The giant holograms seen circling the city’s skyscrapers are called ‘solograms’ because they appear solid. Like the original, the city is ‘based on’ Hong Kong but not necessarily identified as Hong Kong. The Major is confirmed to be only a brain in a completely cybernetic body, again like in the original. Batou does not start the movie with his cybernetic eyes, but receives them part way through the movie. Also, only his left arm is cyberized. Aramaki and Togusa are largely un-cyberized, as with the original. Boma, Saito and Ishikawa are pretty much unchanged from the original as well, including Saito’s Hawkeye satellite link, with some good creative and non-whitewashed casting. Did you know Boma was originally white in the anime? New team member Ladriya is an explosives expert. Hideo Kuze is described as being a composite of the Puppetmaster, the Laughing Man and the Kuze from SAC2. New character Dr. Ouelet (played by Juliette Binoche) is the robotics expert who created the Major’s new body following an accident, but is also apparently responsible for an experiment on Hideo Kuze, which has left him on the run, repairing himself in a patchwork of spare parts. The garbage truck driver, referred to here as the Skinny Man, that fights the Major, has been hacked by Kuze, and is attempting to assassinate Dr Ouelet. Indeed, it seems he is successful in doing so. The real antagonists are rival government agency Section 6, the leader of which, known as Cutter, wants the Major killed as in her memories are apparently something that will reveal he was involved in the accident where she was nearly killed. Section 6 at some point also tries to kill Aramaki – these are the agents he fights in the car park. Kuze is much more ambiguous – thought to be the antagonist in the first half of the movie but revealed as a much more sympathetic character in the second half. He is not involved in refugees in this story

I'd like to weigh in as an Asian American, since I don't think one has posted so far.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Asians living in Asia and Asian Americans have very different perspectives on representation in Western media. While Japanese people (Japanese nationals) may not have a problem with a white actress taking over an Asian role in an American film, you have to remember they have a ton of Japanese media with Japanese representation to fall back on. They don't care about whitewashing in Western media because they mostly consume Asian media, which has a ton of Asians.

The same thing applies to The Great Wall and Matt Damon (desu I didn't really care about what they did since it's a Chinese production, not a Western one).

However, Asian Americans are members of Western society and consume mostly Western media, where good representation of Asians is scarce. Asian females are usually eye candy/the love interest of the white guy, while Asian males are usually emasculated nerds/desexualized martial artists. Most films don't even have Asians in speaking roles. Characters like Glenn from The Walking Dead are few and far between, and Steven Yeun still has to do auditions for 5 line roles. Filmmakers are so averse to casting Asians that they often don't even cast Asians as Asians.

So when Asian Americans make a big stink about a white person being cast in an Asian role, it's not so much about "People should play their own races" but "Why can't we even play Asians?". In an ideal world, actors and actresses should be able to play any character, but Asian Americans have been marginalized in the industry for far too long.

The Japanese people who don't have a problem with the Major being played by ScarJo don't know what it's like to be a minority in your own country, or what it's like to be excited to see a face on the screen because you finally see someone who looks like you.

I don't think that these roles should belong to Asians/Asian Americans, but when it's even more unlikely to get a role that has nothing to do with being Asian, you tend to be protective of what you can get. This whole controversy wouldn't be an issue if Asian Americans weren't so underrepresented in the media.

On the Asian American community's response, I have noticed a decrease in nuance in the reaction to Asian portrayals and issues from the AA community. I think this is what happens when there's a lot of unresolved frustration that bubbles beneath the surface without release until it spills over.
