It's better we get a nice lady like Eva Green in the role or we riot

Last thread: >>79041377

Only problem with Eva Green is that Tim Burton might want to direct or write an episode or two.

Otherwise, she's a great choice.
>>
>Peter Capaldi's done it. Paul McGann's done it. And now Mark Gatiss has offered his support for the campaign to have a female Doctor lead the charge in the 11th series of the Doctor Who revival.
>Within hours of Capaldi announcing his departure from the show, fans were already speculating about whether or not the 13th Doctor could be a woman – and Gatiss told Simon Mayo he thinks it'd be "fantastic".
>"I think it’d be really good for the show" he told Mayo on his BBC Radio 2 show. "It’s been back for 12 years which means it’s not the new kid on the block anymore, it’s not a revival, it’s been back for a long time."
>"It’s the sort of thing that would bring an amazing new audience to it," Gatiss continued, "I think it’d be fantastic. But who knows, it’s up to Chris Chibnall."

>Gatiss admitted he knew Capaldi's exit was coming, but didn't realise he'd hear about it on Jo Whiley's show.
>"I was very sad because I think he’s been absolutely brilliant," he said, "but I guess he’s going with Steven Moffatt so there’s a sort of symmetry to it, isn’t there?"
>And as for Gatiss, will he continue to write for Who when Moffatt leaves?
>"I don't know. I don’t live in Cardiff and I don’t have a permanent position around the table," Gatiss explained. "It’s one of those moments, you don’t know what’s happening".

RIP Gatiss Who
>>
>>79058247
Why does Gatiss want a female Doctor? Because he's going to show up at Chibnall's office in his Val Denton getup and say, "I hear you're looking for a lady to play the Doctor?" And then she'll squeeze the Devil's Toad to guarantee she gets her heart's desire, and Chibnall will suddenly decide yes, Gatiss in drag is the new Doctor.

safe to assume they do, Moffat and RTD didn't exactly adapt looms or anything.

This might sound fan-ficy but I would like it they reproduced via pods and genetic engineering, similar to the film Gattaca. I would fit with their strict society. You could even impy that something went wrong with the Doctor and perhaps thats why he never fit in.

/who/ BTFO

>Predictable as ever, Doctor’, says the Master in the Doctor Who episode ‘The Deadly Assassin’. In a similar vein, the Guardian has followed the announcement that Peter Capaldi is leaving the series with not one but two articles about how the new Doctor must be a woman, black or preferably both. Because white males are boring! After all, it’s 2017. As the Hitler Youth said to the 19th-century humanists: ‘We don’t think like that anymore.’

>the current state of the show.

Might not still be the mega hit in the UK that it was towards the end of Tennant's run, but it remains one of Britain's most watched dramas, and the last series was hugely praised by critics.
>>
The real problem with Doctor Who has nothing to do with the gender or race of its actors. As Nicholas Barber notes in The Economist, the contemporary trend is for fictional universes to shrink around the private lives of their characters. Star Wars, James Bond and Sherlock have all lost whatever ambition they might once have had, and have turned into glorified family soap operas. Doctor Who has also been showing strong tendencies in this direction, with the parentage of River Song being a particularly drawn-out, dull and self-involved storyline.

Fact.

Because writers like Moff and Chibnall want to deal with gender stuff, but maybe haven't got a huge amount of subtlety, so the way they go about it is by shaping their characters around the theme they want to write instead of making a character first and then introducing the issue as something within the story.

>"he took what RTD started and sent it soaring to new heights, securing a healthy future for the time lord blah blah blah"
>Instead he stays on out of love for the show
>Now the media narrative is "show devolved into needlessly complex plots, Moffat is out of touch, Capaldi's Doctor failed to connect with the public, probably be cancelled in a year or two, get a female or black Doctor or it's all over"

Seems like the media are almost bullying Doctor Who to get "politically correct" at the expense of shitting all over Moff like the second half of his run as showruiner was a disaster. Poor Moff. Let's get him a picnic hamper full of chocolate and sign it "love from /who/" and get one for Capaldi too.

