Is that just a regular destroyer on the top left, because that looks way bigger than it's supposed to me
>>
Can someone explain the overall plot of this show? I get who the main characters are and Fred Johnson, they talk about him enough.

It's the whole thing between the Martians and Earth(I guess?). The political scenes go way over my head.

So someone set loose an alien virus on Eros to trigger a war between Mars and Earth? And the reason for that is still a mystery, is that right?

I'm lost about 50% of the time, but I still like the show.

Looks like the USN's current Arleigh-Burke class of guided missile destroyer - which are 155m.

Here's a recap:

Some weird alien substance is discovered on Phoebe station (which is at least partly owned by Earth corporations but I don't know if Mars has any rights on it) which fucks people up and has the potential to be used as a bio-weapon. Some corporate asshole (Julie's dad from Lost) learns about it and wants to keep the substance for himself to experience upon. So he torches all the bodies and evidence on the station.

Martians learn that the station is now abandoned (how? no clue) and send their battleship Donnager to investigate. Shortly after Donnager completes the investigation and begins their return to Mars, they get this SOS from Holden and co. trying to survive in that emergency shuttle. You know how that ends.

Julie's dad has also some inside people in the UN pulling strings for him, the Indian lady later becomes aware that something is going on under the table but she doesn't yet know exactly what. He'd rather start a war between Earth and Mars to led people away from his experiments with the alien substance

Fred is just an asshole who for some reason waited months before responding to Julie's emergency message. His official reasoning was that he needed a gunship before he could do anything hence cooperating with Holden and his new Martian frigate but that's doesn't make any fucking sense to me

Dawes is another asshole who'd rather sweep this whole Scopuli business under the rug because it failed massively and would cost him politically and acts like none of it happened

How the alien thing ended up in the Solar System is not known. It's explained that Phoebe was caught back in the day by the Solar System's gravity. That scientist asshole speculated that it might have been intentionally sent by aliens but no one knows for sure yet

As you can see there's some bits that are left unanswered for me too, I blame the screenwriter

My brother was stationed on an aircraft carrier once, he said it was literally like a giant floating city. Barbershops, restaurants, laundromats, gyms, bookshops, literally dozens of different little stores to buy any sundries you need.
On paper it sounds like a great place to live, though he said the worst part about it were the bathrooms.
Out of all the money he saw government had spend on everything, I guess the toilet paper was still one ply, and they were all chemical based, so it was like a portapotty, except it got used by hundreds of people a day.
I'd still like to visit one someday.

Event Horizon is fantasy garbage that simply got by on triggering Christians.

While I'm at it, here a few things I'd like to know the answers about if anyone can - potential spoilers ahead

How the hell Earth does not know that something took place on Phoebe? Why wouldn't they confirm it with whoever owns the station back on Earth? And how does Mars know that something happened in Phoebe anyway

Out of all those new high tech ships out there, was it only Anubis which recovered the samples?

How did Fred Johnson manage to intercept the message from Julie to Dawes, and what kept him from responding immediately if he deemed it so important

Now that I think about it, all the events of the season 1 might be taking place in a very short amount of time - Fred might have just gotten the message from Julie before he contacted the Cant-Donnager survivors with the Martian gunship. Show gives the impression that there are weeks behind all the stuff happenning though. I guess someone will now call me a stupid retard and explain that it was part of the twist at the end of season 1

>How the hell Earth does not know that something took place on Phoebe? Why wouldn't they confirm it with whoever owns the station back on Earth? And how does Mars know that something happened in Phoebe anyway
Phoebe station technically belongs to Mars, with Protogen (the company investigating the Protomolecule) hiring it out. Protogen finds the protomolecule, tests it on Phoebe's general population, and then burns the facility whilst taking the protomolecule with them. The Donnager is dispatched to investigate why the station went dark and finds that someone destroyed it

Uh, no? Not that I have anything against Gravity, but Expanse isn't that, it is legit sci fi that takes place in our solar system. Gravity was named well, because it was about gravity, in particular, Earths gravitation field. It did a good job in that respect. Annoying that they had to tie the whole thing to feminism/reproduction though. The whole loner/cold vs family/warmth shit.

Also all of the suits used on mars are meant to be painted in a washed out red camo to make them blend in better with the terrain. She's really fucking annoying in the books too.

His reasoning is that people like Dresden(the guy he shot) always get away with murder. He was even persuading Johnson to let him on his side to continue his work. Which was murder. And Miller is a Belter. For a Belter, if someone is endangering the life of others on the ship/station they get spaced out, no trials, no bullshit.

Richard K Morgan's Altered Carbon will be going into production soon: cyberpunk, mind & personality state digital recordings, bodies rented out as 'sleeves', immortal rich a-holes, future combat, spycraft, virtual torture sessions.

Not one bit of all that will make it to the screen unaltered (pun intended) but it oughta be a huge glorious mess.

>Fred is just an asshole who for some reason waited months before responding to Julie's emergency message

No. Space is big. It takes weeks to travel between locations in this series. A quick response to anything is impossible, especially a rescue mission.

