Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread

Ask questions that don't need their own thread.
>>
To start, I'd like some insights.

I can either travel around Europe and SEA and try to keep going for probably one or two years OR I could go to Japan and try to stay there for one year studying Japanese or something.

The first option won't include Japan due to visa stupidities.
The second option requires me enrolling into a school or something to get my hands in a long term visa.

Money would most likely run out in the second option (due to school fees) while in the first I could probably try to cut corners here and there and prolong my traveling.

None are good for my future but fuck my future.

If you were in my shoes, which would you choose?

traveling from cold to warm climate: what to do with my warm clothes?
I'll only need it on the way to the airport and on the way from the airport when coming back. I don't want to lug it through my Indonesia trip though. Already a pair of shoes is quite a lot to carry around, and there's aslo at least a jacket.

I was thinking leaving it in the first hotel I stay in, for a fee of course, but in fact I won't have any big loops in my trip to do that. The only loop is that I'll be getting back to the same airport. But airport storage is quite expensive, when it's for many days...

derp.

seems like a silly thing but I'm quite at a loss.
>>
What is a good backpack size/volume when I want to spend about a month in SEA? It'll be my first trip like this, and my first real travel backpack, so I'd appreciate any advice.

I'm going on holiday soon and I can be a bit cranky without caffeine. Too much coffee messes with my stomach, so I'm thinking of bringing tea bags in my checked in suitcase from my own country. The brand I like pack them in a foil cylinder, but would this look suspicious when my suitcase is going through scanners? I hate to think of getting my suitcase back with a broken lock because of some tea bags.

Also, I'll be packing a box of medication in my checked in suitcase when I'm going on holiday, but I'll need them on my person when I'm coming back. I don't have the slip from the pharmacy as I got the medication months ago, but the box has the date I got them, my name, the pharmacy I got them from and instructions on how to take them. Think that's all good for convincing them I'm not smuggling drugs?

You can probably tell I'm not an experienced traveller.
>>
>>1181500
If you come back to the same airport you could ask a ho(s)tel nearby to store it there. That's cheaper than at the airport.

Or send it home, or donate/sell and get a new coat/pants just before you fly back
>>
>>1181502
I went for 3 months through SEA with a 65L bag. Was enough for clothes, flipflops, my travel guide, toiletries etc and even had space for souvenirs. Though most of the time you'll drop your backpack in a hostel and use your small bag (eastpack/school size) for during the day.
>>
>>1181500
Just go wearing some disposable warm clothes first. Throw them away or whatever when you reach your warm destination.
When you come back, buy a jacket and a warm pants in the airport and go home like that (if you're going by public transportation that has no warmers or are going to have to walk in the cold weather, if not, hell, just get in the car, turn on the heater and head home). It'll probably be cheaper to buy new clothes in the airport than leave it stored throughout your trip.

>>1181502
1 month?
You could easily live with a 30L backpack, but then you'd have to wash your clothes everyday.

>>1181516
There should be some cheap pre-paid smartphone plans with like 5gb data included. Don't expect to be able to torrent your porn with that, it's mainly to check e-mails and foursquare or whatever shit you use to check touristic info.

If you really need to take the tea, just take a sealed box and some kind of proof of purchase and take it in your handbag.
For the medicine, just take whatever you have to prove you bought it legally and that you need it and pray for the best.

What exactly is a visa upon arrival? Do I need to do anything beforehand? If it's "just come and we'll give you a visa" what's the chances of me getting a visa/not getting a visa?

If someone could, could you please give me a rundown on what a VoA is and how they work? Thanks

Yes unless they are locally hired airport staff. If they wear the uniform of a local service/agency/company then I would not assume so however if they wear the uniform of the airline then I would assume so.

100% if your country is eligible, 0% otherwise.

To check if your country is eligible go to wikipedia page on
"visa requirements for X citizens" where X is your country.

Usually, it is what >>1183453 says.

You may have to pay a fee at arrival, it is good to check wih the consulate to know if you can pay it in USD, Euros or the local currency only.
There will be ATMs in the airport if such a fee needs to be paid usually.

Also, even if it's on arrival, you may have to bring specific documents.

It depends from countries to countries, so check the visa rules on the consulate website (of the country you want to go) and see what applies.

Anybody got experience taking travelnoob friends on a month long trip? I dont got huge experience myself just a couple trips to the states and a month in europe in 2014. I was planning on doing another month next may and now 2 of my close friends have hopped right on board and want to come with me.

I dont mind doing the planning and bookings cause I find it fun, but im worried about potential conflicts that may arise.

Friend A is a partier, very social and his only request is amsterdam so im not too worried about him.

Friend B on the other hand will have a beer or two but i never see him get drunk and hes a little more uptight. His mom is really pushing for him to come n hes a great guy but im worried he might get 'bored' or be the first to start complaing about travel time or whatever else.