It's broadcast before a watershed in the UK (usually, series 9 got later and later), and is considered a 'family' TV show. So anything sexual is vague and occasionally implied (eg. Ten and Rose) but not blatant.

Capaldi wants Frances de la Tour as 13.

She's a great actress, but seriously, the only complaint people had about Capaldi is that he was too old, and he suggests a 72-year-old woman to replace him?

Or is that his evil plan—with Frances as the Doctor, people will start saying "I want a younger Doctor, like Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi"?

Philip Olivier suggests the Doctor should have a Romana 2-like regen sequence and go through a bunch of different bodies, with a fake-out ending on him, but then he resumes regenerating after a couple minutes into whoever gets to be the real Doctor.

I assume this means he wants to be 13, but knows he has no shot at it, and this is the best he can hope for. But why does an early-30s gay icon and huge Doctor Who fan think he has no chance while the BBC is talking about finding their next Tennant?

I'm reserving judgment on Bill until we see more than 5 seconds of her, but I think Nardole as a regen companion might actually work better.

Even if there's probably going to be no UST between Bill and 12, it's still going to look like like the other NuWho regens with their "Oh no, my boyfriend is turning into someone else" vibe. But not with his goofy mate Nardole.

>>
>>79062161
YES! I would love her town be the Doctor.

However, I think she has a new CBS show.

>>79061768
And the parenting storyline stopped being relevant as of Series 7.

She's correct that Bond is part of the old guard, and so hhim being a white man makes some sense (although that's tricky. It's not like there weren't any female spies back in the day. But Bond should still stay a man, most likely.)

But what does the Doctor represent? I would say the Doctor represents adventure, the desire for peace, the curiosity to venture into new world's, and the ability to rebel against tyranny. All those are non-gendered traits.

However, there is a subcurrentrade of "the Doctor came from a privileged, overbearing group of people, and learned to fight the bias of the system, because of Ian and Barbara." I've heard making him non-white would muddle the metaphor, which makes some sense. However, I'm not sure if making him a woman or black would really mess up the metaphor that much.

She brings out a good point in that "identity politics" can mask us from doing real action. Every second we're debating should the Doctor change gender, is a second we'really not talking to our Congressmen or government official about women's rights, or helping spread education to help poor communities. Indwe'd, perhaps if we didn't spend so much time arguing about "it's problematic", we'd get more stuff done.

But shows with more women and minority people do effect us. It helps people get used to seeing them, and more importantly, helps children. If they see a woman being competent, it helps them learn that woman are competent. It's much easier to stereotype a group if you have no real examples to choose from. And the Doctor is ready made for a gender and race change. It can give some young British boy who has black skin, or some South Korean girl, encouragement that "there's a hero like me out there. So I can be a hero too."

And that, I think, is worth it.

>>
>>79075381
>the Doctor came from a privileged, overbearing group of people, and learned to fight the bias of the system
He was never part of the aristocracy. He was a scholarship kid (if you didn't get that before series 9, surely you do now?) and a teenage rebel who skipped classes to learn from an old hermit or just get drunk with the Shobogans. Season 1 wasn't about a high lord learning about the need to fight tyranny—that's season 16, and they already did that story with a woman the first time. Season 1 was about a fugitive learning to fight back instead of hiding.

And that's why casting a woman or a black man doesn't muddy any metaphors. Mac Hulke would have told you that it's just a straightforward class-consciousness message: The people are oppressed, and of course that includes the female and black ones.

Don't you dare doubt the Atwell!

