Many assorted movies I would pick out from any scattered amount of years through the 20's and 40's that I liked, I would find her reviews lined up exactly with my feelings and fully deluged the essence of each title. She was also against the auteur theory as am I, and was a great fan of Griffith and Altman, as am I. Years later after I discovered her book, I found that a lot of her favorite movies were mine as well, titles not spoken of by most "critics."

That's precisely what the "auteur theory" is really only geared towards. It's a stipulation set up to favor those that cover all matters of production. That doesn't make a piece of work better. Perhaps impressive, but not better! That's why you see young people misinterpreting the "outdated term", self-proclaimed by its originators, and contorting it into "vulgar auteurism". There is no vulgar auteurism, you're either an auteur or you're not. Alfred Hitchcock was considered a "vulgar auteur" because his body of work was primarily thrillers.

Truffaut and Godard both said later in their lives that auteur was an outdated term only still used in America. After they actually stepped behind the camera, they learned of the collaborative nature of film, and pressed great appreciation for the cinematographers, editors, and so on that worked with them. What made the term auteur gain spotlight was not only Andrew Sarris peddling the term off the French critics in the 60's, but also Andre Bazin penning his own theories on what cinema was and other critics from the magazine making their own films taking their knowledge of film history, theories, and developing a new language for cinema. Their films gained popularity in festivals and notoriety overseas in conjunction with the cultural shifts that happened in the 60's, audiences in America began watching French and Italian films as well as tv over what the studio system was producing. After big epics and musicals flopped and Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider became successes, this led to the American New Wave which then peddled off what was learned from the French. This is where the term auteur gets its spotlight. It gained notoriety as a term through the influence of films the makers produced that exemplified what they professed and further developed film language. But Robert Altman said, and held to his grave in 2006, that a FILM has NOT been made yet. Even William Friedkin said the medium hasn't evolved since the 60's.

This is why I'm always here to post my list. I have my own developed theories, and I am cataloguing all films that have developed film vocabulary and language, films that contributed largely to the art of cinema, and compiling them to understand the canon. Where we are now and what can be done to MAKE a film.

The documentary is the most quintessential essence of cinema and it has the most untapped potential. Cinema was created to capture motion, that is what separates it from other mediums. It was also created to capture and document reality. My theories lie in the aforementioned and cinema's ability to depict relationships, behavior, evolution, and reflection.This is why the documentary is so integral, and untapped. This is why the television special in 1973, an American Family, was so groundbreaking in the field of psychology.This is why Boyhood achieved acclaim as pushing cinema forward. A narrative shaped over time that had a systematic relationship with a boy's growth.

A film has not been made yet. All of these movements and genres have developed the building blocks of the language, but the film has NOT been made yet.

Those films are vitally important because not only did they develop the vocabulary of cinema, they utilize one of its most supremely important abilities to depict real life in motion. Without these films or the existence of cinema in the early part of the 20th century, we wouldn't be able to witness those early decades in living motion. You have to be a good historian before you become a good critic because otherwise you'd be praising a reinvention of the wheel. Much like the rest of the reviewers I will echo the praise the supporting cast and the direction of the action in the ring. I do have issue with Mark Wahlberg as the lead.
