Who the fuck green-lit this? More importantly: Why?
ffs how hard can it be to find a skinny, balding British actor?
There's no way having a different actor portray the character 40 years latre is less immersion-shattering than giving this uncanny valley abomination center stage in multiple scenes. I honestly couldn't stop thinking about it every time he was in screen.

And CGI Leia looked even worse.
>>
>>80769671
I might be retarded, but when I first saw this movie, but I'm not a big Star Wars guy, and I hadn't seen the OT in a while, so when Tarkin showed up, I didn't notice he was CGI.
Then I saw it a second time, this time with the knowledge it was CGI, and THEN it looked CGI.
>>
They recast Dodonna and Romodi because they're literal who background characters. Recast someone like Tarkin and you'll get a bunch of "hurr that looks nothing like Tarkin".
>>
>>80769671
that actually looks pretty damn good

It looked great. Yes, if you stare at it looking for flaws like an autist you'll see some. If you suspend disbelief as these flicks require, it's great.

Also, he didn't roll his "R's" as strongly as Cushing did. It made me aware that it wasn't Tarkin as much as the CGI.
I know Peter Cushing is dead, and they had to do something to replace him in Rogue One. Unless they were going to recast him, they'd have to CGI him. I looked at Tarkin and Leia the same way I look at CG Yoda or Jar Jar. They're not real, I know that. They're real in the scene, though, so that's good enough for me. And this was a DAMN good effort.

The issue is not whether or not he looks "pretty good."
The issue is that a neurotypical human mind can immediately spot how off it looks.
And seriously, for what? To test the tech? That's the only reason I can think of.

When you have it in your mind that this is cgi and activally look for flaws then you're obviously going to find flaws.

The only issue with CGI Tarkin was the decision to give him so much screentime where he's face to face with live actors. If they cut his screentime and replaced it more with Vader, it would have been much better.

It's not perfect, it's easy to tell at least for me (should be mentioned my parents were actually fooled) but it's still an impressive effect.

It describes a feeling of discomfort and revulsion observed in people when they look at things that strongly resemble humans but not exactly.
Until CGI was a thing only roboticists knew or cared about it.
But yeah, a human representation that's REALLY REALLY close but not perfect will elicit a far more negative reaction than something more stylized. Same reason porcelain dolls and realgirls are creepy as fuck.

Most popular evolutionary psychology theory is that it's a mechanism to keep us from playing with corpses and walking away with diseases

They did a pretty good job of it. It was some of the best CG people I've ever seen. By far the most realistic job that has EVER been done.

The stills look nearly perfect. The problem is the lighting doesn't quite reflect off them and cast shadows in a natural manner. This is hard to see in stills but more obvious in the actual movie.

But all that being said, they did a good job of it. To my knowledge this has been the only movie that has inserted CG people into a live action film. It's a great first attempt at it.

They may have to do this in Star Wars Episode 9 depending on how much the plot points involve Leia.

People talk shit about the CGI humans in Rogue One and also Arny in Terminator Genisys.

>>
>>80769671
If anything, the biggest fuckup was having his uniform too perfect.

The real actor version of Tarkin has a uniform with little rumples and puckers to the fabric, like any real person's clothes will get after a day of wearing them around the workplace, while CGI Tarkin's outfit looks like it just came back from the dry cleaner.

what kind of a shit theater did you all go to? It was obvious as fuck that he was animated. They'd be much better off with a similar looking actor with some prosthetics and make up. Lucas may have sold SW, but his goofy CGI meme legacy continues

Yoda and Jar Jar were completely CG. Tarkin and Leia had actors standing in and only their faces were superimposed.

You people are so jealous that Star Wars is back and better than ever because of Disney. Disney is doing an awesome job, deal with it plebs!

