cinema because i like the movie talk i get with friends right after watching it
>>
I appreciate the effort put into the OP this time.

The independent cinema nearby has a disappointing set up so when I watch older movies I watch at home. I run an HDMI cable to my television or watch TCM when I catch a movie in time. For not having lots of money it's a good set up.

I went to see The Great Wall yesterday. First movie I'd seen in a theatre in seven years. Pretty entertaining, I thought. Sort of reminded me of the BPRD War on Frogs comics. I hope to see more movies theatrically in the near future, I've missed the theatrical experience.
>>
>>79617229

but wouldnt you rather have all that movie talk, in the comfort of one your friend's homes?

definitely at home w/ friends more than the cinema for me

Well, the boards are gone. Will you still use imdb for information and reviews?
>>
>>79618637
For information, obviously. Reviews? Frequently garbage, but there's value if it's just a bunch of them on a little seen film, strange autisms are there.
But most clicks on the site were because of the fucking boards. Here's hoping my experience was the same as many others and this dumb shit site takes a huge hit on numbers.

Yeah, I'm pretty upset and thinking of using tmdb more now. Really a shortsighted, horrendous decision considering there was nothing like them elsewhere and they didn't even keep an archive. I suppose that's what happens when you have private businesses as caretaker of things, they make decisions based on whether things are profitable and ax them if not. At least tmdb is non-profit.

I haven't seen it but von Sternberg rarely puts a foot wrong. I think the only films of his I've seen that I'm not overly fond of are Underworld and Dishonored, which was a little slow and I felt was a rehash of Morocco a better and more sensual film in a more interesting locale. >QOOT: Do you prefer watching movies in the cinema or at home and why?

If I had a private cinema that allowed me to bring in my own food and played movies I was actually interested in watching, then I would totally pick cinema. But modern theaters are shit with shitty movies and shittier overpriced junk food.

When I get my own house, the first thing I'm going to do is turn one of my rooms into a private home theater. One of my teachers had an amazing home theater in their basement.

There are some local theaters that only have one screen and don't show traditional movies by my house. I like going there a lot.

I'd say Letterboxd is nice for the ability to follow users with similar tastes and for the better interface than just notepad. But if you don't care about that, maybe try converting to an excel spreadsheet for better organizing. That's just nitpicking though.

Watched the trailer for Capitão Falcão, I'll check it out, seems funny.

References and influences made by industry vets is another entry point that leads me into several rabbit holes as well as well as film festival awards and lists and positive remarks made by classic directors and critics. Roger Ebert and Vincent Canby are vital sources as well as A.O. Scott, Richard Brody, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Emanuel Levy, Steve Crum, etc. You'll even find things simply in related on google or youtube. Just recently, I've been diving into Austrailian cinema.

The cinema, the bigger the screen the better. Also there's nothing quite like walking out of a theater and discussing how the movie was. /lbg/ what do you believe are the greatest art films ever made? Movies that push cinema's most important artistic value of depicting reality, history, and it's relationship with fiction and documentation?

This is a list I can come up with off the top of my head.

Intolerance, King of Kings, The Rules of the Game, Citizen Kane, Medium Cool, Husbands, Out 1, Scenes from a Marriage, The Last Movie, Nashville, Pulp Fiction, Boyhood.
>>
>>79646684
Sounds cheap to answer it here, but that's me. Excellent list, btw. Also, it's important to distinct between best and greatest.
>>
>>79646684
Almost none of those are "art films." Those were all mainstream films from big Hollywood studios or just films from foreign studios.
>>
>>79646782

This question arose to me after listening to Robert Altman's interview on the Dick Cavett Show in 1972 where he states "there has never been a true film made yet." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZpcVU_Ugvg

Robert Altman, I believe is the greatest director that has ever lived, as his techniques of improvisation, natural overlapping dialogue, and lingering camerawork resonate strongly with me in concerning the true definition of cinema. Reading from works by Andre Bazin and having talks with my father, who is an established documentary filmmaker, about why he loves making documentaries is cinema's relationship with history and reality.

My father bluntly puts it as "He doesn't care for fairy tales.", and that statement has resonated with me since. I, too, have peered and analyzed my particular response to certain films and found that I had some of the most profound responses to films depicting societal/interpersonal relationships, psychology, history, and manipulation of reality with fiction. Diving into film theory prosed by Andre Bazin, he too felt cinema's relationship with depicting and exposing reality was one of it's artistic strongsuits.
>>
>>79646868
When I list Pulp Fiction, I'm talking about it's self-reflexive postmodern relationship with genre cinema, pop culture, and audience.

I misconstrued. I'm not referring to an impression of reality, instead an exposition of reality. The reason cinema is so powerful as an artform is because what you are watching is real and manipulated by technique and camera.

>>79648189
>The purpose of art is to find Truth

What do you guys feel about adding It Happened One Night, Journey to Italy, Le Beaut Serge, and 400 Blows to this list?>>79646684

Focus is on realism and historical/societal/psychological/documentarian focus; adaptations dismissed for being connected with other medium; dismissal of "trash" genres; propoganda disconcerned due to affiliation with state or body of people rather than individual.
>>
>>79649063
Adding Nanook of the North, Napoleon, and Man With a Movie Camera as well
>>
>>79649063
I gotta ask, why Pulp Fiction? It's very much a genre picture, and hardly a documentary.
>>
>>79649585
It's self-awareness and postmodernism showing the relationship between pop culture, cinema, and the audience. A celebration and deconstruction of cinema. But if you disagree, feel free to contest, I'm not looking to close discussion.

Alright here's a revamped list of greatest art films following this criteria >>79649063 as well as counting innovation. Though, Badlands replacing Bonnie and Clyde for French New Wave-inspired biographical love on the run is for Malick's separation from French New Wave norms and impressionistic portrayal of real life events self-reflexively blending with James Dean pop culture legend.

Anybody can add if they feel to do so.

Intolerance, Nanook of the North, Napoleon, Man With a Movie Camera, King of Kings, The Gold Diggers of 1933, It Happened One Night, Redes, 39 Steps, Young Mr. Lincoln, The Rules of the Game, Citizen Kane, Journey to Italy, Le Beau Serge, 400 Blows, Dr. Strangelove, Andrei Rublev, The Graduate, Medium Cool, Husbands, Out 1, Scenes from a Marriage, The Last Movie, Badlands, Nashville, Real Life, Pulp Fiction, Boyhood

Me removing Bonnie and Clyde is not devaluing Arthur Penn though or the film in general because it is excellent and groundbreaking in its own right. Also, Arthur Penn is one of my favorite directors from the New Hollywood era. In retrospect, I believe his 1966 film the Chase would be suited for the list for being one of the first network narrative films (a script system seen often in Scorsese and 90's works), but it's mixing of Elia Kazan melodrama and French New Wave inspirings detracts it from applying fully to the criteria.
