What do you think of new competence?
>Recent New Competence films are, for me, stuff like La La Land, A Cure for Wellness and this [john wick 2], which seem designed as self-conscious "coherent" antitheses to the haphazard aesthetics that have proliferated in mainstream moviemaking. Yet they all lack that intangible something that would make them great, or even good. You can "see" them clearly, but there's little, between the lines, to really see.
>It's a term I came up with, and like any such grouping, it's more than a bit of a shallow catch-all. I'm more a believer that each movie is unique and creates its own specific analytical problems. But creating a grouping helps me organize some of my thoughts and feelings on the art of the moment, and hopefully go deeper, if not in writing, then in conversation or reflection.
>I also agree that craft itself can be meaning, and the craft here I think conjures a moral vacuum that rubs me the wrong way. The movie made me soul-sick, all the more so because of its arch pretensions to Buster Keaton-esque comedy, its thoughtless stereotyping of characters and character actors, and its numbingly pie-eyed adoration of firearms. At this moment, I'm just not able to find much fun in treating an AR rifle like a fine wine.
>>79418410
I think that person should kill himself asap
>>79418410
it's a useful grouping, but far too dependent on personal opinion to be meaningful for others

I'm sorry to say The Avengers isn't a good movie; it's a GREAT MOVIE!!!! It's not only the best team superhero movie ever made, but it may just be the best comic book adaption made period!
The Avengers is the culmination of what began in Iron Man; and continued through The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America. It was only a few years ago that my son and I had just finished watching Iron Man and as the credits were ending, Samuel L. Jackson appeared on screen as Nick Fury and spoke to Tony Stark about joining Avengers Initiativein that short scene, the framework for potentially the greatest comic book movie of all-time had begun! Director Joss Whedon, most known for the T.V. series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, takes the foundation that was built in the prior films and brings together the greatest team of superheroes in film history, The Avengers: Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) as "assembled" by Nick Fury. Cont.
Whedon's scripts usually include clever banter, gripping action sequences and an air of mystery and The Avengers is no different. Whedon has an utter love for comic books, and it is proudly put on display in The Avengers. The cast does a great job of bringing these iconic characters to life, beginning with Robert Downey Jr. Unlike Iron Man 2, in which Downey seemed to skate through scene after scene, Downey plays Stark almost effortlessly, delivering his lines with relative ease allowing his charisma, charm and smugness to shine through; Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark! Chris Evans' solidifies himself in the role of Captain America. He was very good in his solo film, but truly owns the role standing alongside Iron Man and Thor. Chris Hemsworth's Asgardian god Thor has some incredible battle scenes and indirectly provides one of the film's most funny moments. After being seriously underutilized in Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is provided a back-story, which helps in developing the character and provides an opportunity to prove she is much more than just a pretty face; she's as dangerous psychologically as she is physically. I could envision myself enjoying a beat-down at the hands (and feet) of Black Widow. Cont.
The character I was most concerned about being given little story and the least amount of screen time was Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye; happily, he's not left by the wayside and does a more than admirable job of developing the character. Hawkeye stands alongside Robin Hood and Katniss Everdene (The Hunger Games) as the best archers to grace the silver screen. I'd like to see more of him in a film of his own. Mark Ruffalo, the most recent choice to play Hulk, is far better suited to the role than Eric Bana (The Hulk) and Ed Norton Jr (The Incredible Hulk). Ruffalo looks more the part of the nerdy scientist Banner and plays the part without looking angry in every scene. In The Avengers, the Hulk is at his most impressive, both in his on-screen transformation and the violence he displays when the opportunity calls for him to "hulk out". If any character appeared to stand out a little bit more than the others, for me it was the Hulk. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is finally more than just the guy making surprise appearances. Fury is finally able to stretch his legs some, and Jackson slides quite easily into the role. Clark Gregg's Agent Caulson returns, and Cobie Smulders makes her Marvel films debut as Agent Maria Hill, and she is a welcome addition.
The film's main villain is Thor's adopted-brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston. You would think the part would be a difficult one to play being opposite such powerful personalities and strong characters, but Hiddleston does a fantastic job; the performance should not go unnoticed, because it's one of the strong points of the film. Loki is not a villain without purpose and Hiddleston comes across as a devious mastermind without being cartoonish. At a running-time of 2+ hours, The Avengers is well paced and time flies by. The effects are top-notch, the acting is very good, and the script drives the movie elevating its strengths. For viewers that may not have seen any of the other films (and if so, why not!?!?), we're provided just enough information to bring everyone up to speed without feeling overdone. Whedon provides more than just a standard comic book film, but a story with reason that's backed up with incredible action and humor. Although the film is filled with larger than life characters, none are short changed; each character is given at least one great scene to work with, and the opportunities don't go to waste. Cont.
The film's finale provides a deafening crescendo of action that is breathtaking. As usual with Marvel films, be sure to stay around for the post credit sequence, which provides a surprising reveal. I went into The Avengers with unfairly high expectations, due to all of those that were involved, as well as the films that came before it. After viewing the initial trailers and not being blown away, I had set myself up for disappointment. It was only a matter of minutes after the film started that I was put at ease, and just minutes later when my expectations were blown away. I never imagined that it was possible to put onto the screen, what I was watching. I'm happy that Marvel had the sense to keep these properties to themselves and to move forward with these characters in the manner in which they did. Marvel Studios and Disney are going to make a boatload of money off this film, and deservedly so; because there's never been another movie made of its caliber. Grade: A+