Im thinking we'll have to spend at least every couple days apart to do our own thing. To keep us all sane but dont know else to do.

Anybody have similar experience or have tips for my situation?

We will all be 24 at the time of the trip n so far I have:
Berlin, prague, krakow, budapest, barcelona, ibiza, and amsterdam on the list.

Walking through Boston last night around midnight on a usually well-populated area but there was only one person in sight. Guy in a wrinkled button down and tie, staring me down the entire time I crossed the street so I avoided looking directly at him. When I'm almost across the street he calls out "Sir," I shake my head and give the classic white person tight lip apologetic smile. He says "Sir!" Again and steps closer, I don't respond and walk past him, and he kicks my foot as I'm walking by to try to trip me. It didn't work and I just went home without any further interaction.

In the future, is it worth reporting shit like this or will the cops not care? I've seen plenty of beggars before but never been aggressively touched by one.

Hi, idk where to post this.
I am learning english and I am training to listen and understand that language.

In a video, I can't understand some sentences and I need a fluent speaker to help me find out what the person is saying.

Here is the link of the video. I am only interested in what the girl at the end is saying.

https://youtu.be/fmPs43yzgTg?t=1m31s

Here's what I've understood yet, sorry for the flood

"I took a gap year before coming to the university and I recommend the experience to anybody whether you know what you want to do after the university or not. I didn’t know if I wanted to take a university or what I wanted to do afterwards. And I took a gap year going to Kenya working as a volonteer in a ???? camp, teaching water skiing for 6 months so it was quite an unique experience. It helped oversee (???) to improve my CV and I had an amazing experience when I was out there and I think it really aided me both getting to university in the first place and applying for graduaded jobs afterwards. My gap year took me lots of skills I was able to use at the university and hopely afterwards (???)
Maybe I guess indepedance and self-reliance and also the degree for responsibility ???? take on a volontary placement and ??? transporting yourself around the world is heavenly ???? than experience before
In terms of transferring my skills to university, my gap years gave me a lot of confidence, you can tell the first week at the university who has taken a gap year or who hasn’t ??? I’m more socially active ???? more life experience and also there is ???? and I guess I have loved that (???????) "

Thanks a lot

So what's the deal with train travel (in the us)

Seems like the worst way to travel, if wanted to get somewhere fast I'd fly and if I wanted to get somewhere efficiently I would drive.

Doesn't really add up
>>
>>1183942

>>
>>1181481
Is using one of the volunteering abroad programs worth it for budget travelling?
>>
>>1183935
Sure.

Obviously it's intended to be combined with other methods of study but it's a very convenient way to practice and expand your vocabulary.
>>
>>1183040
Depends on the country, sometimes there will be a specific documentation requirement but even if there isn't they may still want to see proof of onward travel.
>>
>>1183658
Travelling with friends who have very different interests and temperaments can be pretty hard. It certainly helps not to have rigid plans that rely on all of you being together.

It might be better not to plan too much beyond the first week or so, that way you can adjust based on how things are going at that point. Maybe start somewhere that appeals to all of you, if you want to stick together after that then go for it, if not then go your separate ways.

Tbh I don't know why you have to travel together if you don't have the same interests, I mean you're 24, Yurop is full of 18 year olds doing solo travel and having no problems.
>>
>>1184042
Really depends on the program. Some will provide you with room and food in exchange for labour, others will still require you to pay for the experience. Generally the voluntourism venutres, e.g. staffing an orphanage full of cute brown children aren't as cheap as because they're really about the volunteer, whereas WWOOFing often is a better deal because you're providing a service that is actually valuable to the other party.

I can't tell what she's saying, but she says "higher than you've ever ???"
>In terms of transferring my skills to university,
those skills to university
> my gap years gave me a lot of confidence, you can tell the first week at the university who has taken a gap year or who hasn’t ???
It tends to be those who tend to come forward and are more socially active
> I’m more socially active ???? more life experience and also there is ???? and I guess I have loved that (???????) "
that have had more life experience and also those who are a bit more outspoken on their course and their lecturers love that

To be honest she speaks in a lot of colloquial british terms, not really the best place to be learning 'correct' english to be honest but a good way to listen I guess

Where are you from anon? There are also a few spelling mistakes above which I guess you can see? (put into ms word and use spell check or ask if unsure)

hey /trv/ currently at an impasse here. I'm planning a post-grad 25 day trip before I start my job and am can't decide between the Balkans and Thailand. The closest I've been to the Balkans is Budapest, and the closest I've been to Thailand is Japan.

I'm into cuisines, hiking, languages, and history. Not into whoring, but I like to party and chatting up local girls or other travel slots might be cool.

After I start my job I probably won't have a long stretch of days like this to dedicate to traveling, so I'm probably over thinking this.

Any input? Follow-up: any recommendations on where to celebrate NYE?
>>
Have any of you ever had trouble clearing Customs/Immigration because you looked very different from your passport photo?

