Is there any guide to New York City for visitors such as this one to Moscow? >>1216175

Wanna visit NY at new year holidays, so I realize I don't know so much about the city besides some general issues. Is it a good idea to stay at local's found by cuchsurfing? Sould I stay at suburbs and move across the city by metro (and is it safe to use it, especially in late eveninig) or it would be better to stay next door to Manhattan and use taxi? Is it difficult to move from Jersey to NY and back? What is the best way to go from each of NY airport to the city? Where can I buy or check out USA-made wine?
>>
>>1226529
The Time Out guide is the best guide to NY. They put out a regular guide plus a magazine. Best time to go see the regular sites plus they cover new stores and restaurants. I can answer some of your questions.

Airbnb is the agency for couchsurfing though it is illegal in NYC. People have been tossed out.
In the states suburbs are outside the city limits. You mean neighborhoods. There are many hotels outside Manhattan but they might not be near a subway(not metro). There should be a bus nearby. Use Google maps to find where your hotel is and where the bus or subway is.
The yellow cabs have a tendency to avoid the outer boroughs. Use Uber,Lyft or the local livery cab.
The PATH train is the best way to go from Manhattan to New Jersey. It goes to Jersey City,Hoboken and Newark. NJ Transit runs buses and commuter trains to other Jersey points. Get the buses at the Port Authority bus terminal and the trains at Penn Station.
JFK airport:Airtrain and Long Island railroad. Newark-Liberty:Airtrain and NJ Transit train. LGA:MTA bus. Transit is hell there because of a construction project rebuilding the airport.
Any decent liquor stores sells US wine. Union Square Liquors and Sherry-Lehmann if you have money.

Thanks.

>Airbnb is the agency for couchsurfing though it is illegal in NYC. People have been tossed out.
Wow, serious shit. Is it the same both in NYC and in the State of New York at all? How it's going in New Jersey? And is there any legal way to stay at locals' for freel? Are new yorkers hospitable in general?

>Airtrain and Long Island railroad
>Airain and NJ Transit train
What is the terminus of it? Is it Grand Central or Penn Station, or any other?

>Any decent liquor stores sells US wine. Union Square Liquors and Sherry-Lehmann if you have money.
Heh, all what I'd like to found should be as inexpensive as it possible or free. Sadly I don't have a lot of money. However, can I find US wine in average mall somewhere in neighborhoods?

As I understand it right, there is no any ill will to accents in the city so my rough English will be not a big problem, isn't it?
What is the best place to have an everyday meal? Besides evident world-wide fastfoods.
I should not rent a car if I am not going to go anywhere outside NYC/Jersey City, yep? Will it be easier to use only mass transportation?
Is it possible to face with document audit on a street (by police or something like that)? Should I always have my passport with me?
What is the weather in NYC in early January? Windy, wet and cold, isn't it?
>>
>>1226869
>
>Airain and NJ Transit train
>What is the terminus of it? Is it Grand Central or Penn Station, or any other?
The NJ Transit train that goes by Newark Airport terminates at Penn Station. I'm not sure about the train to Kennedy Airport, but you can look up the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey website as easily as I can.
>>
>>1226869
Using Airbnb should be okay outside the city limits though some landlords are not cool with it. People let other people stay at their houses for money. Only relatives let you stay free. They are good so as long as you behave.

Terminus of the Long Island railroad is Penn Station though other trains end at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn and Hunters Point Avenue in Long Island City. The Penn trains are usually on track 1 or 2 but watch the boards.

Use Google maps and when you have a map of Manhattan type in liquor stores.

