Is this the current most underrated show on all of television?
>>
>>79740007
overatted
>>
>600k viewers on syfy
>10+k on torrents
yeah
>>
>>79740007
I have the exact opposite opinion. It's pathetically over rated and the fans refuse to acknowledge the problems the show has. I don't think it's down right bad but if you ever venture into a thread about the mother fucker and you don't tow the faggoty "omg everything is just like so craze amaze and perf! yass queen! slay boo"line you're attacked and ridiculed. Thank goodness this site is anonymous because I hate expanse fanboys and wouldn't be able to take them seriously in any context
>>
>>79740007
No, takes forever for anything to happen.
>>
>>79740095
>>79740587
don't venture into a threads, just watch the show.
S1 maybe isn't really shining mainly bc the cast, but at the end you'll accept them, then S2 you'll even start liking them, while the plot overkills all the bigscreen bigbudget scifi movies you saw in your entire life.

>>79740620
>what's buildup and setting

I skipped the first 5 episodes and I don't intend on watching them ever. I honestly doubt I missed a damn thing.

maybe you should just stick with sunnyphiladelphia and family guy
>>
>>79740007
In all seriousness it's probably Agents of SHIELD. Not because it's brilliant, just because it's better than any other capeshit on TV at the moment despite everyone calling it terrible. The last episode was genuinely very good.
>>
>>79741239
Well then tell me what I missed you raging faggot. Oh that's right you can't because literally nothing happens that matters that isn't talked to death even more by the end of the season.

lol radar and visible light are all still just electromagnetic waves, why didnt eros go fully stealth if it can just magically stop radar waves?

i mean i dont think its GoT-level yet but it BTFOs shit like walking dead and gets less views ?.

The pacing in this feels like a netflix show, you really have to binge several episode at a time to get a good chunk of anything it's so slow.

>>79742943
Same reason this is able to have little radar reflection, but still reflects all of the visible light.
Different wavelengths of radiation behave differently in that they are blocked, refracted and reflected by different things differently.
>>
>>79743056
that is designed specificlaly for that and still isn't 100% perfect, it's just designed to deflect radar waves from the side

eros is a giant asteroid and made no physical change to its surface, it simply just decided to stop reflecting them at all.
>>
>>79743035
It's funny though, how all the events in the show take waaaay longer than they actually appear on screen. Any faster pacing would be ridiculous.
>>
>>79742943
long range radar of the missiles is (relatively) low energy so absorbing it isnt that big of a deal to eros (but causes it to heat up abit).
but due to the roci being close even if eros went invisible they'd still see it on infra red\some thermal emissions due to bolzmann law .
the expanse is kinda realistic in that regard, even the stealth ships can only be stealthy as long as they dont burn\ only use cold inefficient propellant.
if you want a viable thermal stealth option look up james webb space telescope ,basically has all its hot parts isolated from the cold ones .
>>
>>79743111
It also directly violated known laws of physics by changing course and accelerating such a huge mass instantly without turning every living and non-living thing on it into paste, which was directly talked about in the show.

The Alien Goo is sufficiently advanced technology, end of story.
>>
>>79743111
the thing out of this galaxy made it happen. you don't know what it's capable of, yet you complain
>>
It's probably gonna go downhill now that the most interesting character & better actor is kill but eh.
>>
>>79743111
eros is either coated in protomolecule stuff that absorbs the radio or emits a jamming signal (destructive interference) to the missile's radar.
the second option would explain why it cant be stealthy to visual light because if it emits the jamming signal through the station (protomolecule is only inside eros, not outside) , it cant emit visual light through the surface because visual wont penetrate the surface while radio will.
>>
>>79743218
We don't know he's kill just yet
>>
>>79743218
yeah, bc the alien thing, the main plot of the whole story didn't survived the crash, and saved them

this, last ep probably spans a few days and ignored all the relativistic effects.
also accelerating eros at 15-20 g's for days would make a way bigger explosion on venus then we saw, the explosion of hitting the dense atmosphere at that speed alone would tear most of venus's atmosphere off.