I have a trip coming up, and I looked at my passport for the first time in a long time. The photo is over two years old, and I look very different now. Two years ago, I was obese, and my only redeeming qualities were the fact that I had a respectable haircut and I shaved often. Since then, I've lost a lot of weight, let my hair grow longer, and I have a goatee.

And I'm sure there are people with more drastic changes, such as piercings, tattoos, or dyed/bleached hair.

Have you ever been delayed entry into a country because of a photo mismatch?

19 year old, Australian, white male. Have about $3000 AUD so $2200 USD to spend on a trip. I've never really left the country (except when I was 4 and obviously can't remember a thing), and even within my country I've gone like 100km north, 500km south and that's about it.

SEA seems like the best bet because it's cheap and sort of close however, southern Europe seems a lot more appealing to me; but I think flights/everything is a lot more expensive. I'd only want to make it like a 12 day trip, half the trip in pretty shitty hostels, quarter of the trip in okay accommodation, and then maybe a couple days in a really nice hotel.

What's there fun to do in another country that you can barely speak the language in? Where do I meet nice people my age and do some cool shit? How do I make sure it's a safe trip and I get back in one piece?

If I had someone to go with I wouldn't mind just lazing around at some nice tropical beaches and relaxing for a week but I'm going solo so I feel like I should try my hardest to put myself out there and step out of my comfort zone.

I'm edging towards a trip to Italy, hit the main touristy cities, maybe one or two less traveled to cities. What locations are a must see? Where should I skip? How do I make sure I'm safe? When is the best time of year to go? How do I meet people my age? How do I maybe get laid? (preferably not hookers, more like meet a decent Italian girl my age and hang out for a couple days)

Need thoughts + help

ty in advance

Any general first time travel tips are welcome

you should definitely start in SE asia with your budget/travel experience

I recently went to Vietnam (im also a young aussie bloke) and it was AMAZING.

A lot of the people doing Vietnam are going south (ho chi minh) up to the north (hanoi) or visa versa so if you're travelling alone and staying in hostels it is super easy to find some people your age that are going in your direction that you can tag along with, wherever you decide to start.

i spent 6 weeks going south to north, found a bunch of amazing people to travel with, stayed in a variation of hostels/hotels/airbnb and spent WAY less than $3000.

do it, Vietnam is fuckin great.
Italy is lovely but its pretty expensive and not as fun.
>>
>>1185509
SEA is cheap and easy, southern europe is much more expensive and the people don't need your money as much. europe is great but SEA will be more fun and value for your first time. there are hordes of people like you there too, just walk to a bar street or into a hostel.
>>
>>1185509
Italy is expensive, especially if you want to properly experience the sights and food culture the country is known for. You can do it on the cheap but you won't be getting the full experience.

SEA on the other hand is easy to do on the cheap, you can get the full experience without having to pinch pennies. A lot of the best stuff, like the food, is often also the cheap stuff.

So basically you should go with whatever is more interesting to you, however if you decide that is Italy then I suggest you save up a little bit more before you go.

If I have 2 passports, both with no visa requirements to enter the Schengen zone, could I:
>Enter with Passport A
>Stay the 90 day limit

e.g. Fly into Spain with passport A, spend 90 days there and France, fuck off to the UK for a day, come back into the Netherlands on passport B.

Or is all this moot because they'll track it from my name?
>>
I plan on a grand travelling tour that spans 2 years by travelling around the U.S, SEA, and Europe. I am from the U.S and I wanted to know how the 90 day limit works if I want to travel to multiple countries. Say for example, in a span of 90 days, I visit 7 countries in SEA and I decided to go to Europe, will I have to wait to use the 90 days again or no?
>>
>>1181481
That really comes down to personal preference. I like to go super light since I do a lot of walking, hiking, and I usually lug my whole bag to save paying a day on a hostel while I'm away. Because of this I use a 35 liter bag.

My main sacrifice is clothes. I only plan on plan on bringing two pants, four shits, swim trunks, and like 3 socks, with about five boxer briefs. Which I feel is very little compared to what I see other people carrying when they walk into a hostel

Going to Europe in March, have a couple questions regarding entry and ATMs.

First, I'll be flying into Manchester, UK with my passport, bank statements, and reservations for my first hostel, as well as the rest of my travel itinerary. Is that gonna be good enough for the border agent? A week later I'll take a ferry to France. I've read that they want a guarantee that you'll leave the country, such as a plane ticket. Can I just show them my Eurail pass to prove I'm going through their country and not staying? Would a hostel reservation in a different country help?

Second, I'll be using the godtier Schwab checking account for getting my money out of ATMs. The money is currently in US dollars, will the exchange rate into pounds and euros be shit when I withdraw it, or is it all kosher?

