S9 one, but even if it doesn't, she's already a great companion.
>>
Besides being incredibly hot, I find Clara to be a pretty boring companion.
>>
Who is the best and most interesting companion in your opinion, /who/?
>>
>>82368186
The problem with a character arc of "the companion turns into the Doctor" is that it makes it hard to use her interestingly in the individual episode plots. Amy, Donna, and Martha were all able to contribute things the Doctor could never do; Clara is mostly just useful in the same way as the Doctor, and not as well as him.

I think there's a way they could have made it work, basically what the EDAs did with Fitz post-Escape Velocity, but concentrated into 12 weeks of episodes instead of scattered haphazardly over a few of the novels in an two-year span.
>>
>>82368546
Ian, Zoe, and Rory, except that they wouldn't be nearly as good without Barbara, Jamie, and Amy, respectively. If you want a companion who's interesting purely on their own merits, Ace, Benny, or Evelyn. Or maybe Sarah Jane or Fitz.
>>
>>82368546
Leela and Jamie. There's something very fun about having a companion that's clueless about technology that is greatly underutilized.
>>
>>82368846
You know, I always wondered why so many of the writers complained about how hard that was with Katarina and Victoria, and then with Victorian Clara before they ditched that idea. Clearly nobody had any trouble writing for Jamie or Leela.

And it's not just "the Doctor should only have to explain things that are unfamiliar to the viewers", because they had the same problem with Tegan (with Nyssa and Adric/Turlough talking over her head) as they did with Victoria, even though she knows as much as the viewer does.
>>
>>82368846
It is fun, but there's general problem with it since one of companion's roles is to receive exposition for viewer's benefits, and they have different frame of reference from viewers.
>>
>>82368926
>>82368943
It probably makes a difference that neither 2 nor post-SJ 4 spent much time on present-day Earth. When you're bouncing around alien worlds and far-future space stations, the viewer is not much more clueful than Jamie or Leela. Would the same thing work on NuWho?
>>
>>82368943
It didn't seem to be much of a problem for those characters. 4 was Leela's teacher and Jamie was just there to bro out with 2 and which ever hot babe he was dragging around at the time.
>>
>>82369000
The problem is that, for example, if Doctor has to explain some technobabble to Leela, he'd have to realistically use terms of hunting-gathering, instead of terms modern viewers would understand.

Although I don't think it actually came up very often, but I imagine it makes writers anxious.

>>82369141

>>
>>82369110
But the writers seemed to rise to the occasion with Leela without any problems, while with Victoria they went and complained to the script editor.

Also, companions like Steven, Zoe, Romana, and Nyssa worked despite the fact that the Doctor rarely needed to explain anything to them; none of the writers ever complained about having to find other ways to bring us into the story without an exposition dump on the companion.

They were both good. Erimem is an interesting addition to 5's crew and I thought it was cute that he was trying to take her to his brother's for dinner. Bang-Bang-A-Boom! was a bit of fun.

>Any particular reason you listened to those ones?
Because that's where I'm up to in the main range.
>>
>>82370722
>Because that's where I'm up to in the main range.

Cool, your first listen through then?

BF-only companions like Evelyn and Charley often tend to get better written than the TV ones at BF, suppose they feel more freedom with the characters.
>>
>>82370762
BF is at it's best when working with it's own creations, yeah. Especially the villains and monsters. BF knows how to work with what it's got and they use the audio to do shit the TV show can't.
>>
>>82370722
I loved the way they used Erimem in that story. We were just talking about the problem of companions who are from so far in the past they can't understand the present day, but in this one, she's from so far in the past that she can't even understand the 4th century, and they make a virtue out of that instead of a problem.

>>
>>82371204
There is no official canon for Doctor Who, full stop. The TV show occasionally references the audios, novels, and comics, but it never relies on them—but the same thing is true for anything that happened on TV longer ago than last series.

So if you only care about "canon", there's no reason to pay any attention to anything but S9 and S10 of NuWho.

But if you care about good Doctor Who stories, some of the best ones are from Big Finish.
>>
>>82371204
Just as canon as anything post-Verity Lambert. That is, not canon at all.
>>
>>82371204
That's complicated to say but it seems to be mostly canon. Sometimes not. There's what happens to 6 after trial and what 8 does which you don't get on tv so why not. People say there is no canon but wink wink we all kind of know what the real answer is, which is that it's not just a bunch of bullshit and you can fit the stories in with the show and it has all of the real actors.

