I've only seen My Friend Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. My wife introduced me to those. I hadn't watched anything animated as an adult until then. We were actually talking about watching the rest of Miyazaki's stuff a few days ago (been about six years since she showed me the other two).

Where should we start? She won't watch Spirited Away or whatever the horse one is. She has something against movies about horses (even though we have three on our farm) . What is the best Miyazaki? Many say it's this one.
>>
>>81097687
no horse dies in any ghibli movie so whats the deal with the autism?
>>
>>81092114
I think the scenery is beautiful, the fantasy elements are interesting but not overly kooky, and it's the only 'man vs nature' fantasy allegory that actually makes a case for human development instead of the usual Hollywood "d00d all humanz r evil lmao" treehugging nonsense.
>>
>>81097747
You actually nailed it. Knowing that the horse doesn't die I can probably talk her into it. Animated or otherwise, she can't handle seeing animals die.
>>
>>81097687
just follow the chronology of release,

Laputa, mononoke, spirited away and porco rosso is probably the best ones.

Also watch castle of cagliostro, pretty much a ghibli film made by the same gys before the studio was founded.
>>
>>81097687
IIRC there aren't any horses in Spirited Away. Quite a lot of animals die in Princess Mononoke, mostly wild boar and wolves.
>>
>>81097808
mononoke might be the hardest watch as a fair amount of animals dies in that film, but in that movie they are conscious beings so they are more human than poor unwilling animal casually killed off.
>>
>>81091653
Honestly, Spirited away, Laputa, and Howls moving castle are the best. There's quite a few other good ones which I'm sure will be mentioned in here though.

Anyone actually enjoyed this wreck of a movie? I found it absolutely excruciating to watch. The pacing is all over the place and the characters weren't believable or sympathetic at all. I get that Miyazaki wanted to portray it all through a kids' imagination or w/e but it doesn't fucking work as a movie imo. Maybe if I was a legit braindead or a stoner I'd manage through it
>>
>>81095560
>From Up on Poppy Hill
I dont know, it was just underwhelming with no real resolution at the end. Here's some kids in post war japan an they have this old clubhouse that is about to be demolished but they spend all this time renowating it so some high up politican cancels the demolision and the protagonist have a father that never came home from the war and nothing really happens and he is in little or no way bothered by this fact.

Everything is just up front with nothing underneath it, no conflict between the teenagers, between the parents and the children or the teachers or students.

Nothing really happens in it.

I liked the first half, but the whole "abstract monster destroys everything" shit is so overplayed and goes on forever. Those nukes really imprinted on the Japs to make them put that shit in every fantasy anime ever
What I really love about the movie though is how even handed it's depiction of industrialization vs environmentalism is. Unchecked industry obviously is detrimental to everyone, but at the same time Miyazaki takes care to show how the industrialized fortress provided opportunities for the most marginalized people in society, and increased everyone's quality of life. It would be way too easy to just do "trees good metal bad"

great movie, easy 9/10 when it comes to animations. But I wish they focused more on Mononoke. Focused more on her backstory, how she came to be who she is, etc.

>>
>>81102670

She was an orphan that was raised by the queen of the wolves and the spirits of the forest. She had a chip on her shoulder because she was trapped between worlds.

If you have no familiarity with shintoism at all, why are you trying to have this debate?

If you want to angst over Christianity, go do it somewhere else. It's not what Princess Mononoke is about. Try Angel's Egg or something.
>>
>>81092864
Weird. Castle in the sky is probably my favorite ghibli movie, and I thought mononoke was just ok. I would say my #2 and 3 films are graves of the fireflies and only yesterday. I've fallen asleep twice watching kikis delivery service
>>
>>81103312
You didn't even address what I had to say, nice going, man. I'm not angsting about Christianity, I'm merely stating a fact. Do you honestly believe the average Japanese individual practices Shintoism with its declining birthrate?
>>
>>81101895
miyazaki himself prefers you watch them dubbed, so that your vision is focused on the artwork

most of the dubs are essentially produced by Pixar (with the exception of Mononoke, produced by the Weinsteins, Castle + Kiki by Disney proper and Ponyo, which was produced by Marshall\Kennedy) and they put a lot of effort into them. many of them are excellent, most of them are good, and some of them stink.

Howl's Moving Castle's dub is an improvement over the Japanese version.

Castle in the Sky and Kiki are the only ones where watching the Japanese version is required since they were produced before Pixar was involved and Disney really oversimplified the dialogue while adding more of it, changed story\theme elements and even added new music.

I personally dislike the English Nausicaa since they changed a lot of the sci-fi terminology and miscast the main character.

If you don't like the Fanning sisters, 20th Century Fox made a dub of Totoro in the 90s that you may like.

Lastly, Miyazaki prefers the French version of Porco Rosso because it has Jean Reno in the title role.
>>
>>81103402
Princess Mononoke is set hundreds of years ago and is clearly shintoist in its setting. Shintoism is the native religion of Japan and permeates their culture and thinking just like Christianity does in the West. Shintoism is featured all the time in anime and games. Shintoism is Japan's largest religion, practised by most people (the birth rate has nothing to do with the matter).