Thanks for any help, guys!
>>
>>1188725
Are you from Syria or the USA? Your post doesn't mention where you're from.
If you are from the US, you're going to be fine.
>>
>>1188727
Oops I did a dumb. Yeah, I'm from the US, white and blonde as fuq. Thanks for the reassurance, just don't wanna get there and ruin everything 'cause I didn't bring a piece of paper or some shit.
>>
>>1188725
Did you not buy a return ticket?
tl;dr they probably won't give a shit unless you get a dick agent.

Depends, what is your banks policy on exchange rates? Any fees? Standard LIBOR?
Either way, you should probably take some US Dollars, and some Pounds and Euros that have been converted beforehand. A credit card with no foreign transaction fees would be good too.
>>
>>1188734
Nah, one-way. I don't know when/where I'll be returning from, so it's up in the air for now.

After doing a bit of more research, it seems that Schwab will have about a .25% markup on exchange rates, which is just fine with me. They'll also reimburse you for any transaction fees that any ATMs occur, and they have no fees themselves.
>>
>>1188738
You know you probably paid double for the one way than the total of what the round trip would have cost.
Just a tip for the future, pick a city and get a round trip to/from that city and just make it back there when you need to. Alternatively, know roughly where you want to end and do the return leg from there.
Still take cash. Last place you want to find yourself is cashless and unable to pull money for whatever reason.
>>
>>1188750
Thanks for the tips, though I think I got a decent deal on the flight, $429 from Phoenix to Manchester. Think that's an alright price for a one-way?
>>
>>1188751
Yea not bad. Usually it looks more like $1000 round trip from the US to Europe and $2500 one way. As a rule of thumb, the round trip is almost always cheaper than a one way.
>>
>>1188753
Yeah I would've gone with the round trip, but I'll be over there for as long as my 5 grand can sustain me, and beyond assuming 100 dollars a day, of course there's no way to know how long that'll be, so I figured derping about by the seat of my pants was the best option

I plan on spending a year or two traveling, teaching English, after I finish graduate school within the next two years. What are skills that /trv/ think are essential to learn for backpacking around?

This is probably my fedora talking, but I've been doing a bit of martial arts, just in case someone tries to rape my beautiful little bubble butt in the seedier parts of towns or something. If you give a shit, I'd recommend Brazilian jiu-jitsu or boxing, since (at least in my experience) they that actually have some application in a street fight.

If you can't afford/don't have access to any schools or dojos, just box and wrestle with your friends. On top of being fun, it'll teach you at least how to take a punch. That's what I did for years before any formal schooling.

+1 for the motorcycle tho, that's damn good to know in South America and shit. I'd also recommend learning how to drive manual if you don't know how currently.
>>
>>1188875
How to pick up basic understanding of languages, how to tell which way is north and how to navigate/read a map, how to be aware of your surroundings and instinctively know when something is wrong or out of place, how to blend in, how to find good hiding places, how to say no, and how to learn the most from your experiences.
The last one is big; there's a lesson to be had everywhere. Most of the skills you want for traveling are picked up by experience and being street smart/having good instincts so knowing how to develop them is important.

>>1189064
>I'd recommend Brazilian jiu-jitsu or boxing, since (at least in my experience) they that actually have some application in a street fight.
"no"
Both of those on their own are fucking awful for street fights and ambushes. Boxing is too rigid and focused on punching and footwork in a nice flat, open area. BJJ is too focused on grappling; the last place you want to find yourself in a fight with multiple opponents is on the ground locked in with one. Both are too focused.
The most useful for self defense are full body, close quarters, combatives-style systems. Krav Maga, Systema, and MCMAP being the big ones, and to a lesser extent Escrima and Pencak Silat. All of these will incorporate grappling if you do end up on the ground, but won't be as focused as BJJ and will teach more appropriate striking and footwork than boxing would for a street fight. More importantly, they'll cover defense against the "unconventional" type of fighting you're most likely to encounter irl and how to deal with weapons, multiple opponents, and ending fights as quickly and decisively as possible.

Other than that, agree with learning how to drive manual.
>>
>>1189144
I mean I was gonna suggest Bujinkan, but I assumed there isn't a dojo where he is. Yeah, Krav or MCMAP are probably better alternatives for street fights, but I don't have any experience with those, so I didn't suggest them. And I'm not saying "Oh, there 5 guys surrounding you. Take one down and put him in an arm bar." That'd be dumb as shit. But if one dude corners you in an alley, I'd rather know how to get him on the ground and break his arm than not. Same thing with boxing; simply knowing how to throw a proper punch puts you in a much better position in terms of self defense. I mostly suggested those two cause I have experience in them, and I think any of the moves can be useful in a fight, even if you have to modify them a bit (ie breaking an arm in a bar instead of making the guy tap out).

Plus I feel like people in Krav Maga classes are gonna be tacticool kids and BJJ is like weebs, and I'd rather deal with the weebs personally.

