>>
>>80775226
to be honest its the only one ive seen from him. didnt know his other films were worth checking out. never considered looking into it.

its my favorite sort of noir film, although the twist isnt that big. its a good ride tho and elliot gould is really fun to watch. he really plays the character well.

cant say im familiar with any films you have. which ones would you highly recommend? im still trying to get into foreign films and havent gone further than das boot and the stalker, and a few others

Not him but, if you are looking for your basic entry level foreign films I recommend Seven Samurai, High & Low, The 400 Blows, Seventh Seal, if you liked Stalker try Ivan's Childhood and go through Tarkovsky's filmography.

what do you want me to say? everything in this thread is entry level as fuck with some epic criterion stuff thrown in for good measure

do you guys just watch stuff that's available on netflix? it's clear from these 3 x 3's that you haven't found any facet of film you've loved that's made you go further into it. every flick you guys like is narrative with nothing unique about it.

if you actually had good taste you would have found your niche and posted a 3 x 3 of movies you truly loved. either you have shit taste and low iq OR you haven't seen enough movies
>>
>>80773422
Is middle movie on the right from the long goodbye? Or am I thinking of the wrong Jew.
>>
>>80776320
Or some of the most known films are also some of the best, and watching more films most likely won't lead those more niche ones to surpass the great known ones.
>>
>>80776223
what does the 2/3 means? do you mean a 2/5 as in a 2 out of 5 i will end you reeeee if you don't like those movies than nigga walk away from the screen like nigga close your eyes
>>
>>
>>80776390
or the people who like them have just as entry level taste as you do and that's why they're so well known

i bet you think a movie winning an oscar makes it good too
>>
>>80776320
saying that some of those movies has nothing unique about them and that liking a movie with a narrative is somehow bad is really going overboard
>>
>>80776442
winning an oscar isn't a clear indicator to how popular it is. That usually follows after it wins the oscar.

ok
i liked blade runner, also we are different posters

its a very atmospherical film, not only from the world building but from the way the characters are presented and how the film let the visuals present themselves to the viewer

to help with this atmosphere the film also plays with rain and light, which makes for some amazing imagery throughout

decker is the protagonist yet he feels so distant from the viewer, i think the film nailed this pretty good, and its my favorite from Scott

there's clearly one way to interpret it and it's obvious what you're meant to get out of it due to the stream of conciousness, clips of russian history and the plot being loosely based on tarkvoskys life
if you can't put two and two together then think about how the main interpretation works with your own then form an opinion from that then you're a retard
you've just taken the film at face value then philsophised about it instead of actually reading into it

>what else my nig
Nothing my negroe, that will do anon. I certainly appreciate the visuals, but I think that is the sole strength of Blade Runner, as it's themes are quite shallow compared to the book. Usually film deviating from source material can lead to new creativity, but that's not the case with Blade Runner. It doesn't explore the nature of empathy like the book, and the Tyrell corporation motto rings true: "more human than human", simply making the replicants, humans to sympathize with, which is nothing new in sci fi territory desu. I highly recommend the book as it's commentary is rather foretelling, and it has some interesting parallels with Christianity, Judaism and Jews as well, which I think were intentional by Philip K. Dick.
>>
>>80777614

thanks for the comment anon, i must say i havent read the book, so cant really comment on what the film misses

i thought the empathy loss was actually intentional, with the kinda anonymous and distant characters, they remain mysterious and not open for us to engage with, at least thats how i felt it

also if you're talking about empathy between replicants and humans, i also think the film delivered that pretty good, because all characters felt neutral in a way, you know?

and i thought it was a very humanist film, not at all shallow, but cant comment further on its relation with the book

>i thought the empathy loss was actually intentional, with the kinda anonymous and distant characters, they remain mysterious and not open for us to engage with

I think you misread, in the book, you don't empathize with them, as they don't empathize. In the film Scott makes it clear that they are sympathetic characters.
>and i thought it was a very humanist film

Yes, that's why it's a very shallow film compared to the book in my opinion. "Humanist" themes like that have been done very often, whereas the book explores the difference between humans and "replicants" (they are called Androids in the book, hence the title "Do Androids dream of electric sheep") The primary difference being the ability to empathize, so Scott reversed the roles in the film, making the human characters rather unsympathetic, with Deckard being a ruthless killer (the scene where he guns down that girl through the glass) and he gives the replicants much more emotion, with Rachel, and Roy (the end speech, which I admit is well done). So the film succeeds in the visual department, but thematically is little compared to the book. Which I again suggest reading highly.