In all seriousness, I think she could do it. I've seen a few of her early roles, and even back then she tended to be cast in "old soul" type roles. I thought she did a good job in those roles despite being a pretty young actress at the time. She also starred in a 3-part series called Life of Crime where she played the same woman at three stages of her life (age 20s, late 30s, and 50s or something like that) and was quite convincing. It's not the same as the Doctor, exactly, but it could work. It's hard to say for sure though.
>>
>>79075508

12: Nardole, there's something I need to tell you. I can survive this, but I'm going to chance. I'll be a different man. Different face, different voice, maybe a different color, definitely different eyebrows.

Nardole: Yes, I know about regeneration, we've talked about it before.

12: Well, pardon me for boring you while I sit here dying. Waa…

13: …agh! (muttering) Reverse the polarity… quantum interocitation… etheric beam locators…god, this isn't going to be one of those technobabbly incarnations, is it?

Nardole: Well, that's a mild surprise. River's going to be jealous.

13: What? Oh, I see. The Daleks still have the TARDIS surrounded, right?

Nardole: Yeah.

You think Chibnall's going to bring back a Moffat companion? I mean, it's not impossible, but what makes it seems likely?

Anyway, I don't think Bill's going to die (and I don't think she should). The whole point of the S10 "soft reboot" is to get away from the "darkness" of S9; just repeating S9 or S7.1 wouldn't exactly do that, would it?

Feels so weird that it's only 2 months away. I've already forgotten what it's like to have a season of Doctor Who ongoing.
>>
>>79077624
I predict Bill's going out exactly the way Sarah Jane did (the first time, not School Reunion), either S10E12 or S11E2. I'm not sure why Chibnall thinks SJ had the best exit in the show's history, but he does.
>>
>>79077624
Chibnall has two options essentially. He can either try to pull a 2010 Steven Moffat and rebrand the show from the roots up in the style of Series 5 (imo this would be the best option) or he can try to carry over a few elements like the possibility of Bill showing up in the series once or twice for some continuity as if it is to be believed that she's going after series 10 the character will only ever had been in a total of 12 episodes.

But Chibnall is going to stamp his print over the show and for sure he's going to want his new characters to dominate. I wonder what type of companion he will have alongside the Atwell Doctor...

Hey guys! LooK! I'm memewriting for Hayley-Doctor!
>>
>>79075381

I see gender identity as intrinsic to identity. especially as a tranny, I feel this way. and apart from that from that, though pretty much every dynamic of the series has changed, the Doctor's gender identity has stayed constant. I think that a female Doctor could fuck up whatever works about the formula.

as for the Doctor's race, though, who cares? just cast the right actor.
>>
Just the idea of a female doctor horrifies me
>>
>>79077946
just for future reference, if you want to pretend to be trans on the internet, don't call yourself a slur. it makes it a bit obvious
>>
>>79077868
In my dreams, the Hayley Doctor gets a (attractive, fine, but non-cheesecake) male companion, who's not too far from present-day but far enough that it doesn't feel like every trip home is a trip to every other show on TV. Like a male Charley Pollard, with enough Jamie McCrimmon and Jarvis from Agent Carter mixed in that even the bad writers can figure out what to do with him and Hayley.

And then, a couple episodes later, they pick up a completely unrelated female companion who's from way in the past or future, like a female Steven, but with enough Zoe that even the bad writers etc.

And they only visit 21st century England once or twice all season, and it's not a familiar place to either companion.

What I think is more likely is that it'll be a cheesecake male companion, but with some way to avoid UST—maybe making him gay (not pansexual like Jack) or giving him a stay-at-home girlfriend who doesn't get dumped like Mickey or become a companion like Rory or die like Danny.

>12 and Missy will regen together. Screencap this.
I predicted that yesterday.

But what I'd like to see is this:

Missy shows up a few episodes in. At first she tries to play things exactly the same as with Capaldi, calling the female Doctor her boyfriend and ignoring the sex change. She gets no reaction, so she tries everything else she can think of—catty "you stole my boyfriend, you bitch", lesbian flirting, etc.—but the Doctor insist on treating her as a serious threat over treating her as someone personal. "Maybe that worked when we were the last of the Time Lords, and you were the only person in the universe who could understand me. But they're back. You thought I wouldn't be able to find them?"