Is it too early to start booking plane tickets/accommodation for next summer. If I book a ticket on something like KAYAK or SkyScanner can the times randomly change. If they do or if I have to cancel can I get a refund?

Also I saw before that there are certain days where its cheaper to book tickets and then cheaper days to fly out. Is that true?
Sorry that these are relatively common questions
>>
>>1189878
>Is it too early to start booking plane tickets
No, but the sweet spot in prices tends to be inside a window about 3 months out.
>can the times randomly change.
yes, but usually only by a few minutes. e.g. 6:45 to 6:30 departure
>If they do or if I have to cancel can I get a refund?
Bottom line is check the terms from where you're getting your ticket. Generally speaking, a change in itinerary will give you the option to cancel or change the flight.

>there are certain days where its cheaper to book tickets and then cheaper days to fly out. Is that true?
Yes. The latter makes more of a difference than the former and neither is a hard and fast thing (e.g. always cheaper on a Tuesday). It varies from airline, to country, to route, and because of several other factors. The closest thing to a hard rule you'll get for this is to follow supply and demand principles.
i.e. It'll be cheaper to fly a heavy business route on a day with few business travelers
Rule of thumb: Booking on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday tends to be the cheapest. Flying out on those same days or Sunday night (intl) tends to be cheapest.
To elaborate, anyone flying on business will probably not be flying an international route on Sunday night because they won't make it to work on Monday. This means there's only civilian fliers on the route and more open seats that the airline is selling for cheaper to fill up.
Another trick it to look at nearby airports, but that gets a bit more complicated and depends on your itinerary.

Thanks guys. I'll take a good look around, see what self-defense courses there are to take. Probably slim pickings as I'm in a rural area, but it might be good to learn something. If possible, I'd love to try picking up techniques while out travelling but I'm sure then you can only get barebones stuff from a couple of lessons.

And I'll work on my people-reading skills, though I'm already pretty decent at observation.
>>
>>1189064
BJJ is loads of fun, but not useful in a street fight. Rather just ground & pound than submit. Krav maga + running is the best self defense.

I don't have that many friends but the ones I do have either have no interest, or can't afford to travel with me. I want to backpack around in Europe a bit next summer, but I'm afraid to pull the trigger. My grandmother lives in Germany so that can be a "safe" place for me to visit.

I've never traveled alone before and I've never been outside the West let alone Asia, always direct flights too. I bought round trip flight to Bangkok through British Airlines.

During the layover (Heathrow) will I need to check bags in again?

Is it better to check in online or at the desk for someone who is clueless?

Is this shit as complicated as it seems?
>>
>>1190260
>During the layover (Heathrow) will I need to check bags in again?
It depends on a few things, like if you're switching airlines, How long the layover is, etc.
Generally speaking, if you're on BA the whole way and you're not leaving the airport, and there's less than 12hrs between connections. Your bags should be checked all the way through.
Either way they'll make it clear at some point.

>Is it better to check in online or at the desk for someone who is clueless?
Most airlines just have kiosks now with gate agents roaming around. For peace of mind and so you can ask all your questions you may as well check in at the airport. Just arrive with plenty of time.

>Is this shit as complicated as it seems?
Usually no. Some airlines/airports are known to do some fucktarded things (looking at you Mexico City...), but usually things are done in a way to make everything as simple and efficient as possible.
Think of it this way... how many people dumber than you or people who have never set foot in an airport manage to figure out how to do all this every single day? flying is designed to be as idiot proof as possible because all those people getting lost or being unable to figure it out would be a disaster for everyone involved.

There's no special type of bank account, it's going to depend on each individual bank's policies. What you're going to want to look for is a bank account with a debit card that has a large network of ATMs so you don't get charged out of network fees and no foreign transaction fees.
It's easier to find a credit card with no foreign transaction fees and to just use that for your purchases so you don't have to withdraw cash. Obviously you won't be able to pay everything with a credit card but you can cut down on the amount of cash you'll need to withdraw.

>>1190301
Kind of going against your stipulation, but Google Earth works well for this. You can zoom around into specific areas and see a bunch of different goetagged pictures and vids from several different sources (Panoramio, 360 cities, gigapan, etc.) depending on what you have selected.

What photo sharing site would be ideal for travel photos?

I just want a convenient way to store photos and show them off to friends, family, and coworkers.

It seems like it. I'm a dumb phone kinda' guy. I'm wanting to go abroad though, and I think I might have to bite the bullet and get a smart phone. Apps like couchsurfing, wwoof, maps, hostels, etc. It just seems like there's too much to gain that would outweigh being a stubborn old caveman in regards to technology. I also do not have a Fakebook, I would probably bring it back to life if I went abroad.
>>
>>1190805
You don't need to get the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Hell, you don't even need to settle for older/used models of the iPhone or Galaxy.

You can get something cheaper like Acer, Lenovo, HTC, or Huawei.

