What would you think of a one off 12 episode multi-Doctor series spinoff in like 5 years

You would have say Capaldi, Smith, Tennant, Mcgann etc have one or two episodes each with a unique monster, but there's an overarching plot tying them together, you could explain their older looking age as a plot point, the finale is all the Doctors together, there's one over arching villain targeting these 4 doctors at specific moments in their timeline.

Capaldi would be the 12th Doctor from just before the Husbands of River Song

Tennant before TOT

Smith just after he lost Amy and Rory

McGann before just before becoming the War Doctor.

I assume time-traveling humans like Kovarian or John from Torchwood don't count, but what about, say, A Christmas Carol? There are flying sharks, but they're just a sideshow; the actual enemy is just a powerful guy in a normal future Earth colony. Or The Beast Below, where there are scary robots, but they're just working for the British government, and there's really no enemy?

If you want a pure historical, or a present-day humans-only story… the show really hasn't done that since the 60s, except for a few experiments like Black Orchid that didn't go over very well, so it probably won't happen until the show is at a peak again so the showrunner feels like it's worth taking a chance.

You'd think that Big Finish might inspire them to take a risk.

Big Finish did a pure historical in their first year, while reintroducing the least popular Doctor, without a familiar companion, and The Marian Conspiracy turned out to be one of their biggest hits. And most of their others have been well received over the last 17 years.

Doesn't that imply that maybe the problem with Black Orchid wasn't "historicals don't work" but "historicals don't work if they have no plot and the script is so bad that the actors are on the verge of rebellion"?

Because the companion will shine a light on thir world by react to it in a different way than they do.

And, really, most modern period pieces seem to feel the need to give at least on character an anachronistically modern viewpoint, which annoys me more than having Evelyn Smythe be that modern viewpoint.

Also, the companion doesn't have to be contemporary. Erimem works great in historicals after her own time.

I disagree with anon that there's anything wrong with it, but I am curious how it happened.

I have one friend who did something similar, but I thought she was a unique case. She'd watched one or two episodes of Classic Who in the 80s and hated the cheapness of it, and would never let me talk about it with her. But then one day, she was at my house alone for a few hours and for some reason picked up Transit. She asked to borrow that, and then asked to borrow the best other NAs, and then some McCoy audios, and only then did I finally get her to watch Remembrance of the Daleks. A decade later, she's finally seen most of Classic Who, but she never would have believed the stories were worth putting up with the production values if not for the novels and audios.

to be honest, all of them were a while ago when I was young and I can't really remember much. Sylvester McCoy showed up late to his signing but then started fighting a Dalek with his umbrella in front of the queue. When I saw Tom Baker, my Dad brought a vinyl record of him reading one of the novelisations and Tom seemed intrigued by it. He also gave out Jelly Babies to everyone.
