There's already so many posts. Let's draw some of it out for a deeper look, toy with it, take it into a new light with inventive and expressive posting. Freud would suggest doing so as a way to look into our minds.

Since I have no idea how to even begin explaining why I hadn't seen this yet, despite being a self-proclaimed film lover, I won't even try. I've been embarrassed about this fact for a while now but I always felt somewhat wary about a 3-hour spaghetti western. For the first hour of this I was fearing the worst, as aside from a standout scene with Lee van Cleef at a dinner table, I wasn't feeling the film at all (whereas I was instantly hooked by Once Upon a Time in the West for instance) and worried for the rest of the film. However, as the film went on it grew and grew, and for its entire second half it was impossible for me not to be completely absorbed by this sweeping epic. The film's central character trio, each uniquely memorable, and the dynamics they offer are as irresistible as I was led to believe, but it was how Leone tastefully intertwined the civil war as background for this small but riveting story that I was really taken aback by. Amidst the exceedingly masculine ego games between the three main characters the film finds time for moments of quiet beauty and, when needed, affecting tragedy - the final scene with the captain being one of such scenes. A deserving classic and definitley my favourite in the trilogy.

The timeless scent of flop is so palpable in this movie that it hurts and I actually felt a little sorry for Griffith watching this. So many eggs in such a small basket.

AMERICA is an overlong and at times amazingly dull depiction of historical events told through disjointed sequences of been there-battle scenes and melodramatic intrigue with boring characters that just won't do anything. Whatever cinematic power you'd recieve from the film is lost in formal, book-length, high-falooting intertitles with more words than space (eventually I went "Please, no more!")

The only reason you, as well as other modern youth, prefer Einstein and Soviet montagists, is because since the 80's with MTV and music videos, films have progressively opted for a music video approach with frenetic editing. Whereas in the 60's and 70's long takes were preferred and taken from the theories of Andre Bazin and the French new wave. You consider montage modern but in actuality those still alive from the 60's and 70's consider it outdated and a regression. Montage doesn't take skill or participation from the director nor the audience. That's why many young people bemoan films from the 60's and 70's as being "too slow" and "boring"