Oh hell, if it's just the apps you need, you can get a tablet, which has the strange contradiction of being bigger and cheaper, and generally not requiring a contract. A bigger screen might be more useful for things such as navigation (maps, etc.), and if you're taking pictures, you can easily judge if you've taken a shit shot (which isn't always easy to do on a phone screen).
>>
>>1190810
Thanks for the recommendations!

I think I'd also want a service plan of some sort though, so I'd probably want an actual phone. Plus bigger = worse I think. I'd like something that could fit in a pocket. Probably a small smart phone. Maybe an old Droid so I can have my beloved full keyboard?

On a related note, are satellite phones pretty much only necessary for being OUT THERE? Would a regular shmartfone be adequate throughout Europe?

>I also do not have a Fakebook, I would probably bring it back to life if I went abroad.
Facebook is fun to use if you want to share your experiences with your friends.

However, I also found that it was rather time-consuming. I was basically manning two cameras (my phone & a real camera). I was taking redundant shots with my phone, but in lower quality, just to brag to my friends about this awesome thing that I saw. And that's not counting the time spent looking for a stable wi-fi connection, typing a witty caption for my photos, and waiting for it all to upload.

I think I would've been able to cut a lot of shit if I just took photos with my camera, and posted them when I came back.

>>
>>1190821

That makes sense. It's another thing to be managed. Would be cool to share the experiences, and probably the de-facto way to connect with the friends you meet out there, alongside phone #. That being said, I'd probably revive a Fakebook account while abroad. It's another means of communication, and it can always be taken back down when you need a break.

However.

I AM NOT, AND DO NOT WANT TO BE THAT GUY (ie: everyone nowadays) who is sheepishly puttering around with their face glued to a little LCD screen. I really hate that. Everyone being so detached and distracted, I'll end the rant before it takes off, but you catch my drift.

This is a bit of a long shot but someone might know.
On my several layover flight I'm arriving in Singapore for a layover of 19 hours, with my plane arriving at 3 am and departing at 10 pm.
I thought this was a decent chance to go visit the city/country itself a bit but since the flight there comes in from Bangkok it's only less than 2 hours long and I'd need somewhere to sleep for a few hours when I arrive.

I know there's sleeping areas inside the airport when you go through security but I'm not sitting in an airport for 19 hours. I've also heard about the hotel inside but it's like a 100 bucks for 6 hours.

Travelers of Polska, I need your help.

We're going with a friend to Opener in Gdynia and Warsaw, and trying to add some more places to the plan.
What are some places between Warsaw and Gdynia that are worth stopping at?
For now I've put Malbork down, as it clearly rang a bell when I just stared at the map.
Are there any more similar places along the way?

History and architecture are the main interests, but also open to any random sights. The only thing I am not interested in is the Soviet-era buildings, that I know from home all too well.

What else... Ah yeah, how far in advance you think we should book the fast train from Warsaw to Gdynia? Does it ever sell out?
>>
>>1191504
Ditch Gdynia, there is fuck-all to see there. Go to Gdansk which is like 20 minutes away by train. Depending on when you're going, you could go to Hel at the end of the peninsula for a day or two at the beach. Then take the ferry back.
Apparently Torun is alright, but that's what a guy I met in Gdansk said. Never been there myself.
2bh, I'm not that familiar with the north of Poland. The south is where it's at.

Oh woops. To add: you could try to get a working holiday visa to any Schengen country. Though in practice you could roam as much as you like, you're unlikely to get checked in most EU countries.

So I just came back from America, and my question is this.

I booked a round trip ticket, so I arrived at my airport and they gave me my tickets after I had checked in online.

Then going inside the airport in america it wouldn't register that I had the return trip ticket when i was trying to check in, so I had to talk to the girl that worked there for her to sort it out. My question is did I do something wrong, or was there a glitch somewhere? How are you supposed to get your boarding pass/ tickets on your return trip?
>>
>>1191565
How much time before boarding did you give yourself to check in?

Generally speaking, the latest you can check-in for a flight is 60-90 minutes before they start letting passengers in the plane. The earliest is around 24-72 hours. Depends on the airline, though; for example JAL gives you 1-72 hours before boarding to check-in, and Cathay Pacific gives you 1.5-48 hours.

And even then, these are just guidelines. Even if you are a little late, they're not about to abandon you completely. You'd have be to be ultra-mega-retarded late to actually miss a flight (like 10 minutes remaining).

Seeing as you were able to sort it out, you didn't really do anything wrong. You kind of did, but shit happens, and like you said, it was sorted out.

Tell me about Hungary /trv/.
>>
>>1191673
What do you want to know? For how long are you going? I was born and raised there, so I can talk about it for hours. Without pointers, just going to ramble a bit.

If you just go there for a week, then there's probably no need to leave Budapest unless you have some special interest. Bathhouses are a must every season, but even more so during wintertime.

