So in the teaser for upcoming season - it showed 12 doing the regeneration process, obviously he wont be regenerating until the christmas special...so what do you think that's all about?

The episode was trash desu. I guess that's what happens when you try to please the lowest common denominator, the show stops being interesting so that normies can comprehend what's going on without having to know anything about the show.

There's some kind of plot about 12 prolonging or holding back his regeneration
Capaldi's said he's filmed his "death", but still hasn't started filming the christmas special
>>
>>81713785
Not tonight, leave it a day or two

>>81713770

>>
>>81713757
we've had quite a bit of discussion about this over the past few days. Capaldi I think said his regeneration is "complicated" or something. He's apparently filmed his death, but the Christmas special hasn't started filming
The leading theory is that he regenerates early on and holds it in, putting it off until Christmas. Either that or something timey wimey.
It looks like he's regenerating during one of the truth monks episodes, which is only halfway through the season. So I'm interested to see what ends up happening

The actual candidates are probably people nobody's mentioned yet, given that's the way it was with both Capaldi and Smith.

The bettors have Kris Marshall and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the top contenders, with Natalie Dormer, Olivia Coleman, David Harewood, and, on some sites, Andrew Buchan and/or Tilda Swinton also in the running.

The Mirror claims they have an inside source who confirms it's Kris Marshall, and also that he's starting filming now to be part of S10. Every other tabloid has either written an article using the Mirror as a source, or clumsily copied and pasted the Sun's article using the Mirror as a source.

My ex-girlfriend used to peg me. She roleplayed as Colin Baker and I was a pie. The flavour of the pie depended on the mood, of course. Most of the betting sites are suspended for the weekend after a shit-ton of small bets on Kris Marshall (after the Mirror article came out) and a smaller number of much larger bets on Waller-Bridge.

This could mean that somebody knows something, that somebody is deliberately manipulating the betting to get publicity, or, most likely, that the bookies have no idea but are worried that both of the above are possibilities and want to wait until Monday afternoon to see if there's any actual news.

So listened to Neverland couple nights ago. Pretty great story, more stuff about Zagreus, more good arc stuff, links back to Seasons of Fear, 9/10 story.

I thought all the main range was meant to be 4 parts so while listening I thought "this is dragging on a bit" and checked and it's instead 2 longer parts. Anyone know why they did this?

Also listened to The Maltese Penguin, pretty comfy story, small appearances from sixie, GOAT Frobisher, overall an enjoyable little bonus story.

What does /who/ think of Neverland and The Maltese Penguin. Next up is Spare Parts, but I already know what people think of that.

I'm pretty sure there's an interview with Alan Barnes where he explains, but I can't remember what the answer was. But in general, BF was starting to experiment with the format around that time, so they probably didn't need much reason to try out a story with only one cliffhanger instead of three to see how it worked out.

>What does /who/ think of Neverland and The Maltese Penguin.
Very good and even better.

The only problem with Neverland is that Zagreus doesn't live up to the buildup. But, like most BF listeners, you've probably seen enough NuWho series and/or Classic stories that you can handle that kind of disappointment.

Nope, 8 is the most straightforward Doctor you can find. Big Finish made his timeline easy to navigate, and I'm grateful for it.

Although, Shada, the trilogy with Mary Shelley, and the one with all of his alternate companions happen the earliest in his timeline.

No more 8 until Zagreus.

Which was really annoying at the time—17 months of waiting, with new hype about Zagreus every month, before it finally came out. (Which only made it more of a letdown.)

Don't forget about The Dying Days and the DWM comics also being tied into Big Finish continuity (and at that point, might as well cram in the RT comics too).

And Gary Russell changed the official line on how those different things fit together at least twice before even getting to Company, where Alan Barnes changed it again…

Why are the Sun's odds so much different from everyone else's?

