How many American high schools are like the ones you see in movies and TV like this?

I remember watching a particular 'urban' installment of Bring it On and it was still huge with a big auditorium and sports halls etc - but just a bit run down.

Is it for the middle-classes or are poorer districts similar?

I think it might be partly because a lot of students need to be accommodated for and so there's economies of scale? Where I'm from, each year group/cohort has maybe 125-150 students.

really depends on where you live. Typically, bigger cities have a lot of high schools with smaller populations compared to smaller areas which tend to have one, maybe 2, high schools so the population (and thus, at least hopefully, the school) is larger.

The size of the school can depend on the income level of the area or just the history--a big school in an urban area may be quite old, built when the area had seen better days. The reason why they'd use a bigger school in a Bring it On movie is for filming/practicality.

Yep. Out of all the characters, Clay is the only one who (at that point) used what he heard on the tapes to actually do something. He recognized the signs of someone in trouble that he ignored or overlooked in Hannah in Skye.

That's actually the "redemption" at the end of the book. In the book Skye only shows up twice. Once in a scene on the bus where Clay (book is from his perspective) thinks about how suddenly one day recently she started isolating herself from everyone, acting different, and started wearing only baggy, ill-fitting clothes. Clay stopped talking to her. Then at the end of the book he sees her in the hallway and says her name, and in context it's Clay reaching out to someone he thinks might be in trouble in contrast to him ignoring the signs that Hannah was in trouble.

I'm glad they changed it from the book. In the book they never give many details about what she actually did, but it's implied she overdosed on pills. Changing it to her violently slitting her wrists wearing dingy clothes in an overflowing, bare bathtub in that stark-looking bathroom and having her parents find her that way, staring lifelessly ahead in bloody water, made it much more visceral and emotional.

I know a lot of people have talked shit about Hannah waiting for him to come after her, but he really should have. It's acceptable in Clay's case for Clay to leave when Hannah says so because he's a teenager, but Porter is an adult guidance counselor. He should have immediately followed her or at the very very least, called her parents and told them what she said.

I liked it, especially compared to how meh the book was. I really liked how they fleshed out most of the characters. In the book you never get to experience them outside of what Hannah says happens.

I wish they had emphasized a little more about how everyone experiences things differently which leads to misunderstandings all around.

They touched on it a few times--with Tony saying things like "that's Hannah's truth" when Clay pointed out that what she said re: them at the party wasn't what had happened, or rather what he experienced; and Zach showing that he hadn't crumpled up the note even though Hannah thought he did; and Clay accusing Skye of stopping talking to him, and her pointing out that he's the one who saw her in the hallway but turned away instead of greeting her.

I can excuse him not knowing what to say to Hannah when she's vaguely talking about what happened at the party, although he should have recommended services to her instead of saying 'move on.' But everything she said in that session were classic examples of suicidal thoughts, and he is a mandatory reporter.

What pisses me off the most is that he KNOWS that he failed Hannah by ignoring her coming to him with suicidal thoughts, but then after Hannah's suicide, multiple students come to him expressing thoughts of suicide or in Clay's case literally admitting he was going to do it the night before, and he doesn't do anything.