Then Missy can regenerate into someone else who plays it different for the next time.

This is 4chan. People use self deprecating language all the time. It's not unreasonable for someone here to self identify as a 'tranny'. So, The Doctor without a doubt prefers the company of women.

If he would regenerate into a chick would that mean she'd be a lesbian? I'd be ok with that.

Guys can we just be honest here, even if we're ok with the idea of a female Doctor and even if the stars and writers want it and make it happen. It's going to backfire! i'm serious the general public who make up the majority of viewers obviously will not accept it and they never will. I give the female Doctor lasting 1-2 seasons max and then they will go back and stick to a male Doctor for all subsequent incarnations.

The general public obviously were never going to accept Troughton, or Davison, or Smith, or Capaldi. They got over it pretty quickly.

The only exception is the fangirls needing someone to lust over not getting over Capaldi, but even if none of them come back to identify with the Doctor and/or lust after the male companion, they've already been lost, so they can't be driven away again.

Hmm. That makes sense. However...Time Lords tend to change their intrinsic characteristics all the time, in each regeneration. If it was about a human changing forcibly gender, like in that movie The Assignment, I'd agree. But the Doctor went from Fifth Doctor to Sixth Doctor, and he seemed to change greatly. And Missy seems to have much og the same intrinsic characteristics as the Master. Perhaps it's different for Time Lords?

(I feel like I'm about to run into a "third-wave genderfluid-positive feminist vs transsexual argument. I don't mean to offend.)

Yeah, I see a lot of people saying that a female Doc wouldn't be accepted or would kill the show, but I don't know why people think that.
>>
>>79078551
>subsequent
There's a big difference between various men playing the role and a whole other gender.
>>
>>79078742
A female Doctor _could_ kill the show if they tried hard enough. For example, go all Supergirl and make all the antagonists female and every other major character except the possible love interests female just because the Doctor is now female, that'd do it. But I don't think even Chibs is that stupid.
>>
>>79078551
>>79078742
Fans seem to forget that the general audience don't have strong, passionate beliefs about what Doctor Who should and shouldn't be. To them, it's just a TV show. I doubt you'd be able to engage a casual viewer in a debate about a female Doctor because they just wouldn't care.

>>
>>79078659
What program are you using to write the script?

And which Doctor?
>>
>>79078837
>For example, go all Supergirl and make all the antagonists female and every other major character except the possible love interests female just because the Doctor is now female, that'd do it.
Why would that do it?

What would do it is shitty writing. The biggest risks is that the writers just wouldn't cope with the simple task of writing her the same as other Doctors, and instead constantly add references to her gender and/or make her seem sexy and flirty just because she's a woman now.
>>
>>79078831
>There's a big difference between various men playing the role and a whole other gender.
Not to normal people. Patrick Troughton is nothing like William Hartnell, even if they can both be classified as middle-aged upper-middle-class white men. The only people who put those classifications so far ahead that nothing else matters are the alt-right on /pol/ and the tumblrs who decided to become the SJW stereotype they invented as an enemy.

And even among those types, remember that this is England, not America. A change in class—like, say, Nine—is a much bigger difference than you probably expect.
>>
>>79078916
>It will be 10th Doctor story during specials.
The only problem is that means you need to come up with yet another reason that some Daleks somehow survived the last time they were all destroyed forever. If you set it before the Time War or after Victory of the Gatiss, that isn't a problem. But if you're really thinking post-Donna Ten, maybe the benefit you get from sticking with that will be more than the cost of YA Dalek retcon.
>>
>>79078975
>Why would that do it?
Because that inherently means failing at the simple task of writing her the same as other Doctors. There's no reason the entire universe should change so that now all the most dangerous bad guys are women just because the Doctor is now a woman, so if they do that, that's already enough shitty writing to doom things.
>>
>>79079049
So if Chibnall kept a male Doctor but made all the antagonists and every other major character female, that wouldn't kill the show? But if the Doctor was female too, it would?
>>
>>79079049
Wouldn't part of that be mitigated by returning villains, though? You have to have Daleks, Angels, Cybermen, Sontarans etc which can't be "genderized" that way.