>>79742987
people don't like sci fi, shit i read a ton of sci fi and even i couldn't get into the expanse. halfway through episode 1 i was like, why don't i just fucking watch blade runner?

The biggest problem all these shows is hitting a sweetspot between soap opera and space tech stuff. BSG managed to do it because it sold SEX SEX SEX, the reason it drew in normies was the ridiculous amount of T&A in every season basically, and that overcame the aversion most people have to tech babble and boring things like space ships and engineers etc.

What pulls you into these shows is often a good hook or story, and to me personally detective noir is just lazy, it's been done TO DEATH and basically to perfection by the 1930s and 40s, what are you adding to the mix by putting it in space and having some mutated freaks and some new lingo and trying to world build.

I loved Stargate because it established a crew, you could drop in at any random point in the season and understand basically whats going on, and they could go to the well hundreds of times with the same formula. Star Trek did the same thing to great success.

TV shouldnt be a 20 hour movie, it should be episodic, fun.

I think a show like Supernatural is absolutely amazing, they managed to capture that X-files formula and vibe and basically create a super comfy show you can drop in, watch, and tune out. Or marathon a whole season and catch up. It works as a show because of the amazing chemistry of the two main actors, it's every buddy movie rolled into one, the funny guy and the straight man, the tough guy and the emotional guy, you can explore this with so many angles.

Now, what is The Expanse about? It looks to me (remember I've only seen 1 episode and a half) like it tries to be a giant esemble cast in a complex universe with multiple storylines eventually intersecting. So like GoT in space without the budget to make it 100% right?

That just seems like lazy writing to me. I honestly blame Thomas Pynchon.
>>
>>79743363
>stop trying to be more than episodic schlock on CW!!!
>>
>>79743363
You described the first 4-5 episodes fairly accurately. After that the fat is basically cut and it's on a fairly straight and narrow course. It's not episodic but it's not as stupidly bloated as GoT by any means. The Noir dies with the detective.

Then please, enlighten me with your wisdom and superior tastes. Which ones of the currently running TV shows are actually worth watching? Because ive tried and dropped dozens of garbage shows over the last few years and only follow 4 series atm; Gomorra, Better Call Saul, GoT (which has been shit after S3) and The Expanse, which has been easy 8/10 so far.
>>
>>79743362
Miller is a cop, Amos is a fucking mechanic or what. I think he can judge the situation better
>>
>>79743412
i'll definitely give it a 2nd chance, i just need to be in the maximum mood for watching 5-6 episodes at once, because I need to power through when I watch a new show.

When I saw the drones it triggered me instantly because why the fuck would they have 2015-16 era drones in some futuristic space mining colony. Small things like that just make me internally reee and i lose all immersion.

>>
>>79743466
the Belt is a ghetto, it's the Detroit of the solar system in-universe. It's skipped in the show, but the little shuttle the main characters use to check out the distress beacon in the first episode was so derelict that it wasn't even capable of atmospheric flight, it had little to no thermal insulation and was basically nigger rigged to even fly. Small bits of exposition like that had to be skipped in the show for the sake of brevity, but it's not high tech at all, Ceres is just a shithole.

Why not? I still use pen and paper in the age of computers. Drones work very well and are very efficient, it is hard to imagine any future tech that improves it, except marginally. Maybe room temperature superconductors will make slightly more efficient motors, but atmospheric flight will still have the same principles.

It' pretty awesome how clearly defined and separate different factions and even areas are from each other, and they feel "real" because of it. And how they differ in motives. All of these help a lot to make it feel organic, in the sense that every reaction of faction or a character feels legitimate and understandable.

And Fred Johnson for example, started as a bit of a quiet talk guy that wouldn't take a lead and now in the latest episode he was a convincing leader.