Everywhere else, the list goes more like this:
>Kris Marshall
>Phoebe Waller-Bridge (close behind, both under than 1:1)

>Natalie Dormer
>Olivia Colman
>Andrew Buchan
>David Harewood (near 4-way tie)

>Michaela Coel
>Richard Rankin
>Tilda Swinton (near 3-way tie)

And all the rest of their "top candidates" are way down the last after a whole bunch of other people like Maxine Peake and Mathew Baynton, and with much longer odds than the Sun is giving them.

So… is there a way to buy options against SunBets or something, to make money off the huge differentials?

We've spent so much time asking "Valeyard when" and now we've actually got the twelfth doctor regenerating, it's apparently complicated, and no one is saying boo.

I get that technically Valeyard should've popped up when Tennant regenerated into Smith, but Moffat's been saying "I don't really get the Valeyard" so often that it seems like a red herring. I'm actually letting myself get a little bit excited about the possibility, desu.

That's not surprising.

I won't be surprised if Series 10 is at least somewhat inspired by the idea of a continuation of the atmosphere of the last few seasons of the original run. A lot of the promo photography doesn't look contemporary/modern so much as a throwback to some Saturday night 80s sci-fi show on the verge of cancellation (hey..). Putting aside the fact Bill seems to be Ace's spiritual successor, you look at Capaldi/Bill/Nardole beside each other and it looks like a b-series ripe to be torn apart on MST3K.

If there were an "evil doctor" who weren't a fake, he'd obviously be the Valeyard, so it would hardly be surprising or exciting. (The original surprise for the Valeyard wasn't "Ohmigod, this evil Doctor is actually the Valeyard", it was "Ohmigod, whatever the fuck a Valeyard is is actually the Doctor". And even that wasn't all that exciting, but turning it around would just make it stupid.)

But since there is no "evil doctor", I'm not sure what you're talking about in the first place.

>>
>>81719183
Pretty much. I mean he basically established that you can come up with a 2deep4u reading for anything, but it seems more justified with Doctor Who because of its length, cultural importance and the amount of obsessed fans it has. It would seem a lot more silly if you did it with just a random sitcom.
>>
>>81719119
Valeyard would be a sign that the ending of the series is approaching.

Moffat established three names the Doctor would go by before his death.

> "He will have other names before the end, Storm, The Beast, The Valeyard..."

- Storm (Oncoming Storm) - 10th Doctor
- The Beast - 12th Doctor
- The Valeyard - ?

So when the Valeyard arrives, they've basically covered the three names he has - the Valeyard is effectively spawned during the penultimate regeneration.

So Moffat has basically set-up that if we ever get Valeyard, the show will end soon after
>>
>>81719210
Yes, a story where the companion doesn't trust the Doctor means the Doctor has been replaced by an evil Doctor. In a dozen stories from the Time Warrior on, that's the way it's always turned out.

>>
>>81719297
I think you're going at it from the wrong angle to see it as like a misled 2deep4u thing, the idea with critical analysis is that the reading itself is the thing. It's not so much "this Doctor Who episode has these ultra deep meanings", it's "we can talk about these ultra deep things through a Doctor Who episode"
>>
For all of the Valeyard posting:

"Writer's guidelines for the Virgin New Adventures specifically asked writers not to discuss the continuity issues created by the Valeyard or the Doctor's trial in The Trial of a Time Lord, branding the Valeyard "a continuity nightmare, and a rather dull villain", and took the official line that those events had taken place in the Doctor's personal future."
>>
>>81719383
Yes, just like the Doctor really was fighting for the wrong side in The Time Warrior, and really was the most evil monster in the universe in The Pandorica Opens.
>>
>>81719437
And, like almost everything in the Darvill-Evans' guidelines, that was completely ignored. Most obviously by Millennial Rites, a novel entirely about the continuity issues created by the Valeyard and the Doctor's trial (and Mel's whole Melness).