Ships are fast in this but they spend half the journey slowing down. This is why it takes weeks to get anywhere. The TV series edits it for time.

On a 3 week flight between asteroid bases they fly forward for 1.5 weeks and at the halfway point they cut thrust, flip the ship 180, and engage full thrust again to slow down for 1.5 weeks. They can fly faster but the strain on the crew is severe and if they stop suddenly they kill the crew.
>>
>>79133252
If I remember correctly, they state somewhere in the books that the furthest ship ever launched is the one outfitted with the prototype of the drive all the ships currently use

From the wiki :
>After finishing his design, Epstein outfitted his private three-man yacht with the Epstein drive and turned it on, launching it out into the Sol system at a marginal percentage of the speed of light. He was, however, unable to turn the engine off, and never returned. His ship accelerated for 37 hours at an unknown rate above 7 g before his fuel supply ran out and ended up at about 5% the speed of light. Solomon himself died from the high acceleration within minutes.
>>
>>79133388
I don't know about The Expanse universe but in reality a ship that accelerates an decelerates at one g could reach Mars in mere days.

Nothing wrong with Anwar's texan accent. It's set a couple of hundred years from now so a current day texas drawl wouldn't sound right. And let's face it - It's not like a texan voice sounds ok now, let alone in some fictional future.

The scene where they race to phoebe in last episode triggers me a lot

If earth and mars ships "race" toward the rock, at that distance they would have flipped and would be decelerating hard, not accelerating towards it, only to crash into it cause they can't brake

Actually the scene would be much more dramatic if it was written with correct orbital mechanics. You could have the two captain racing by maintaining their speed without decelerating enough, with one of them then daring to do an very high g burn next to the rock, risking ship and crew to be there first, while the other choose to fire missile to not let the first guy win

>Martians learn that the station is now abandoned (how? no clue) and send their battleship Donnager to investigate.

They didn't learn about it, they just got mobilized to the vicinity after Holden blamed Mars for destroying the Cantebury, his original ship, th

>Fred is just an asshole who for some reason waited months before responding to Julie's emergency message. His official reasoning was that he needed a gunship before he could do anything hence cooperating with Holden and his new Martian frigate but that's doesn't make any fucking sense to me

Johnson has no fucking clue of what happened. Trying to be the leader of the OPA is like trying to herd kittens, except the kittens have delusions of mad max WAR BOYS in SPACE

>How the alien thing ended up in the Solar System is not known. It's explained that Phoebe was caught back in the day by the Solar System's gravity. That scientist asshole speculated that it might have been intentionally sent by aliens but no one knows for sure yet

Yeah that's a spoiler

>>
>>79121787

>How did Fred Johnson manage to intercept the message from Julie to Dawes, and what kept him from responding immediately if he deemed it so important

Dawes and Fred are kind of frenemies. They're both OPA, just not necessarily the same tribe of OPA at any given time. Some interlap sometimes happens

Dawes controls Dawes station, Johnson controls Tycho

>Now that I think about it, all the events of the season 1 might be taking place in a very short amount of time

3) Taking this psychopath's machinations out of the table before he got his chance to get his grubby little fingers all over the politics of the belt and make a faustian deal

People like Amos, Miller, or Clarissa fulfill rolls of Darwin Award distributors in a world such as that of Expanse

>>
>>79143881
I believe the intention was to hard burn to Phoebe, dump off drop pods full of troops, and THEN turn around, decelerate, and come back for their people once the place had been turned inside-out and investigated/purged. When it became evident that Nathan Hale was going to beat Scirocco, the Martians blew the station up rather than allow the Earthers to drop troops and claim it for themselves because missiles outrun ships.

Even then you kind of need to rendezvous with the rock, dropping pods at a relative speed of several hundreds kilometers per second won't really help. in the show these pods don't have fusion drives, can't really decelerate and even if they did, you need enough time to do so
Let's say that they were burning at 3 g for 2 days, you would still need 12 hours at 12g to stop, or 4 hours at very unsurvivable 36g...

Basically, he wants to stop operation paperclip before it can even begin because he knows that if he doesn't act, he knows that Dresden will cut a deal with Fred or other leader types because his whole thing is cutting deals like that and he has the money, influence and secret technology to do deals with any side, no matter how bad his crimes.

It does a decent job of doing what her book version did with swearing. She tries to sound more macho than the men around her so that they won't notice that she's actually pretty soft (compared to the psychos she works with).

All the men at her level of politics are like 'a ship full of children is in the way of our strike? nuke 'em both' She's all 'zero civilian casualties'. But she has to find ways to make it sound like she's just being professional and shit.

But scaring you by pulling your skin off is still human-centric. Why would lovecraftian horrors care about scaring humans?

Do you torture ants to elicit reactions from other ants? You don't even know what kind of things ants react to.

Torturing humans is a distinctly human thing to do.

It's one reason why Event Horizon was garbage, it could have been set on earth in say, a school. And instead of a fancy hyperspace drive, just have used sex education. It would be the same story.