It's these thigns that make me love it so.
>>
>>79746086
He'll be back, if they decide to follow the books accurately.
>>
>>79746155

Yes? I get it, Miller was great, but I enjoy the other characters as well. I appreciate what Holden's trying to do and his ridiculousness is endearing to me. Amos is fun, the negro chick is hot and competent. Basically the only one who makes me roll my eyes is the pilot, and he's merely occasionally annoying.

The rest of the supporting cast is great and I think a show with the reputations this is building will be able to attract more quality talent.

They get real SJW/Jewy after the second book.

Like they go out of their way just to kike it up. "Look here is a interracial lesbian space couple where the bull dyke is actually a priest who beats up wife beaters in her spare time goy! How progressive!"

Like I read the third book then looked up who actually wrote the book. Of course (((they))) did.

possibly but they're on the outside perimeter of the spin they'd have to be flying on a curved path

I'm interpretting it they lined up going in on a tangent and matched speed, locked when they intersected and got mechanically pulled into the rotation

if not, possibly the scenes could be out of order who knows but it's definitely something they considered but specifically wanted he shot of him falling ungracefully because he's a fish out of water so bent the rules a bit

We saw the spin but we didn't see the Rocinante moving relative to the spin, implying they were spinning along with the ring (despite seemingly not burning from the look of both Miller and the engines).

Plus it would be stupid for having docking arms literally catching ships instead of ships piloting to docking arms. It would put a lot of strain on both the ship and the arms, to say nothing of it screwing up the motion of the space station and the hab ring rotation. Space stations need to take extra effort to cancel out motion like that. That's why the International Space Station weight lifting rig for the crew had to be specially designed to not cause any torque on the station.

I'm willing to ignore small stuff like this, but I just wanted to be clear that it wasn't well thought out. They could have accomplished all their cinematic goals simply by showing the Rocinante starting a burn right before the docking arms start catching it, queuing Miller falling.

you're all retarded

miller falls on the floor of the roci, the floors of ship in the expanse are built like a skyscraper, only DE/ACCELERATION along the ships CENTER AXIS gives the ship "gravity".

The ship has already bled off "forward" speed (given by the ships main engine along the center axis). There is no ACCELERATION ALONG THE CENTER AXIS (i.e. no gravity). It just need to match the stations slow LATERAL MOVEMENT using its manoeuvring thrusters (i.e. not center axis). The ship does not experience "gravity" while matching lateral movement because the lateral acceleration generated to match the station is so small and for so little time it isn't even felt.

Once the ship is clamped the stations centrifugal force is imparted to the roci, and as the ship is facing the center of spin, that centrifugal force acts along the CENTRAL AXIS basically giving the ship "gravity".

The crew would normally all be belted into crash couches for any maneuver but its obvious the writers wanted show miller's ineptitude in space.

The station is spinning for a reason. Anything moving at that distance from th estation's central axis at that speed would experience something approaching 1g. The ship would therefore have to be burning at 1g to keep up with the rotation.

It's that or the Rocinante was moving in a straight line and then was caught by the station, which is not at all apparent given it was stationary relative to the spin of the station.

Think about it.

it's not that jarring, it's a pretty smooth motion.

If the ship was to match the curve of the spin it would need to be doing a constant outward as well as forward burn, and we can see from the outside shot that it's not doing that, it's just making minor adjustments to fine-tune its path

the station is large it would not be rotating that fast to be generataing 1g, its not a stretch to imagien the arms and ship can handle

the whole bod of the ship holds together in 20g in the new episode and the dock would obviously be reinforced

I suppose if the station was fuckhuge enough it wouldn't matter. They have mass moving around the station all the time within messing up the distribution tug of catching a ship and its mass throwing off the ring probably is fixable. I wonder if the ring has a rail system full of counterweights constantly moving around to keep the weight distribution of the ring even.