> Spends the whole episode ordering some army men to do things rather than doing anything himself, because they cant have the Doctor kill people
> Is killed by Bill and regenerates revealing it's all an illusion
> Never get the Valeyard again

How would you feel if Valeyard was just another form of the Dreamlord as described?
>>
>>81720196
Well, since some stories aren't placed specifically somewhere on the Doctor's timeline, some fans have used the covers of Big Finish to do the placing. For example, Seeds of War is set near the very end of 6's life, as evidenced by his technicolor coat and Mel's appearance. However, he meets an earlier version of himself, with the blue coat, in The Wrong Doctors (although this happens earlier for T6, shortly after dropping off Evelyn, which is post-Trial).

The best way to place where a story happens for 6 or 7 is the cover, if not stated in the story. Another example of this is the cover of 45, which shows the movie's TARDIS console.
>>
>>81720265
More like Twelve, Bill and Nardole go into an alien tomb, and go back to meet the original inhabitants of Earth.
>>
>>81720365
>>81720196
The blue coat for 6 also shows a very clear difference in his audio personality, as opposed to his TV personality. Every story of 6 up until Real Time (Evelyn and the Cybermen, got "animated" by the BBC, then turned into an audio) has him wearing his trademark rainbow coat, but this story and nearly all that follow show him with the blue coat, up until The Wrong Doctors, where he changes it as a promise to Mel. Although the cover for Spaceport Fear shows the blue coat, he's wearing his regular one in the story.
>>
>>81720287
I don't want to say because that'd make it possible to find the video and I don't want to promote the channel through anything external to youtube. It's kind of dumb, but I want to see how far I'll get just by relying on the youtube algorithm to recommend my videos to people. So far the answer is nowhere, but like I said most of my videos have been low-effort shitposts. I'm planning to do more stuff like the Who review and hope it gets people's attention.

Haven't you read the episode descriptions?
The three parter is about some kind of mass delusion psyop shit. The doctor fighting for the wrong side doesn't mean it's an evil doctor, it just means he's gone under the influence of whatever the truth monks are doing

Kek.

Almost. but actually, it would feel weird, then you would move your _brain_ and your _arms_ would be fooled they are in a different place.

My fault for the confusion; should have rotated through the sixth dimension instead of the fifth.

Since you guys are talking about story placement, maybe one of you owns AHistory and can answer my question from earlier:

I bought a copy of the Amazon Kindle version, and all the footnote links in the "present day" section go to a completely different section, making it basically useless.

I've already sent an email to Mad Norwegian, but meanwhile…

Are then any pirate versions that have all the footnote links, and that aren't broken like this?

(Also, while I'm at it, are there any pirate versions that have the update and/or Unhistory merged in?)

More to the point, the Big Finish personnel were sober, safe pair of hands types. The fact that they were able to work up Big Finish and get the rights to make Doctor Who in the first place is a testament to their considerable professionalism - as is the fact that they’ve mildly improbably held the rights and continued their line with no end in sight as the new series kicked up. Equally telling is the number of people involved with Big Finish who have been gifted jobs on the new series. Barnaby Edwards and Nicholas Pegg, who both provide stirringly mediocre voice acting on Storm Warning can be unseen in any Dalek story. Alan Barnes and Gary Russell got the plum of doing The Infinite Quest, and Gary Russell was script editor for the new series (a far more menial and paper pushing position than on the classic series) on the last few Tennant specials, as well as on a few episodes of Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. And, of course, Nicholas Briggs voices all of the monsters.

So, we hit one of these points where I need to be clear that I don’t mean something as an insult: with the exception of Nicholas Briggs (who really does do some phenomenal voice work with his monsters), none of these people were hired on the new series for their talent. They’re mostly sinecures given to people for faithful service to Doctor Who over the years. And they’re deserved. It’s absolutely wonderful that Doctor Who hires Barnaby Edwards and Nicholas Pegg to be Dalek operators. But they got the jobs by being reliable and professional. Which sums up the nature of Big Finish pretty well: they can get a cast together to produce professional quality Doctor Who on a monthly basis.