Not really, the city is used to foreign tourists though with Trump the knuckle draggers are showing up more. Best places to eat:pizza places, delis, halal food carts, food trucks and the inexpensive restaurants of your choosing. Get a guide or go to Yelp.
Keep your passport for ID. Make sure you make a copy of your picture and front page in case you lose it. It is now March and we are melting from a snowstorm with rain mixed in so we have ice drifts. March is very unpredictable in NYC.
>>
>he thinks that moscow guide is legit

Jesus what a retard. Someone should just MS paint a bunch of useless shit that sends you up to washington heights at 3am.
>>
>>1226952
Washington Heights isn't that bad anymore, grandpa
>>
You can take the PATH train from the 33 Street station to Journal Square in Jersey City. There is a bus terminal where the buses go to most parts of JC:NJ Transit, private lines and jitneys.
>>
>>1226907
I suprised that there is two Penn Sation - in Newark and in NYC. One too many stations with the same name, kek. Do you mean Penn Station in Newark? And do trains from Newark Airport Station go directly to Hoboken Terminal? I think Hoboken would be nice place to stay a stone's throw from Manhattan.

>>1226940
>Best places to eat:pizza places, delis, halal food carts, food trucks and the inexpensive restaurants of your choosing
Do you have any canteenes in the city?

>It is now March and we are melting from a snowstorm with rain mixed in so we have ice drifts. March is very unpredictable in NYC.
Heh, as we say it's our climate is bad. Now it's +5 outside, windy but dry, the snow is almost melted.

>>1226952
I live here for 30 years and I can judge this so yes, it is legit. Very good guide even for muscovites to explore their city. Also I'm interested in little-known places do hot included in common tourist guides, so Washington Heigts could be not bad location for me to visit, but next time, now I have not so much time.
>>
>>1227171
What do you mean by Canteenes?
>>
>>1226952
The moscow guide is useful dude. Lol. What's your objective criticism?

Not sure in definition but something like this. Widely spread thing here though. Not very pretentious but completely useful small place for eating with extremely low prices.
>>
>>1227171
Penn Station in NYC is the place. The Newark airport train go to the NYC Penn. To go to Hoboken, take NJ Transit train to Newark Penn station, transfer to the PATH train, get off at Journal Square and transfer to the Hoboken trains. We have buffet restaurants that have food in heated big metal trays. The heavier the dish the more you pay. Those canteenes look like what we called cafeterias, long gone in New York.
>>
nyc sucks during the winter go during the summer
>>
>>1227295
Everything to the north from the south France/Italy/Spain latitude sucks during the winter except mountains. Btw I think I could have a free week in late July, it's possible to have a trip to NY in that dates.

>>1227279
Thank you for answers. Some more: do you have any places that we call "anticafe"? Explanation: a place where you pay not for food or drink but for time you spent in it. Commonly tea, coffee and cakes there are free, it have any activities (quests, card games, musical jamming, etc). Commonly it's the best place for cute girl hunting, kek. Love to spend time in it.
>>
>>1227345
No anticafes in the US. You come in a place, buy it and eat it. And no lingering. Some places have a 30 minute limit.
>>
not for nothing but you'll be better off if you don't have to pinch pennies super hard
>>
>>1227619
> Some places have a 30 minute limit.
God, why? Never seen any shit like this wherever I've ever been.

>>1227840
Yes, it's a common rule I should say, especially in big rich high-developed cities, but I used to travel very inexpencive here. In Russia and the countries surround it I frequently can drive for thousands kilometers and the only thing that costs me money is the fuel. It's hard to change my perception of traveling though. Hitchhiking, couchsurfing, are these things not common in US? I'd very wonder if no. So if I'd have a lot of money I would just book a random 4-5 star hotel in Manhattan with a standard pack of world-famous tourist attractions and then I would not ask such questions.
>>
>>1227867
Not him, but the 30-minute limit is not really enforced if it even exists, as long as you're a paying customer
>>
>>1227877
Oh, that's more better. Anyway, I'm suprised about existence of rules like that.
>>
>>1227931
It's only in busy areas. In Flushing they put the signs up because the old Koreans would chill for hours in Mc Donalds.
>>
>>1227867
I'm not saying you need to be rich though, I just wouldn't advise coming here with the bare minimum.