Regardless, It's still an oddly risky maneuver. If I were designing a station I would have them dock in the zero g central column and if they had to dock on the ring then I would have them match the acceleration of the ring such that there would be no risk of them missing and having to do it all over worse colliding with the ring and fucking up the docking arms.

Are you saying the station is spinning so that docking ships have to keep up with its "spin" so they have G before and during docking?

G is a measure of acceleration, not speed. As the rotational speed of the station is constant, and your speed is the same (i.e. constant, no acceleration) why would you feel any G?

>>79750002
thanks for taking what i said out of context, and did you not read

>while matching lateral movement because the lateral acceleration generated to match the station is so small and for so little time it isn't even felt.

acceleration is just the rate of change of velocity of an object with respect to time

but it doesn't even matter, because neither the station or the ship are accelerating after "matching" spin. They have different speeds, but the speeds aern't changing for either vessel.

I admit I did find the lesbo priest to be some pretty heavy handed "look how progressive we are" stuff but by no means does it ruin the story.

I guess it bugged my mostly just because they introduce stuff like polygamous families, like Holden has multiple parents, but they explain that it's something that came about largely due to birth restrictions and the difficulty of buying land on Earth and that's actually an interesting thought, it's not just like "lol this the future so obviously everybody is gay/trans/polygamous I mean come on" Alex even comments on Holden's family being weird to him.

But the lesbian priest was totally just them going "look how progressive we are!" in no way did it serve the story for her to be gay.

A) They are constantly burning to keep up with the spin of the ring to safely and easily dock.
B) They are going in a straight line and the docking clamps have to catch the ship.

Both are physically possible. However the Rosinante is stationary relative to the ring when we see the docking arms moving towards it. Furthermore it seems needlessly hairy having the ship only be able to dock for a split second before it passes the docking arms trying to catch it.

I mentioned it in a previous thread but apparently the actor was reading the first book just for fun when he was called in to audition. Once he had the role, he paid a shrink to read the novella about Amos' past and tell him how that'd translate into adult behavior and mindset.

Wes Chatham, I think is his name. He mentioned this in one of the podcasts about the show. Have to respect paying that much attention to a TV role in order to do it justice.

>>
>>79752694
That's pretty cool. I definitely think he's getting it down good. There was a post on reddit where a person did some psych analysis on Amos and Chatham retweeted it.

It was actually surprisingly in depth and reasonable too for armchair psychology of a fictional character. Basically said Amos is an autist with PTSD and I think that's a pretty good summary. He's very distant and doesn't necessarily enjoy violence but doesn't think anything of killing someone who threatens him or people he cares about. Survival of himself and people he likes are more important than any "moral" issue to him.

The ring is spinning. If the Rocinante is stationary relative to the ring then it's because it is doing a burn to keep up.

It's going to do more crazy stuff and much of it is not explained in the book, it's basically presented as "holy shit these aliens were so advanced this shit is like magic to us!"

By the 6th book humans have started to adapt things learned from alien stuff into their technology but it's all fairly basic stuff, they make a new stronger, lighter ceramic material built by studying the thing the goo is going to build and they genetically engineer some yeast that can photosynthesize high energy radiation from studying how the goo thrives on it the seemingly physics defying stuff remains beyond human understanding though at least thus far.

they do use some alien magic to defeat the bad guy of book 6 though they don't really understand how it works, they just figure out that it works. It was kinda anti climactic in the book but I think it'll be pretty cool on screen actually if the show lasts that long.

What?

space has no air resistance, once you've reached a certain speed you will stay at that speed unless something else acts on it, you don't need a burn to keep up. Your burn to match speed would already be finished well before the docking clamps engaged, so everything is in order.

Are you saying the manoeuvring thrusts are doing 1G?

Yes this is what he's not getting, once they get themselves stationary relative to the station they don't need to do anything to "keep up". They won't be under thrust anymore and thus 0 G, aside from the maneuvering thrusters but that's not going to be noticeable.