Richard Donner's Superman will always be the best superhero movie.
VERISIMILITUDE!
>>79433811
The Dark Knight, actually.
Only contrarians disagree
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the third film in Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (after last year's Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World).
Compared with the mighty giant green monster, the hammer wielding Norse thunder god or the 'genius, philanthropist, billionaire, playboy' armor man, the Captain was never quite as appealing as the rest of the 'Unusuals'. Steve Rogers is portrayed as an old-fashioned, straightforward, honest, courageous, sincere, patriotic superhero. This makes him a less-interesting, boring character. Moreover, as Tony Stark said it, "Everything special about you came out of a bottle!"
Most film-goers would know that Marvel films are famous for its bright, fun and not-so-serious approach to its storytelling, together with some catchy, witty dialogues. This film is a game changer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time around, Marvel decided to take a different approach on things: To make a Captain America sequel with a more serious, darker plot development and more face-to-face close-range hand combat fights. What should have been a typical superhero film, now becomes a conspiracy-espionage thriller.cont.
Two years after the events that happened in New York city, the Captain still struggles with adjusting himself to the modern world, with no apparent social life or girl friend, which is why Natasha/Black Widow tries to introduce or recommend him some cute girls in S.H.I.E.L.D. for him to date with. He is shocked when he learns that the very governmental organisation he is working for is not what it seems to be, as the Cap said in the trailer, "This isn't freedom. This is fear". Soon, he finds himself entangled in a conspiracy that puts millions of innocent lives at risk.
The film comes with excellent, fast-paced action choreography. Although the cinematography is a bit dodgy due to the shaky-cam techniques used for depicting the chaotic moments, the fight scenes between the Winter Soldier and the Captain is fantastic and serves as one of the film's highlights. The audience finally gets to see how the Captain's shield is utilised effectively in both offensive and defensive combat situations. It also good to see again how Natasha kicks ass in the film.cont.

I love you all and also I love too watch films

Exposition dumps does not equal good dialogue, and neither does it equal good cinema.
Shark repellent>why so serious
All actors delivered a pretty decent performance in the film. Once again, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson both proved that they fit their roles well, adding more depth to the characters they portray in the film. Sam Wilson/Falcon is a welcome addition to the Marvel franchise and hopefully he will appear again in the Avengers sequel. Unfortunately, despite the film's title, the winter soldier is not a complex villain and doesn't appear much in the film. It's such a shame to just show him as a formidable physical fighter who's capable of challenging the Captain.
The film is well-scripted, filled with suspense while highlighting some important socio-political issues such as government surveillance and control in its storytelling. Although the twists in the film is predictable and fairly easy to guess, the sequel is a marked improvement compared to its predecessor, Captain America: The First Avenger. The story unfolds gradually and comes with huge, surprising developments by the end of the film.

The best Superman comics are much better than best Superman films.
Random thoughts for Valentine's day, 2004. Today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap.
If only I could meet someone new. I guess my chances of that happening are somewhat diminished, seeing that I'm incapable of making eye contact with a woman I don't know. Maybe I should get back together with Naomi. She was nice. Nice is good. She loved me. Why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the least bit of attention?
The only Valentine's Day cards I get are from my mother. How pathetic is that, huh?