>People say there is no canon but wink wink we all kind of know what the real answer is

Those people including Steven Moffat (DWM 496, see extracts here https://www.reddit.com/r/gallifrey/comments/445j6w/production_notes_steven_moffat_qa_for_doctor_who/), Paul Cornell (http://www.paulcornell.com/2007/02/canonicity-in-doctor-who/), Robert Holmes and his disregard for any concept of a "canon" with every new story he wrote, and so on?

Doctor Who not having a canon isn't a joke, it's the implicit stance of the BBC. Canon is derived from authority, it has no other basis, and the only time that authority has ever expressly called something canon was the Adventure Games for Series 5. That is the sole Doctor Who work you could consider canon if we're talking actual evidence.

Doctor Who effectively has no canon, and that's a fantastic thing. Paul Cornell expresses why, in his essay I linked above, better than I ever could.

>it's not just a bunch of bullshit and you can fit the stories in with the show and it has all of the real actors.

Saying Doctor Who doesn't have a canon isn't implying Big Finish is bullshit, or the TV show is bullshit, or the comics or whatever else, it's liberating anyone who wants to tell stories in the worlds of Doctor Who. "Canon" (in the sense of continuity, which isn't even what it really means but what fans normally mean when they say it) is, just like Moffat says, "in the hearts and minds of all the people watching", it's a personal negotiation between stories one likes having "connected". The BBC isn't going to force that onto you; you enjoy the stories you enjoy, and reconcile them how you like. It's a beautiful, liberating thing, freeing up storytelling instead of boxing it in.

I don't think we're disagreeing really since the thrust of your comment seemed to be just encouraging that anon to listen to Big Finish since it "fits in nicely" with the TV show. I'm just soapboxing about canon really.

For the Frobisher, Mel, and Peri ones, you can pretty much jump around. For the Evelyn, Charley, Lucie, and Mary Shelley ones, it makes a lot more sense to listen to them in order.

All I remember about hide besides the punchline is that insufferable low framerate they used whenever the monster was on screen
they did that in a few 7B episodes and I can't for the life of me figure out why the fuck they thought it was a good idea

Because the monster was stop-animation.

Working on that "combine the BBC narrated 'soundtracks' of the missing eps with the Loose Cannon recons" thing, it's not too difficult to do, and the end result definitely is better and more engaging than either the audio or LC recon alone, but it's time-consuming going through all the missing eps and doing it. Will upload them to MEGA when I get em all done.

Ya.

I just want to reiterate the cuteness of the Brax thing. The Doctor (for some reason) decided Erimem couldn't travel with them so he tried to pilot the TARDIS to the Braxiatel Collection and says that they're probably in time for dinner. He had someone he wasn't sure what to do with and so his first thought is to introduce them to his bro

It follows on a bit from the previous story Neverland, but almost nothing is carried over and it explains pretty much everything you need to know.

It would be favorable to listen to Storm Warning beforehand though because the story assumes you to be familiar with Charley and her situation.

Zagreus is pretty damn confusing, but also kind of neat. Paul's performance is on point, delivering a Doctor that's both charming and intimidating, especially when the anti-time/Zagreus entity comes into the picture.

I would recommend going through (most of) the Eighth Doctor line though. Lot's of great stories, plus it'll give you more context on the relationship between Charley and the Doctor.
>>
>>82374009
Yes. Mrs Wibbsey is a new companion in Hornet's Nest and the two followup series.

>>82374016
Charley is an 18-year-old Edwardian girl from a well-off family who runs away from home and disguises herself as a crewmember on an airship. The airship crashes, but the Doctor saves her. Over the next few stories, we learn that she was supposed to die in the crash, and the Doctor has changed history, which eventually fucks up the universe in ways that are explained in Neverland.

>In fact, there’s something gleefully old fashioned and patient about it, an episode that could easily be set in the past as much as in the present day. The sonic screwdriver is put away again, and it’s down to a bit of brainpower to work out just what’s going on. Without spoiling it, I really think this one delivered in the last third, too. One or two of the episodes this run have done the build up very well, and had to rush to wrap things up. Not here.