There's not much general travel-related things I can say that are specific to Hungary, like getting by is similar to the rest of Eastern Europe. Eg. it is possible to get things done in English, but there are many people who only understand very basic English, and German is still a bit more widely spoken, especially in the countryside. Restaurants/bars -- language will not be a problem. People are ready to decipher hand gestures anywhere.

The public transport system in Budapest is pretty decent when it comes to lines/frequency/night transport, however the system of using single tickets is just to fuck people over, so get a 24h/72h/weekly ticket and have it in your pocket every time. Those passes you don't need to validate (that's where the single ticket system fails...), you can just hop on hop off until it runs out. Don't give it to the hands of those droids who check it, just show it close to their faces.

Try market halls around 1pm for lunch. Good price-value ratio, and that's the closest it gets to home made food. Restaurants in general don't sell traditional Hungarian food (I have a list of exceptions if you're interested).
Other than market halls, if we want want to eat out, but don't feel like paying too much, we just go to the closest Chinese restaurant, or a Turkish or Vietnamese if there is no Chinese nearby. Actually the Chinese/Vietnamese presence is probably one of the things that's very different from the rest of (Eastern) Europe.

Speaking of Budapest still, the architecture is diverse to a point that not many cities compare. From Roman era to modern and everything in between.

The Budapest one http://www.bkk.hu/en/budapest-72-hour-travel-card/ is just called 72 hour travelcard (or 24 hr travelcard for the shorter one). Can be bought at any machine at metro station or railway stations (with credit cards, too). Valid for every type of public transport within the boundaries of Budapest.

Do not buy acp for Hungary. You cannot physically travel by train as much as for it to be worth it. Check prices here for reference: http://elvira.mav-start.hu
Basically you can go from one of the country to the other with like... 40 euros, but then it's first class. So do not buy acp.
I wouldn't bother buying train tickets online, as you can pay by card at every station anyway, and the trains are only full on the day of christmas ... sometimes. Not even at christmas, really.

Google translate this http://new.hasznaltauto.hu to get a rough idea about the car prices in Hungary.

I need to check with friends re irl used car business, but there are tons of dealers somewhere between the airport and this place: https://g.co/kgs/PtUq5a
This place you used to be able to buy anything from law degree to kidneys (and awesome vietnamese food! like really good food), so they probably deal with cars as well, but if they don't... Somewhere on the way to the airport from here, going to send some more info later.

Go to Barcelona instead... Madrid is a pretty mediocre city if you want to see a spanish city. The countryside is amazing in that area, if you do go to Madrid, the abaolute high point for me was the 'Valley of the Fallen'. Its a graveyard/valley with this amazing church built into the side of a mountain wih this fuck off huge cross on top of it. Pretty sick.

Apart from that Barcelona is better in everyway. Better party atmosphere. Cooler architecture. Everything is closer so getting around the city is easier. Better footbal team. Also the la Rumbles is amazing for food and atmosphere. Just go to Barcelona, one of my favourite cities in Europe.

I ended up falling off the internet for a few days, sorry.

I would just go with any opel/renault/suzuki/vw/bmw/those sorts of cars. The ones you linked... I mean it's fun to look at, but good luck in negotiating a good price for that. You'll be ripped off as a foreigner either way, so go for ones where you see a price at least, cause there they cannot rip you off too much.

I just checked with friends on how you van buy a car... Seems like you have to get an origin check done at least, and then 6k + 6k HUF for some more paperwork in the local "okmányiroda". Trying to figure out what common scams they have for foreigners. Like just buying the car itself should be easy, but you never know what other "surprises" there may be.

In Germany and France the acp might actually be a good choice -- Bulgaria, Hungary, or any other country in Eastern Europe, not so much.

www.bahn.de has all the train schedules for all European countries btw (also in English), but they only show prices for Germany. So as long as you just need the times, bahn.de is a better url to save in your favorites. (the mav-start link is only good for showing the prices, well, maybe with delays, too...)

Really depends on where you're going, and where you're eating.

I've heard stories about non-Asians going to Asia and struggling with chopsticks at restaurants. But this is an extremely simple example, with extremely simple solutions.
>A. learn to use chopsticks
>B. bring your own fork
>C. avoid restaurants that exclusively use chopsticks

Come to think of it, as an Asian, I'm actually kind of surprised to hear that chopsticks-only restaurants exist. Granted, they're probably a small minority, but one would think forks would still be available for children or disabled people.

As a recent tourist myself, if I can offer up any advice, I would suggest bringing napkins at a minimum. About 40% of the restaurants I've been to didn't have napkins for some reason.

A spoon might help too, actually. One time, I was in the mood for some Häagen-Dazs ice cream (the kind that comes in a tub, not a bar), so I bought one and brought it to my hotel room. I ended up eating it like a goddamned retard, as I bit into the uppermost part into the tub, then squeezed around the edges to push the bottom portion up. Then I later gave up and dug in with my hands like the filthy animal I was. I was staying at an extremely low-budget hotel, so they didn't have any spoons for me to borrow.