You'll want to have enough money to eat things (besides instant ramen), go out drinking, and see a few museums (which can be very cheap).
>>
> a place where you pay not for food or drink but for time you spent in it.
I'm not aware of a lot of such places in NYC, but you may like http://www.fatcatmusic.org/gaming.html fat cat. You pay per hour and play yje games. But you also pay for the drinks. There used to be a few gamer-oriented internet cafes, where you paid per hour for access to a really powerful PC and fast internet. But all the ones I knew closed.
>the 30-minute limit is not really enforced if it even exists, as long as you're a paying customer
That depends on the establishment. Many fast food chains (Mcd, burger king, etc) have a problem with the homeless trying to hang out there, so they usually post such signs, but only enforce them when there's a problem. Coffee chains (caffe Bene, Gregory's, sSarbucks, etc) generlaly let you buy one coffee and hang out there all day, if that's what you want to do.
>>
Tips. How necessary is it? Would it norm if I will be not pay it in taxi or in eating? Here we used not to pay it in taxi at all and hardly ever in restaurants.

>>1228214
Sure, I hope about 1K$ will be enough for a week including plane tickets.

>>1228282
>>1227968
Okay, I understand. We call that principle "have man, will article (of criminal code)", that means the situation when everyone could be considered as an offender in a certain situation if goverment want, but commonly everything is ok. Shitty principle though.
>>
>>1228466
Yes, we tip. It's technically optional but it's frowned upon not to.

15-20% is normal for restaurants with waitstaff, and for cabs I just give 2 or 3 dollars for a short trip, at bars 1 dollar per drink is the norm. Tipping at bars is helpful because you'll get better service and sometimes buy backs (free drinks every 3rd or 4th round).

>including plane tickets

Definitely not if coming from Russia. Wouldn't the plane tickets alone be almost 1k?

Excluding the plane tickets, 1K is definitely enough for a week.
>>
>>1228491
>free drinks every 3rd or 4th round
Good thing. Of cause, we have some customer loyalty programs but commonly not in so short term.

Tickets are about 480-520$ now, and will be more expensive further. I'm going to make a visa next week and then I'll take the tickets right away.
>>
>>1228493
I wouldn't count on the buybacks but they might happen if you tip

And is that the price for a round trip ticket?
>>
Should I have some cash and how many approximately? For tips, for maybe Airbnb host, etc?

Where can I buy tickets, especially for buses? From the drivers?

>>1228545
This is a round trip ticket price, of cause.
>>
>>1229134
New York City buses and subways use the Metrocard. Use can use cash fares on the buses but it's coin only. NJ Transit has there own card system and will take cash fares. The NJT buses will go over different zones.

http://www.mta.info/

http://www.njtransit.com/hp/hp_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=HomePageTo

These are the site for MTA and NJ Transit. Read NJ Transit carefully because there is a lot of information. The site can be translated into Russian.

Okay, thanks.

http://www.businessinsider.com/worst-tourist-traps-in-nyc-2014-6
What can you say about this article? I'm sure about that there may be not less interesting out of world-famous places but less crowded, more quiet and cozy, but sometimes I have a feel that it has been written by broolkyner with a butthurt of Manhattan, kek.
>>
Also, how could I visit City Hall Loop and can I do it at all? As I know, there are excursions to this subway station, aren't they?
>>
And is Tenement Museum worth to visit?
>>
>>1229483
>http://www.businessinsider.com/worst-tourist-traps-in-nyc-2014-6

All that info is good but see Times Square just for the experience. It was better when they had the porno theaters and bookstores but the costumed characters want to be paid if you take a picture of them.
To see the City Hall loop you have to be a member of the NY Transit Museum and the tickets sell out fast. And they only do it four times a year.
Never been to the Tenement museum. Go and get back to me.
>>
>>1229547
I found a lot of a good info googling "tourist mistakes in new york", like this another one http://www.escapehere.com/destination/10-mistakes-most-tourists-make-in-new-york-city/

>but see Times Square just for the experience.
Of cause I'm going to see Times Square and Central Park at least once. Not to see it is how to visit Moscow and not to see Red Square though.

>but the costumed characters want to be paid if you take a picture of them.
Like anywhere else, sure. We have the same.

>To see the City Hall loop you have to be a member of the NY Transit Museum and the tickets sell out fast. And they only do it four times a year.
Sadly. I'm interested in subways and other railway stuff. So in that case should I visit Transit Museum?

>Go and get back to me.
Okay!
>>
>>1229554
Definitely go to the Transit Museum.

