The mission of /lbg/ is to promote the intelligent discussion of film as art by providing members with opportunities for intellectual discussion, by recognizing patrician taste through examinations and by calling out embryos as they arise.

The previous three threads haven't reached bump limit.

Use >>>/tv/lbg as a link to find the /lbg/ thread.

Remember the following:
>Patricians occasionally read these generals and have posted here before.

Reminder that acting is among the least important parts of what makes a film great and that if you value acting over things like the way lines and surfaces and angles and light and movement combine to create the meaningful visual expression, you are a pleb. This point cannot be argued without exposing yourself as a pleb, either. Govern yourself accordingly.

I think I might have used Letterboxd once and it was gay. Why can't you just talk about movies?

GOT TO DELETE THIS! CAN'T BE HAPPENING... CAN'T BE HAPPENING!
>>

Intolerance by D.W. Griffith is considered the first time a director consciously sacrificed mass commercial appeal to make a political point/social commentary/moral message.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is probably the first movie with what we would consider art house sensibilities.
>>
>>81135454
Your personal definition of an art film seems to be becoming increasingly specific, to the point where you're just asking what was the first DW Griffith film. Why even ask?

Any good public torrent sites for older stuff? I use rarbg for newer things and it's great, but anything older or less "mainstream" doesn't have much options if any at all.

I can't seem to get into any private trackers, so are there any good public sources?

Just watch more movies, man. Follow directors, film movements, writers, countries, genres you like. Work your way through the canon. It's not pretentious to watch movies from another country. You basically have no taste so I can't really recommend much besides the basics. Maybe try Bergman or Kurosawa? Who knows.

Also, stop watching anime.
>>
>>81145373
I mean at the very least I like stuff like Kubrick or Villeneuve, but Bergman and Kurosawa are good suggestions thanks.
>>
>>81145004
You have a lot of Haneke so watch his movies. You seem like someone who would feel more comfortable watch contemporary foreign cinema so after you finish Haneke try out Herzog, Assayas, Sorrentino, Kiarostami, Sono, Kitano, Zhang Yimou, Kim Ki-duk, and Wong Kar-wai.

First: Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence ( I might like it more than the first)

Rewatch: Ghost in the Shell ('95)

Least Favorite: Maybe Logan or T2.

I liked every movie I saw this month, and overall I liked Logan and T2. The second half of Logan was just a shitty superhero movie but the first half was very well done.

T2 was well directed and had some cool cinematography but the counterculture stuff felt phoned in and over-rebellious at times.

One of the most exciting things for me, as a reader of books pertaining to horror cinema, is when a fresh name appears on the scene with a new handle on things. This book by Canadian author-critic Alexandra West does precisely that, gathering an assortment of similarly violent yet otherwise seemingly unconnected films - HIGH TENSION, MARTYRS and IRREVERSIBLE, to name a few - and presenting them as a plausible subgenre of socio-political substance. West's persuasive text makes you want to go back and revisit this body of work from her perspective.

I find Bava one of the most overpraised of the canonic directors. That his name is a lot larger than people like Whale, Fisher or Michael Reeves is really unfair considering the quality of their cinema, but maybe his influence is bigger than I know- for whatever reason.

I'm afraid I didn't care much for KONG: SKULL ISLAND. I don't like the trend of weighing fantasy down with military hardware and weaponry, even less the trend of turning franchises into cross-referential universes built around some secret government power grid operation. Most importantly, I refuse to accept that every giant gorilla is automatically Kong. Kong is a special character and, if you're going to use him, I feel you have to earn him - not with brawn (that would give you Konga) but with character and sensitivity. Likewise, as much as I like Brie Larson, Kong needs to be complemented by a heroine with the power to humanize him, not just an empowered woman who can stand there in the midst of flying monster hair and fireballs and send up a flare.

>A Thousand Cuts is a candid exploration of one of America’s strangest and most quickly vanishing subcultures. It is about the death of physical film in the digital era and about a paranoid, secretive, eccentric, and sometimes obsessive group of film-mad collectors who made movies and their projection a private religion in the time before DVDs and Blu-rays.

>The book includes the stories of film historian/critic Leonard Maltin, TCM host Robert Osborne discussing Rock Hudson’s secret 1970s film vault, RoboCop producer Jon Davison dropping acid and screening King Kong with Jefferson Airplane at the Fillmore East, and Academy Award–winning film historian Kevin Brownlow recounting his decades-long quest to restore the 1927 Napoleon. Other lesser-known but equally fascinating subjects include one-legged former Broadway dancer Tony Turano, who lives in a Norma Desmond–like world of decaying movie memories, and notorious film pirate Al Beardsley, one of the men responsible for putting O. J. Simpson behind bars.

>Authors Dennis Bartok and Jeff Joseph examine one of the least-known episodes in modern legal history: the FBI’s and Justice Department’s campaign to harass, intimidate, and arrest film dealers and collectors in the early 1970s. Many of those persecuted were gay men. Victims included Planet of the Apes star Roddy McDowall, who was arrested in 1974 for film collecting and forced to name names of fellow collectors, including Rock Hudson and Mel Tormé.

>A Thousand Cuts explores the obsessions of the colorful individuals who created their own screening rooms, spent vast sums, negotiated underground networks, and even risked legal jeopardy to pursue their passion for real, physical film.