>I'm struggling with companions
Well, I guess you can't do any worse with your one-shot companion(s) than Lady Christina de Souza.

There are other companionless gaps in the show, though. Look at the MA and PDA novels and BF audios to see where they found room to cram in solo adventures or entire runs with new companions. And Eleven even went off and had other adventures while Amy and Rory were asleep sometimes.
>>
>>79079269
>Well, I guess you can't do any worse with your one-shot companion(s) than Lady Christina de Souza.
Well, if even Gareth can do as bad as her…

But I suppose anonymous has the advantage of not having his entire script rewritten by RTD. "More Chelonians! I love your Chelonians, that's why I commissioned this script from you! Oh, we're cutting the Chelonians."

I mixed up my Dolyist and Watsonian rationales in my post. I will admit that I came up with the Dovlist rationale before Missy appeared (as Missy) and that she softened my views a little (as intended, perhaps).

anyway, in strictly Watsonian terms, I think that the fact that we have seen Time Lords generally regenerate into Time Lords and Time Ladies into Time Ladies shows that they like it that way. the Master has violated all sorts of boundaries and codes anyway, while male and would have done anything to mess with the Doctor.

referencing real world feminist ideas, I do not really taken them as gospel, at all. I think that, because my intuition says that men and women do have a different nature.

I knew a very androgynous gay guy. a hardcore bohemian, who at one time, circa 1970, took female hormones. (either he did not tell or I never asked.) anyway, he said that while in Morocco that a gang of men had found him alone, called him the local equivalent of "faggot" and gang-raped him. when his boyfriend heard about this, the story aroused him so much that he masturbated over it.

now switch the sexes around. would a woman, on finding out about the rape of her girlfriend, then start to masturbate over it? I find that nearly impossible to imagine.

so in my thoughts I make that the go-to story that shows to me that men and women have intrinsic differences, to a greater or larger extent.

for my own experience as a transsexual (see, I used the proper term now) and why I did and some comments make to me bear this out. stop me before I get into really controversial territory.

I have only given a pretty simplified version of my views about real life, please note.
>>
>>79078981

in real life, Hartnell, Troughton (I think, not bothered to look it up), Pertwee (I think, again, not bothering to look it up), Tom Baker and Davison all came from working class backgrounds. (Davison passed himself off as more posh. he also had a father from, I think, the West Indies. not at all joking.) worth saying.
>>

>the Master has violated all sorts of boundaries and codes anyway
And the Corsair? And the General on Gallifrey?

It's not like we've seen hundreds of other regenerations besides the Doctor's and only a handful of them were cross-sex. We've seen that Borusa was a man 4 times, Rassilon was a man 3 times, Romana was a woman 2 times, and… that's about it. Hardly enough evidence to call the three swapped transitions all aberrations.

>in real life, Hartnell, Troughton (I think, not bothered to look it up), Pertwee (I think, again, not bothering to look it up), Tom Baker and Davison all came from working class backgrounds
Troughton's father was a solicitor from a long line of legal professionals. I think his mother's family were mostly scholarly types.

Pertwee came from a theater family, although his father was more of a movie guy than a stage guy.
>>
>>79079979

the General said she had once lived as a Time Lord (versus Time Lady) and did not like it. the Corsair also had a maverick reputation. yes, I know, so does the Doctor, again, but apparently the Corsair made gender-changing one of his signature things.

again, from a Watsonian perspective I don't think it and from a personal perspective also. 'kay?