Do you know how often train parades like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-GAHV4KI08 are? Is access loose for all or I have to be a memer of NYTM too? I would be glad to take a part in an event like this.
>>
>>1230817
It was a centenial parade of the system. Not yearly so you missed it. However during Christmas time the TA will run old buses and subway trains.

man, this site was a massive waste of time.
>>

They still run trains from the 60s and 70s as regular rolling stock. I love when I get to catch an R32.
>>
Don't think there is a new york city general thread here, so I'm gonna ask it here.
How is the club scene?
Which are good, too many tourists, hidden gems etc.?
>>
>>1232118
this is what I wanna know. But are you asking about upscale clubs or just bars with dance floors in general?
>>
>>1231832
They are running old trains at the baseball opening games. The 7 for the Mets and the 4 for the Yamkees.
>>
What are some things to do if you have one afternoon/evening in NYC?

The only things we know we wanna see so far are Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History
>>
>>1232121
nothing fancy, just what is out there. is there similar stuff out there to Berlin clubs(old factories made into giant clubs, Tresor, Berghain) or something like Escape in Amsterdam (dunno if that's considered upscale)
going from bar to bar is kind of cool too though.
some general idea of the scene from a local would be nice to have.

going to New York for the first time this summer, whats the easiest and best way to have a hook up there?
>>
my girlfriend and I are going to stay in New York for 2 weeks in September. I have some questions:

where's a good area to stay for a balance of cost vs convenience? is Brooklyn okay?

will I be mugged?

what's the weather like there in September?
>>
>>1232480
you've got museum row which is like 9 different museums. you got your standard statue of liberty/ellis island, if you go during the summer you can visit governors island too. it depends on what you like
>>1232631
you wont get mugged unless you go to east new york. brooklyn is fine and is the best borough, the best pizza is here
t. brooklyn resident for 24 years
>>
>>1232555
hmm I haven't ventured into the club scene yet, but I can say that the bars in NYC are pretty cool.

But I'm guessing most clubs on weekend nights have a no single guys policy, so keep that in mind.
>>
>>1232631
Most of Brooklyn is pretty safe.

You are very unlikely to get mugged.

September in NYC has great weather. Ranges from a tad chilly to pretty warm.
>>
>>1232645
>>1232658

hey thanks so much guys.

I'm still struggling with where to stay, how does this place look to you?

http://greenpointlodge.com/

it's so so hard to tell what these hostels will actually be like when you get there. I don't really want to risk airbnb if it's illegal there
>>
>>1232661
Great neighborhood. And it's close to Williamsburg which probably has the most to do out out of any Brooklyn neighborhood.
>>
How bad are the lines?
>>
>>1232661

there is zero risk of you getting into any sort of trouble over airbnb being illegal in NYC. The only person who would get fucked is the actual renter. And thats only if they get caught which is basically impossible. I stayed at an airbnb in brooklyn and it was easily the best stay ive had in the city besides being at a friends/family's place.
>>
>>1232661
Its a really nice neighborhood and a nice play to stay but the G line sucks dick. Its moderately reliable but its not a straight shot to manhattan where 90% of the things a tourist would do are.

Make sure to go to the Met!!! Just pay a dollar or something dumb. Do not pay 25$. Keep in Mind the Met is a stupid huge museum. I've been 3 times in the last month and havent taken in anymore than the 18th-19th century european art room and some of the modern and contemporary rooms. It is mind boggling how huge it is.

(This is just the small irritation of someone whos lived in Brooklyn since they were born)
>>
>>1233046
>giving them even a dollar
give those "suggested donation" places a dime or less every time. these places get ridiculous donations from rich people all the time.
>>1233028
usually average but sometimes it can be bad depending on what time of day/time of year or just the place you're visiting
>>
>>1233046
the G isn't too bad, it connects to a bunch of lines that do go to Manhattan
>>
>>1233028
It depends heavily on time. Between 7-10 AM and 4-6 PM it's crowded as fuck, especially in Manhattan, but it's manageable as long as you can pay attention to where you need to get off and focus on staying out of people's way.
