WTF is going on at IMDb?

Why are they suddenly shutting down their message boards?

Ive been utilizing these boards for probably close to 15 years, if not longer- since I was in Middle School. Sad to see them go.

Does anybody know just what exactly happened to force them to shut down?
>>
so you're like 30? and still on 4chan?

lol
>>
>>79076149
I think you want /b/.

/tv/ is generally the older people, granted a lot of them are pedos but they're still older.
>>
It's absurd, Ive got a good following going there and have been honing my craft for years. If /tv/ is al I'm left with that sucks.
>>
>>79076135

That'a shame. There was some fucking gold on there.
>>
>>79076149
not op, but I'm 35. 4chan is fun.
>>

Theres a lot more to 4chan than just anime and jailbait pics ya know?
>>

>Why are they suddenly shutting down their message boards?
>Does anybody know just what exactly happened to force them to shut down?
This didn't just suddenly just happen. They've been using getsatisfaction.com/imdb for a while, and have been waiting to build up so they could do the final push and throw out the discussion boards altogether. I guess the reason is that they're sick of the trolls and all the negative shit, and want to wash their hands of it. They don't want to be responsible for it. I kind of agree with them, it is impossible to moderate the place. However, even though it was very shit it had its moments and once in a while a good thread popped up. If there were no financial problems then I don't agree with shutting it down.
>>
>>79076296
>>79076284
>>79076164
This.
I only browser /tv/ and /pol/ and sometimes /wsg/. They got some top-tier threads
>>
>>79076363
Same here, plus /fit/. All mature boards.
>>
>>79076430
Well. Half of /tv/ is unfunny memes but sometimes they got some good threads.
>>
>>79076363
i also check r9k for decent general discussion. The great thing about this site is tha tyou can find some really interesting, informed people in just about everything thread if it stays up long enough. there really isn't anything like it.
>>
Anyone got the comic where the grandpa is asked about what 4chan is and he shows them an old Windows computer?

>>79076149
You'll be here forever lad. There is no other place to go.
>>
complaints from studios that negative messages were flooding the film boards and affecting sales since some people were reading those instead of professional reviews that are generally positive
>>

this actually seems plausible. Any sauce?
>>
>>79076563
I call bullshit as IMDb's reviews are total shit.

A: No, you fucking Nazi scum
>>
>>79076303
IMDb boards were actually great for a long time. Probably around 2010 or so with the rise of Reddit and social media it went downhill. Still though, they were very useful for gathering the opinions of average joe schmoes on what was right or wrong with a particular movie, or just ask very specific questions in regards to a plot point or scene in a movie- things that might not typically make it to an official review or are too specific to deserve their own thread on a general message board such as /tv/. Not to mention the discussions on specific actors, directors and writers. Made for great discussion if you really loved (or hated) a specific movie, even with all the trolls and shitposters.
>>
>>79076616
no source for that, but an actual admin posted on the contributor help board (and if was mysteriously deleted...) and said
>The reason IMDb is getting rid of the message boards is simple: they can't be monetised. If IMDb could make money out of the boards, they'd be staying, but there's no cash in it for them, so they're getting axed. The sell-outs who run IMDb will have looked at the 'metrics' (a risible corporate buzzword the Data Team loves so much) and decided that traffic is not high enough for them to make any real money.
>>
>>79076135
I used to go there starting in like 2002. it was the only place I could discuss movies before /tv/

Politics aside, the only people who really post there now are middle aged men

people don't bother with the user reviews, it's the message boards where free discussion and rumors happen. this is a big no-no in 2017, of course, :^)

IMDB is controlled by amazon, which now produces movies and shows. they don't want the possibility of any sort of interaction or discourse allowed because that would mean the chance of negative talk :^)

so now maybe 5% of ppl will go to the highly policed and general Reddit movie board, and everybody else will simply fuck off with no more discussion to be had

a win-win for Hollywood

also they are removing the boards just before the most politicized and bullshitty oscars ever, THANK GOD AM I RIGHT NOW THE TRUMPKINS HAVE NOWHERE TO SPEW THEIR HATEFUL VENOM

>>
>>79076726
Fuck man, this is becoming a slippery slope. People really are trying to crack down on free speech and dissenting opinions. I can see it starting small with bullshit CNN comments section or IMDb message boards, but possibly slowly snowballing into something massive later on down the road.

Spooky stuff.

They will but with message boards you get the opinions of dozens of people in one thread that allows you to get a general consensus. With official user reviews or lists, you get one person who may or may not have a bias- or even just shit taste.

I can't believe this shit. I've been using imdb for 11 years and I think with this retarded change there is zero reason to use the site anymore.

The ratings have been literal shit for years due to hyperinflation of user scores it's basically as bad as RT. The only way to see any honest discussion on the movies is from the message board. What a travesty.

I'm still sad that they have enough staff now to fix bio's. I remember when William Zabka had a bio that read;

Or when you looked up pedo movies and checked the comments. Goddamn.

I literally forget my age from time to time. Not joking. Not a memory hole. After like 28 or so I just stopped caring about birthdays or keeping track. Thirty was big because people kept telling me.