Why are you trying to hijack this movie ?
>>
>>81103503
>miyazaki himself prefers you watch them dubbed, so that your vision is focused on the artwork
Miyazaki says a lot of things, most of them not sensible.
>>
>>81103522
>(the birth rate has nothing to do with the matter)
Of course it does. All religions put stock in childbirth. You'll find that most people who aren't having children in the west are not religious.
>Why are you trying to hijack this movie ?
Hijack? Nothing I said is specific to Christianity. Here, I'll make it real simple for you:

>I didn't see the Nightwalker as symbolic of nukes, I just treated it at face value as a god pissed off at humans for fucking with him. If you take it that way, it's reflective of the fact that gods have essentially died in the eyes of the average individual; he doesn't factor into our daily lives anymore.

>Okkoto has this to say:
>Look on my tribe, Morro. We grow small, and we grow stupid. We will soon be nothing but squealing game...that the humans hunt for their meat.
Humans not caring about gods, actively looking to murder them. God(s) dying in the eyes of the average individual. Reflective of our world, and the last hundred years of people moving away from being hardcore religious. You didn't address this point the first time. I don't expect you to this time, either.

Indeed. However a cursory glance at aspects of the Shinto religion states that they even have talismans available denoting a safe childbirth. Japan's birthrate is the lowest it's ever been. Still wanna tell me Shinto purveys the land of the rising sun?

>Yes. Tell me who's buying the talismans sold by the religion if nobody's fucking.
But people are fucking. Japan has LOW birthrates, not ZERO birthrates. And what does this even have to do with anything? The fact is that shintoism is practised by most Japanese people. You can't reason your way out of that with these weird mental gymnastics.

It's amazing that you've gone from insisting the movie has nothing to do with shintoism to insisting that Japan itself has nothing to do with shintoism. Just what the hell is your problem?

A cursory glance at Shinto puts a lot of value in children. I can bring up links should you ask. Now what does it mean for a country's practice of its purported national religion, a religion that, as I just stated, puts value in children, when that country has extremely low birthrates?
A. They're practicing it with exactly the same gusto as their eighth century ancestors
B. They're not
Pick one. This isn't a difficult question.

>It's amazing that you've gone from insisting the movie has nothing to do with shintoism
My only insistence was that the Nightwalker doesn't represent nukes, and that his death represents the death of god(s) among the general populace. Then you came out with:
>Shintoism isn't monotheistic, and the movie takes place hundreds of years ago when people were more religious.
As if my point wasn't applicable to a polytheistic religion. Then I came from a place of ignorance insinuating the film had nothing to do with Shinto. Now we're here. You seem to think I'm talking exclusively about Christianity in my assertion. I am not. We done, yet?
>>
>>81104515
Again:
>The fact is that shintoism is practised by most Japanese people. You can't reason your way out of that with these weird mental gymnastics.
You are thinking of shintoism as if it were Christianity, which it isn't.

There's something about the short-hair and blue sky and general energy which this poster and movie has which gives it the vulnerability I think most teenagers believe is missing from their lives, like the general rules of society have been infringed upon by complexes which anime eschews. Miyazaki doesn't necessarily understand how shitty some of the dubs of his films are. He has the luxury of netting some of the most consistently high quality dubbing work out of most 'foreign language' animation, but even then some of the dubs are duds that crap all over the original work, Wind Warriors aside.

Spirited Away and Cat Returns are both particularly egregious. SA specifically is quite insidious, in that it avoids making any 'cuts', but the changes to the dialog severely alter plot points, themes and characterization to the point where it barely feels like the same movie in English, but otherwise feels like a decent, regular kids movie to anyone who just watched it expecting that. For something like Naussica the dub is probably fine and the more ideal experience, but that doesn't apply to everything.

>You're just as much of a desperate loonie as those retards who think Spirited Away is about prostitution

Look, the film isn't about prostitution, but it it is heavily based around themes of exploration in general and doesn't completely shy away from the 'sexual' (which I mean in the broadest possible sense) implications of this.

Like, it's one thing to claim that "really, Spirited Away, despite appearing on the surface like an innocent kids film, is actually a really dark and adult movie about the Japanese sex industry and everyone wants to bang Chihiro or force her to fuck everyone and blah blah etc." that we can happily reject. But at the same time it feels silly to deny the undercurrent of exploitation that is there, and that that at the very least there are characters who are very much interested in Chihiro in likely more than platonic ways. It isn't "about sex" by any stretch, but it is very much based around portraying the ways various elements of society might try to exploit a vulnerable young girl.
>>
>>81098555
It holds a special place for me only because it was the first time I got to see a Ghibli movie on the big screen and it was pretty to look at. But I agree as a film, it's probably one of the weakest in their canon.

My top three are (in no order):
Castle of Cagliostro
Totoro
Spirited Away

My first Studio Ghibli film was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

It's still my favorite animated film of all time and I knew that after I watched it.

The dub for the Ghibli movies are fine. These are movies you want to take everything in instead of paying attention to the bottom of the screen. Don't listen to weebs like >>81101971 who are in love with the Japanese language to the point where it can do no wrong.

Is it not too late to mention this recent kino?

Watch them how you want, I flip-flop between watching with subtitles or the English dub.

i was watching Howl dubbed for some reason a while back, and Christian Bale is howl's VA - he literally does the Batman voice a few times, and it's funny because the Batman movies were coming out around that time.

nice post desu. I relate to that feeling of appreciating realness in a personality as it comes out through quirks and other miscellanious traits like that