Superhero stories are at their worse when they're taken so seriously. Primarily because you're dealing with flying men in tights. Richard Donner and Sam raimi's superhero films worked so well because they nail perfect balance of character drama, camp, and verisimilitude (cinema).
I am drawn back to when this movie was first announced and how I despised the notion of a Batman V Superman film a la Freddy vs Jason, Alien vs Predator and so on.
It all seemed like a huge gimmick to me and I expected the worst for this movie. Fast forward a couple years, I am sitting down at a private screening, the lights go down and the movies opens up. The opening sequence was not what I expected but shows Snyder's visual creativity in a similar manner as he did with the opening sequence of Watchmen.
We are hearkened to the Black Zero Event, only we see it from Bruce Wayne's perspective as shown in some of the trailers. I love that Snyder uses Bruce's as the eyes of the audience to get an outside perspective of the surrounding madness and destruction, and he does it very effectively. You are mad at these beings, you feel the terror, the confusion the anger for them bringing there war here, it plays out with spectacle and sadness. Cont.
>>79434159
How can it be the best superhero movie when it's one of the worst movies of all time?
The overall story is well woven and much better than MOS, you can definitely breathe a sigh of relief in that Terrio does a great job of crafting this all together. The movie is a visual tour de force as we have come to expect with Snyder but let me just say that his directing has also improved. For those who moaned about the shaky cam and muted colors, they will be pleased. Performance wise. EVERYONE does an outstanding job, the standouts to me were Affleck, Eissenberg and Gadot. I was not on the Ben, Gal, Jesse hate wagon, though I found Eissenberg's casting questionable but I felt he had shown that he has some capable range of pulling it off. Affleck is Bruce Wayne, Affleck is Batman, talk about casting redemption. Similar to Reynolds, GL>Deadpool. Affleck should no longer be bogged with complaints about Daredevil.
For those that hated on Gadot, suck it, she owns the role in every way possible, she really has stepped up her acting game as well. The woman has presence as Diana, grace and beauty and as Wonder Woman, she is truly a Goddess. People were moaning about Gail's size, forget that nonsense, she proves she does not need bulking muscles to be a warrior and her fight scenes are exceptional, makes Faora look like she was waltzing. Eissenberg, well well well. Let me first say I thought the best versions of Luthor were from the Lois and Clark and Smalville TV shows but Jesse brings something totally new to the game. Cont.

Jesse plays his Luthor like a true devil. He is deceiving, manipulative, conniving, that line the Devil will do it, he is referring to himself to me. I could not help but see him like a Lucifer in his role and wondered if Jesse kind of based playing his character that way. Everyone else support wise was absolutely great. I do not want to write a long report of praises so let me see if I can cap off before getting on my flight. The fight set up was a little weak but boy the pay off was spectacular. Cavill I feel needs to step up a little more, granted he was wonderful but he was out shined. He needs to get beyond that distraught expression that he likes to use because he does it to death in this and I found that annoying.
The other member intro's were great and will have you all pumped for the JLA, the Knightmare scene was horrific and impactful and made me smile like a little geek. The final fight was amazing. Never in a CBM have we seen anything like it, yes I said it NEVER and lastly, I will say the movie does end on a heart wrenching note but a wink in the end.

My only problems with BVS were: the horrid Justice League tie ins. They did not need to be there. Also the Doomsday fight, which seemed tacked on because all superhero movies at this point seemingly have to exist within this framework where there's a big fight at the end.
I thought Affleck was excellent as Batman, I thought that other guy was excellent as Superman. The chick who played Wonder Woman was also great. I think it's an exceptionally interesting take on a series of familiar names. If it hadn't have fallen into similar superhero tropes it would have been so much better. It's certainly not a film for general audiences that much is clear. That being said, I'd rather watch BVS again than any of the Marvel movies released to date. I'm not a comic book guy, so this isn't me sticking to a "side" I don't think I've ever held a comic book let alone read one. It saddens me that there's probably going to be a significant change in direction and tone moving forward. I seriously enjoy the darker, more nihilistic take.

/lbg/ can we seriously have a discussion about why plebs equate ultraseriousness with being good or better? You see it as a shift in the Hollywood blockbuster machine and prestige television now.
And anytime humor is allowed, it's merely quips, no visual or situational gags that play with momentum or pacing. I'd chock it up to lack of improv and contemporary acting style today, there's something about it I very much dislike.

This movie changed my life. Right up there with American Psycho! There is so much symbolism in this movie I had to watch it thrice just understand it fully!
When the one baby said "Don't have a cow Basil" I thought wow, a reference to The Last Temptation of Christ" Humor, intense plot, this babies got it all! All I can say is WOW! If you like intense psychological thrillers than this movie is for you! The switching of the twins was a total plot twist! I had no idea that would happen! I even found myself mistaking the two Sly and Whit! Christopher Llyods best performance since the powerful Angels in the Outfield! Kathleen Turner delivers a moving and convincing performance as a tough woman trying to succeed in a mans world. You go girl!