I'm 35. I googled it.

Shit just blurs and fades. It's like when you write down 2016 on documents when it's 2017.

Nothing.

Movie companies (companies in general) are paying big bucks to remove public, anonymous discussion areas because it hurts their bottom line. If I can just go online and say how shitty Sony Pictures' newest big-budget dud is, and elaborate on why, they might just lose a couple of ticket sales. If I can hop on Amazon and say that the product I bought that broke on the first day broke because it was probably cheaply constructed in a sweatshop, the next person who views it might not buy it.

BUT if I can only voice my opinions on a website that displays my real name and location, I may be more hesitant. And if comments have to be approved before posting, they'll never go out.

Corporate entities have backed big pushes to delegalize online anonymity entirely for this reason- if everyone you see on the entire internet is a paid shill you're probably going to be a lot more careless with your money- and they always fail due to inherent conflict with various legalities and laws throughout the world (the First Amendment in America probably being one of the bigger ones). Since the rise of social media, and the full corporate embrace of web 2.0, corporate powers finally have the ability to just cut out the middleman and eliminate anonymity themselves.

And don't get me fucking started on copyright. Look at the image I just posted FFS. In five years we probably won't be able to be posting ANY images/videos of any copyrighted material anywhere without it being removed by entertainment industry employees.

The Amateur Index was when the adult studios moved in with multiple girls set up as a true amateur and some who are sharing on the site she's using at the time.

Now we can get full HD videos and girls offering it on cam sites for free

On why "comment sections" are going away, from elsewhere:
>When an egg or frog or mygaydadrapedme69 can engage a vaguely leftist celebrity moron or media whore and clown them for thousands of other accounts it shakes them and they don't like it. Demonstrations to Chris Cuomo that he's a talentless nepot of mediocre intelligence isn't the sort of thing he's going to like, especially when he can't leverage his status against an egg that tore apart some inanity that he spewed. Literally no one in his daily life engages in that sort of backtalk to him, and here he is taking it from some faceless, anonymous entity under the nome de plume Lew Stoulles who probably doesn't even live in New York. It's important that they believe that they deserve their stations - the idea that there are scores of more intelligent people on the outside who aren't buying their horseshit is scary and unsettling.
>They're used to controlled opposition and edits so Jon Leibowitz can do a stupid face and make the trained seals bark. Speaking TRUTH TO POWER is satirizing a caricature of rural Appalachians for the 9,000th time, not tweeting at POTUS that he's an autocratic asshole. Marshaling pressure to silence real opposition or excluding it from the conversation is the conditioned response but twitter made that practically impossible.
Cultural elites absolutely hate that rubes can talk back to them, so the arenas to do so must under the pretense of "toxicity" or "harassment" be either removed or turned into sanitized playpens where you're kept in line by the threat of being doxxed and having your career destroyed

It's been really shit for a few years now but it's still kind of sad for people who grew up posting on there. Because at one time, it wasn't as bad. I remember someone recommending me a bunch of crazy asian movies when I was younger that I would've never found otherwise.
>>
>>79078165
Gonna go browse the Chiaki Kuriyama boards right now for one last time. Havent been in about 14 years, since Kill Bill first came out. I used to post so many fantasies about her on that board lol.

The first girl that ever got me into Asian chicks, at the age of 13. So sad, she was slated to blow up big in America too after Kill Bill, not sure what happened.

RIP IMDb. Hopefully the admins rethink their decision.

Fuck not even memeing ;_;
>>
>>79080063
I only used it to find tidbits and discussions on older movies, where retards stayed out. it was very useful in that way, and there is no replacement. using imdb mainstream/new movies' boards was more or less useless, altohugh there were a few gems while swimming through the turds.
>>
>>79080163
I take it you in your early 20s. The wild west era of the internet ended with Myspace. We've been in some fucked up dystopian era since the late 00s at least.

Yeah, I figure the downfall most of us were around to see was 2007, the introduction of the iPhone and 3G internet.

I am aware of but can't imagine the existential agony of the generation before us who survived Eternal September.

Know what's driving me nuts? Of course, s far back as I can remember there were lulcow Christian fundamentalists on the Internet, homeschooled types that were very idealistic, actually pretty smart on general topics but very insistent on their odd religious beliefs.

But just recently, everywhere you turn online there's fucking Muslims. Actual fucking Muslims. And you get to hear their fucking poorly formatted Engrish posts about how Islam means peace and Muslims are the kindest people in the world and America are the real terrorists and you're going to fucking die and get raped in hell you Zionist pig.

Posting memes doesn't actually change how stupid and delusional you are, which is in fact a symptom of how stupid and delusional you are. You're the only people I've ever seen stupid enough to respond to someone insulting you with an example of why they're insulting you, proving them right. It's hilarious, you really aren't fucking human, it's just impossible to be that dumb while still being part of the species.

Get an old Sprint smartphone, like a Galaxy S3 for 40 bucks

Those can be activated on services like Ringplus or FreedomPop. Both of them have plans that will give you 250 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of 4G data for $0 a month while occasionally nagging you to upgrade to a higher tier of service that actually costs money.