At what point has 12 ever been referred to as a beast?
Even if he gets called the valeyard at some point it doesn't mean the show has to end. The doctor getting a new name doesn't mean he doesn't still use the old names

>Dream Lord

Correction, that was the Nightmare in Silver 'evil Doctor' who was killed by the Doctor... who was basically the companion at that stage.
>>
>>81722006
>At what point has 12 ever been referred to as a beast?

The girl who was immortal called him it at one point i think... not the same anon, but that's the time i remember from it.
>>
>>81722080
No she didn't.

Go to Chakoteya, you can search the transcripts of all of the episodes she's in. The only time the word is used at all is Odin asking "What is this beast?" referring to Ashildr's fake monster. She never calls him "Beast" or anything similar.

Is today "make up theories based on clues that never even happened in the episodes" day?

>Even if he gets called the valeyard at some point it doesn't mean the show has to end.
Sure it does. I mean, the way Simeon said it, it sounded like he was just saying that was one of the names the Doctor would have before the end. And he never answered Vastra's challenge. But still, that means absolutely positively that if the Doctor is ever called the Valeyard, the show will end.

Too bad the show ended before that could happen, because of the prophecy that the Doctor's final day would come when he went to Trenzalore, which he did only a few months later.

Except that obviously none of S7 ever happened at all, because the show ended a season before that, when the Doctor returned to Lake Silencio, because Moffat had told us that his permadeath there was a fixed point in time and nothing anyone could ever do could change that.

And, as other anons pointed out, the Doctor hasn't actually been called the Beast, nor has he been called the Storm since meeting Simeon, and that whole timeline was aborted anyway, and…

But other than all that, anon is absolutely right, if anyone were to walk up to the Doctor and say "Hey, Valeyard", the show would instantly end, and there's nothing the showrunner could do about it.

And that's why they don't let Matt Whelan go near the filming anymore. Don't think he wouldn't end the show out of spite.

>I've seen it seven times already
Why?

What does this mean:

"Imagine if time all happened at once. Every moment of your life laid out around you, like a city. Streets full of buildings made of days. The day you were born; the day you die. The day you fall in love; the day love ends. A whole city built from heartbreak, and triumph, and boredom, and laughter, and cutting your toenails. The best place you’ll ever be. Time is a structure relative to ourselves, existing in the space made by our lives. Time and Relative Dimension in Space. It means life."

I feel like it's a big theme and idea but I can't work out quite what the Doctor is meaning

What do you mean? Of course it would. You would instinctively be expecting contact as your hand approaches and then reach beyond it and feel like your arms are accompanying the same space without touching.

I think he's using the general-relativity "block spacetime" view of the universe, possibly together with "emergent time" or "timeless" theories like Julian Barbour's, as a metaphor for human experience. To oversimplify a bit:

There's no difference between space and time. A second ago or an inch to the right, they're both the same thing. Nothing moves through time; everything just is where/when it is in spacetime.

But events tend to contain records of events in their past, but not of events to their right. And from that distinction, you can derive a very close approximation of linear time as we experience it. (Well, at least you can in a toy version of general relativity.)

Now, instead of thinking about records at the physical level, think about experiences and memories at the human level. All of your experiences are out there, in the same way that a table in the next house over is out there.

But without a past and a future, what's the point of life?

Well, you can define the past: it's not the traces of subatomic forces, it's the experiences that shaped you as a person. That definition won't work for anyone else (because for them, the past is the experiences that shaped them, not you), but it will work for you. Time is relative to your life.

That version is of course no longer literally true, but there's some metaphorical truth to it.

As for "Time And Relative Dimension In Space", that's wedged in there a bit clumsily, but it's pretty obvious why he did that.

And I'm sure I did a terrible job explaining block spacetime and first-order emergent time theory, but you can google for that.

Thank you very much for taking my question seriously and giving this excellent answer. I understand it so much better now, and both 12's speech and your explanation are beautiful. Many thanks!
