Batou Aramaki, and Togusa were the only enjoyable parts of the movie. What was with Saito appearing only at the very end so no one who knew the anime would even know who the fuck he is, and the vague ethnic woman who I don't even know if they give a name. It didn't even have any of the cool political stuff from 2nd Gig.

It was an entertaining action movie that didn't feel it's length, and while Scarlett Johanson was nothing special, the ancillary characters like Batou and the Chief were great and basically carried the movie. A lot of the special effects like the Geishas or Batou's eyes looked surprisingly convincing, as well. My only main problems were that the dialogue was a little simple, to the point that anytime they said the words "Ghost" or "Shell" I felt like rolling my eyes, and that the CGI could be a little wonky, particularly in the finale with the tank.

It wasn't that bad of an action movie. If it wasn't a ghost in the shell movie I would probably see it as a little better. But seeing them use the two movies so heavily in the story while also changing it to simplify the source material kind of let me down. Not to mention scarjo felt it made sense to walk around and act robotic. The major is kind of cold, but she doesn't move all weird like she did.

That being said aramaki was fucking awesome in the last part of the film.

Whether its the same as the original animated film or not, the theme here was definitely about identity and what makes someone.

Even if it was a little heavy handed at times, the film states that actions are what defines someone. The Major is then shown constantly taking actions that define who she is.

The fact that this movie got panned so hard, while even the biggest marvel piles of shit like Dr. Strange get like a 70 at metacritic makes me sad. It had a unique atmosphere for a hollywood blockbuster, the adapted the source material in a more mainstream-friendly way without compromising the original ideas completely (and if we're being honest the topics that seem futuristic-dystopian in 1989 don't work like that anymore in 2017).

I think it was a really solid effort. The score was really good, ScarJo fit the role and the "whitewashing" shitstorm just completely shows how people form their opinions nowadays: without having sufficient information and knowledge about the topic.

If I had to bring up some negatives it would mostly be about the CEO turning into an cliched Bond villain midway through and the backstory with her mom being a little too on the nose.

if you compare the directing of GotS to DC and Marvel blockbusters it's way more original. I'm not saying the movie is a masterpiece or that Rupert Sanders is a visual genius, but the movie had it's own distinct style, a memorable score by Clint Mansell and even though it never tackled its philosophical aspects head on (neither did the original anime) it had still way more to say than your average blockbuster.

But I feel like people - and US audiences and critics especially - were already conditioned into hating it before it was even released. The reviews are way more positive in Europe for example.

So if they were to do a sequel, what would the story be? We know Major's origins so they can't do anymore of those flashbacks scenes unless they make her mind fully hacked and they make lies about Section 9 etc after a murder or some assassination thing happens?

Has that been done in SAC before? I've only watched the anime movies.

I would like an Innocence adaptation where Major disappears into the cyber system and then it is Batou and Togusa based until Major appears near the end.

Then we could have Major be played by an Asian actress.

They could actually do a trilogy.

Why is it that so many regard the 1995 movie as a full on masterpiece? I don't understand. I guess cos I didn't grow up with it but to me it's just an alright anime that has some good action scenes, cinematography and some scenes that make you think about life (hell Adam Sandler's Click made me think more about life than the 1995 movie did).

I find the later GitS content to be better than the 1995 one. But that's my opinion.

So I just found out that the garbagemen in the movie had been previously under Kuze's control and possibly they were in that underground room where all the other people were sitting around as Kuze had them all connected to some system.

The source material is irrelevant.
Don't get me wrong, the set design, environments, visuals and action were great. But it was just so let down by the fact that every single aspect of the story was utter trash. The dialogue could have been written by a child. The story was just plain awful. It's one of those movies that should never have been released in its current state.