>Who CARES what the media thinks they don't represent anybody

Apparently the only opinions anon cares about are the ones his aunt shares on facebook, and only then when he agrees with her
>>

how is this an argument against tarkin looking terrible?
>Yoda and Jar Jar
were not human, pls read up on what your trying to discuss, start with 'uncanny valley'
>>
You faggots will never be happy. What about Avatar, or the CGI soldiers in the prequels? What is it about a scene having the volume of CGI that makes your brains disconnect and say; "this is fine, I can accept this" But a competently done CGI Tarkin is too much?
>>
>>80780932
avatars were also not meant to be human, the solders from the prequels didn't have faces, and everyone shits on the prequel cgi anyway, stop pretending not to get this shill
>>
>>80780932
It's way easier to accept in a movie that's basically a cartoon with some rotoscoping, than a live action movie with a skin colored Roger Rabbit.
>>
>>80780932
Literally the Uncanny Valley you sperg.
You would be able to understand the difference if you were neurotypical.

his facial movements remind me of the monkey from the new planet of the apes. They probably have some CGI facial movement engine that VFX guys use for different productions.

Nobody cared that Yoda and Jar Jar were Total CG. People were pissed off about how terrible the dialogue and directing was!

You will see that so many people are nit picking this movie but you can do that to any movie. This movies story was perfectly acceptable and a nice addition to the Star Wars canon. That's all it was supposed to be, just that simple.
>>
>>80770973
oh shit nigga, that would have been perfect.
probably cheaper too

Don't pretend like you autists and the hordes of Star Wars fans wouldn't be shrieking if they replaced Cushing with another actor. I agree it isn't true to life, I doubt any CGI human model in motion will ever be completely convincing, but it's not as distractingly bad as you're making out. Of all the flaws of this movie, this is the most nitpicking.
>>
>>80781079
People didn't complain about full CG Yoda because Episode 1 had a practical puppet Yoda that looked incredibly bad that they ended up replacing with CG later
>>
Honestly they should have just got Guy Henry (the dude actually doing the mocap and voice for Tarkin) to just play him fully himself, without all the CGI shit. He doesn't need to look exactly like Cushing, the whole fucking aesthetic of these films is completely different to what it used to be anyway. Just slap on some age makeup and contacts and run with it. The CGI really did stand out like a sore thumb in the cinema.
>>
>>80781180
Unlike your mother when she's paying your bills, I don't shriek. The CGi is bad. Deal with it.
>>
>>80781203
They did the CG thing because R1 is meant to be watched back-to-back with A New Hope. Two different Tarkins would be jarring.

Notice they used recreations for the other people who show up in ANH like the squadron leaders, while Mon Mothma has a replacement because you don't see her again until Jedi.
>>
>>80769671
the movie is just a publicly funded R&D project for Hollywood to perfect the CGI actor technology so they can use them in place of paying for actual actors in the future. It's not perfect now but they are learning from it and continuing to improve on it. If they didn't bother with it because it doesn't look good enough now then no innovation can take place.
>>
>>80781285
The whole fucking film looking completely different because it was made forty years earlier with different technology and different prop/set/art guys is far more jarring than having a different guy with a similar look and similar voice playing Tarkin in a few scenes.

Tarkin looked fine.

With the Leia scene they messed it up with direction, just a bad style of shot to focus on.
>>
>>80781180
My dude, I genuinely could not give less of a fuck if someone other than Cushing played Tarkin. They literally did that already in Episode III and nobody cared.

In all seriousness the worst thing about the Disney Wars movies thus far is the excessive fanservice, seemingly to placate fan fears of Disney "RUINING MUH CHILDHOOD". So the movies instead get bogged down with all this "HEY GUYS DON'T WORRY WE LOVE STAR WARS TOO WE'VE ALL SEEN THE SAME MOVIES ISN'T IT GREAT" shit.
>>
>>80781434
He looked a lot better than Leia but he did not look "fine".
>>
>>80781410
Actually it does a pretty decent job of looking similar tech and time frame wise. Much more than either Episode 3 or 7 did.