Objects don't just orbit nothing. If you want it to keep up with the SPINNING ring then there has to be thrust to keep up. You can't just say "I want to orbit that empty point in space" and then magically go from moving in a straight line to moving around that point.

You have to keep up with the spin of the station. You won't just magically spin along with it. The only think keeping the station from flying apart is the tension on the structure itself. If not for whatever cables reinforcement the station has it would fly apart. For the Rocinante to keep up with the spin it would either have to be attached to the spinning section of station or it would have to be burning to keep up.

The Rocinante wasn't orbitting the space station. The space station doesn't have nearly enough mass and if it did then it wouldn't need the spinning habitation ring.

>>79754968
If the Roci accelerated at 1 g then he would indeed simply fall to the floor, which is what happened to him. You have to remember that it's a flying tower, with the front being up to the crew. It's main engines are at the very bottom of the ship.

there is no guarantee that they will conform to our ideas of space and relativity either, it's very likely that our understanding of the universe would be blown apart

>>
>>79751919
Really ? Why ?
>>
>>79755611
>The idea that we would mine in the belt and ship it anywhere is stupid crap
Not really. Asteroids contain more valuable heavy metals than the Earth's or any planet's crust. All of the planets heavier materials sank to their cores billions of years ago. That's why we only find the really valuable stuff like gold in volcanic veins.
>>
>>79755666
? You can't say shit like that before we have any idea of what sort of resources there are in asteroids
>>
>>79755711
Yes I can say shit like that because it's simple physics and geology. The elements available to us are inarguably lighter than the elements ubiquitous to asteroids because Earth underwent a filtering of sorts, where all the heavier elements sank to the bottom of the Earth. That's why gold is so rare and why we will never run out of aluminum. Asteroids never underwent that so they hare necessarily full of heavier elements than Earth's crust is. Stuff like gold, silver, platinum, uranium all will be more prevalent in asteroids.

they contain lots of valuable metals m8, mining them is a very realistic prospect. Certainly better than mining Earth.
>>
>>79755832
Thats nonsense, vast quantities of shit has fallen to the earth, and there is plenty of movement around inside the earth too

There is enough supply to fill all demand for elements. Most of the earth surface hasn't been explored at all, plus you could mine much deeper if you wanted
>>
>>79755849
The main problem is those heavily invested in gold, silver, or the mining industry will do whatever it takes to make sure space mining never becomes a thing. If we go back to the gold standard then no one would allow space mining to happen. If we dicovered an asteroid with more gold than has ever been mined on Earth then the value of gold with plummet and fortunes would disappear overnight.

Except you're wrong. There is a tremendous demand for some metals, like gold, silver, and platinum. That's why they are so expensive.

Furthermore exponential growth means exponential demands for resources. I'm sure people thought petroleum was unlimited at one time too, and yet here we are needing to resort to more expensive oil shale, which itself won't last forever.

The ocean floor is also just as difficult if not more difficult to mine than space. Once space based operations are fueled and perhaps even built in space from space based resources it won't be expensive at all to mine asteroids. The growth of the industry will become exponential. Every mined asteroid will spawn five more mining operations.
>>
>>79755955
Its not so much about earth not having enough its just human nature to always want more. You think were just gonna stay here forever because earth is adequate?

We're gonna mine those asteroids m8 and we're gonna use those resources to expand beyond earth.

Yes earth has "enough" but since when are people ever satisfied with "enough".

>>
>>79756249
to be fair though doing it to explore the stars is different than doing it to have bigger office. Also mining the asteroids is better than mining the earth, they don't have ecosystems to get fucked up.
>>
New thread when?
>>
>>79756483
Isn't civilization sort of like a huge metaphorical office though? Both are just a person's/humanity's space to get shit done.

But yeah, there is nothing wrong with growth or never being completely satisfied. The video paints it negatively but that's only when it goes to far, not the growth itself but the mentality. The growth is self defeating if you grow one think like a parking lot into a rainforest and then you run out of air to breath.

Not much in space to ruin though.