Did anyone ever tell you sarcasm is the lowest form of wit?
It is so unjust to see most critics defame a great movie like super babies: Baby Geniuses 2. Contrary to the numerous unfair comments made by critics, this movie is interesting and highly recommended for /tv/.
Plot of Super babies:
Following on from the plot of the last movie, four babies can communicate with each other using 'baby talk', and have knowledge of many secrets. The baby geniuses become involved in a scheme by media mogul Bill Biscane (Jon Voight), later revealed to be known as Kane, who kidnaps children everywhere. Helping the geniuses is a legendary superbaby named Kahuna (he became powerful due to drinking a special chemical, much to the envy of his brother Kane), who stops Biscane's plots and saves children from being kidnapped by Biscane and his minions. He joins up with several other babies in an attempt to stop Biscane, who intends to use a state-of-the-art satellite system to control the world's population by brainwashing them and forcing people to not be active and watch TV the rest of their lives
Honestly All Baby Geniuses Sequels Deserve Seeing Because They Are Made By Professionals and not Amateurs.
(Baby Geniuses and the Mystery of the Crown Jewels) is a Mysterious Film I recommend for every family and every child all over the world who want to see genius infants fighting Evil with their Super mind .
The movie just like all the previous Sequels Has A Didactic Theme For Every Kid " If You Sow The Good ,you'll Reap The Good Later.Whereas if you Sow Evil, you'll Reap Evil".
The reason why I loved this movie is because it has all the excellent elements in it:Humor,Kids' Innocence,Adventure,Great Visual Effects,Cute,Cuddly And Genius Babies Who Are Irresistibly Strong and Smart that you can't help but love them.
When Evil Baby, "BIG BABY" teams up with the even bigger super-criminal Moriarity (Jon Voight); the Baby Geniuses, an elite team of talking baby detectives are on the case!
Join them on a journey of espionage as they follow the mysterious clues, which will lead them to discover the secrets hidden deep within the Pyramids of Egypt, in this hilarious action-packed sequel to Baby Geniuses.
Big Baby and his father are conspiring once again and this time they take the treasures from the world that are associated with elements of the cosmos such as the Statue of Ra (representing the Sun) and other items that will allow them to travel into space. The amazing Baby Geniuses team get ready to arrest the criminals and return the objects. Once again these cute baby geniuses try to analyze the facts and investigate just like true detectives . Although most adults cannot understand these superb babies, there are a few that can help the baby squad analyze the information that the kids get to help solve the crimes.
just like the prequels, this is a lovely family movie that is entertaining and funny. The movie has many odd characters which add mystery to the film.

saikol you're a paranoid dumbfuck
I enjoyed this movie and found it fantastic. Unfortunately these days massive advertisements could make a bad movie sounds great and the main problem with this fantastic movie is that it is not promoted by a Giant Film Company.
The story of smart babies fighting evil people is something significant today. Most children have been seeing all kinds of evil from : abuse, neglect, poverty, war, violence and indifference from one side of parents. Honestly, I really liked all the sequels of Baby Geniuses and I don't know why critics have to be extremely harsh in their criticism. Please let the children themselves decide if this movie is bad or good. All I know is that there is no violence in this film nor there is any rebellious children against their parents. It is a sweet comedy-adventure movie that deserves to be watched and appreciated.

It's fun to read Stevens make a case for Silent Night, Deadly Night III: Better Watch Out! as a feminist film while never bringing up how poor it actually is as a movie.
I think this movie is fun. Martin Larence is always funny and clever. Even if some people think is "anoying". The plot is very simplistic, but COME ON!, it isn't Matrix!
Of course is never gonna be a bomb like Star Wars or Matrix, but you can have a great movie night by adding this movie to the list. Black knight plus popcorn and a nice sit and you will have a great night. end. i cannot write less than 10 lines so i will fill the next with some funny scenes of the movie. My favorite scene is hen they dance "dance to the music" he he he the royal choir cant follow the lead! is so funny, then he sings "... my horn blow sitting there on the throne ..." and the royal welcomer do the music very sweet. I never get tired of seeing this movie. I can watch it over and over again.Martin Lawrence in Bad Boy and others movies acts just like in this one hilarious and clever. BTW if you have nothing good to say about something don't say anything at all.