What is >1/3 even supposed to mean? You liked 1 out of the 3 movies you saw? You liked 1/3 of the films posted as you've seen 3/9ths? You need to get your critic together, I said don't hold back and you gave me some minimalist shit, and beyond that, you haven't seen some great movies, and that 3x3 is pretty mainstream.

Here's the list in order of appearance from top left to bottom rights, watch these films.

>Blow Out
>Taxi Driver
>Raising Cain
>Drive
>Pain & Gain
>Blow Out again (Nancy is a qt3.14)
>Obsession
>Point Break

I don't think I've seen a Brian De Palma movie I haven't enjoyed, but I haven't seen his comedies and his anti-war movies (I heard they weren't very well). I just think he's got a very creative eye, when he wants to he can shoot some great angles to get a nice visual illusions. He also has a very sensual (and sexual) touch as well with stuff like Dressed to Kill, Body Double, or Femme Fatale. I think he's very versatile too, making some pop culture staples like The Untouchables or Scar Face, and then doing something that would otherwise be relegated to B-movie territory with some transsexual killer. He's really willing to do things outside of mainstream Hollywood. Film is a visual medium, and he maximizes it's potential.

>diopters
What does this word mean?

>>80781491
Seriously anon, he's one of my favorites, I can't laud him enough. Beautiful films, and beautiful women.
>>
>>80781727
De Palma used a lot of split diopter camerawork, which basically focuses half the frame on the foreground and half on the background, with kind of a blurry smudgy area between them.
>>
>>80781727
taking it from google cause it'll explain far batter than i can
"Diopters are optical elements that can be placed in front of a prime or zoom lens, offering a fast and convenient way to increase the lens' magnification. In practical terms they move both the close and far focus distance of a lens closer to the film plane; on one hand the lens can focus closer than its native close focus distance, but on the other the far focus moves from infinity to a closer value. The strength or magnification of a Diopter is expressed in the 'diopter power' number."

Oh yeah, like the frame with Travolta, another technique he's fond of is the split screen, which isn't seen very often. One of the things I like is that he uses the visuals as important part of the larger story, like when Antonio Banderas is taking pictures of Rebecca Romijn in Femme Fatale, it's not just an embellishment for the sake of it, and it's without pretension if that makes sense? He's not doing it as a gimmick, like say Ineretu or whatever that Mexican guy's name is.

>>80781879
>>80781805
Thanks for the explanation as well. Body Double, Blow Out, and Dressed to Kill all have a similar feel and they came out around the same time as Scar Face. If you can get into him, you'd probably really enjoy his other films as well, you can see in his earlier work, experimentation with stuff that would later be a staple, and it's nice to see how he evolved so to speak. Even if most critics aren't big fans, don't let those glib prudes get you down.

And I never know whether to put "my favorite movies to watch over and over" or 'my favorite kino' because those are two very different lists. So I just tried to put a mix of both, like Blade Runner. Yeah everybody and their dog has got Blade Runner on their 3x3 but it's perfect, because it straddles the line of "fun/enjoyable" and 'kino/artistic'.

>>

Also switch Lost and Translation to the bottom left so that the line leads towards the middle. Can't really fit faces in, but that's alright. Honestly it probably doesn't matter, I might have autism, you could also do something, with 3 oranges, Alien, Apocalypse Now and Twin Peaks, contrasted with the darkes and blues of Under the Skin, Donnie Darko and Mulholland Drive.

What is the benefit of obscuring the title of the film? At best, you can highlight interesting images from certain films, and prevent people from voicing opinions on films they've never seen - at worst, you prevent people from exploring their tastes, introduce unnecessary confusion, encourage a glut of posts of asking/answering which film is which, and make yourself appear to be both conceited and seeking validation.

because it defeats the purpose of using scenes to represent the movie. You would rather the movie cover itself with the title visible but there's no fun in that and making a mosaic of movie covers is stupid. No one is stopping you from making yours that way though.

How so? The image would be unchanged, and context would be provided if needed. Further, the title is already implied for those who are aware of the film. Refusing to include that information in the original post (yet seemingly being perfectly fine with providing that information upon request) only serves to harm the quality of the thread.

For example: outside of the context of this thread, does a title defeat the purpose of a work? Does labeling Citizen Kane, "Citizen Kane", mean that it is less than it would be otherwise? No, it is a means for assigning a definition to the work so that it made be discussed.
>>

>>
>>80785458
the purpose being to see how many you recognize without looking down or reading spoilers. The ones you don't recognize evoke curiosity and you ask the title. This promotes more discussion not less.
If the titles are included there really isn't anything to talk about, I either fuck off and google it or I don't.

Also, I only speak for myself but I really don't want to write down all the titles every time I post the fucking picture. im lazy..