Bottom line: bring napkins, and maybe a spoon if you ever get the craving for overpriced ice cream.

Has anyone here flown with WOW air? Like what's the catch? I'm thinking about booking a flight from LAX to Stockholm in February and it looks like the price is only going to be $180 for the ticket, $25 for cancellation protection and $40 for my bag. $265 for a flight to Europe doesn't seem that bad.
>>
>>1194665
The biggest problem with low-cost airlines is often the quality of service.

Problems commonly found in low-cost airlines:
>rude/uncaring staff
>poor administration (double-booking seats, cancelling flights without notice, lost luggage, etc.)
>charges for things that would normally be free at normal airlines (baggage check-in, meals, snacks, beverages, in-flight entertainment, etc; sometimes even trivial things like headphones, blankets, etc.)
>limited special accommodations (like say you were a vegetarian or allergic to certain things, but they can't/won't get you a meal that suits your needs)
>weird non-standard policies (such as no personal electronics on-board, not even in airplane mode)

One very common concern that I hear about low-cost airlines is safety. That is one thing you shouldn't need to worry about. Most countries have very strict aviation regulations, even shitty third-world countries. You might have to deal with some rude motherfuckers at the airport & during the flight, but by god they will do everything in their ability to get you there alive. Nobody likes lawsuits, and there's a reason why flying is statistically the safest form of transport. If anything, the reason why some airlines are so cheap is BECAUSE they skimp on the service. By offering you less, you pay less. They'll pay their pilots and mechanics a decent dollar, then they'll give the attendants peanuts.

Is 1 hour and 35 minutes enough time to switch planes/airlines in Copenhagen?

>Leave Amsterdam on Scandinavian Air at 10:25
>Land in Copenhagen 11:45

I feel like I'm pushing it but I don't have much options unless I want to pay considerably more to get there at 9am and that itinerary has an extra stop which introduces more chance for delays

If there is a substantial difference (like >$600, just like your example), then I would definitely consider the cheaper flight.

If it's a very small difference (say <$300), then I might consider the more expensive flight.

As for reasons why certain airlines cost less, consider reading this post: >>1194677

I recently had to choose between two different airlines with a $200 difference. I chose the more expensive airline because my previous experience with them was very positive, and the reviews for the cheaper airline were just absolutely terrible.

I've only been to China/Hong Kong/Taiwan. The latter two are a piece of cake to get by speaking only English. (You have to be able to get over the accent!)

The mainland is also easy if you stay in big cities, but it adds a LOT to your experience if you learn a few words. People become incredibly friendly even if you just say ni hao. If you leave the major cities, eg. the comfort of the bilingual signs everywhere, then it is still very much doable all in English, provided you are good at reading and showing hand gestures. If you have your next destination and hotel address written down (in your phone) in both Chinese and English, you won't have any problems whatsoever. Know that it many cases Chinese don't even understand Chinese tourists, like someone from Hubei won't understand shit (verbally) when a Guangdong person speaks to them, so everyone is prepared to point at things on papers, to write numbers in calculators with big screens, and to use hand gestures to explain stuff.

I left my parents in Taiwan alone for a few days, even their English is pretty bad. And they loved it.

>>
>>1195565
Do you mean the actual mainland part of China, or literally any part of China?

Because Hong Kong and Macau are a fucking breeze for English speakers (plus Portuguese for Macau).

As an English-speaker, I had very few problems with the English spoken in Hong Kong. I find that Central speaks the best English, and Tai O speaks the worst. But Tai O is a small fishing village full of old people anyway, so that's to be expected.

I have limited experience with Japan, myself. English was just fine in Tokyo and Narita.

If you must learn the language but you're finding it a hurdle, my advice would be to at least learn how to say the following phrases:
>Thank you
>I'm sorry
>I don't speak/understand [language]
>Where is the bathroom?
When asking for the bathroom, try not to say it too perfectly. Fuck it up with an accent a little bit. The accent can be the difference between them telling you where the bathroom is, versus physically directing you to the bathroom.

Learning a new language can be shitty, but what's even shittier is when you need to shit in a foreign country, and you can't speak jack shit.

One more thing, install translation apps on your phone.

Machine translations are only bad for essays. They're almost perfect for simple phrases. Most apps come built-in with very basic phrases (Where is X, How much does this cost, What time is it, etc.)

Really, what are some options that can really be used besides actually buying a last min tic over 800 and only eung refunded half.

There are sites I hear that let you "rent" tickets with your name on them for 24-48 hours for like $20. But that saves little to no time for printing them if possible.

Say you need them for a flight AFTER a layover because ordering before would have them expired. Can't you show them "proof" on phone's email if need be

Just download some apps anyway. There are plenty of dictionaries/translators that contain essential phrases.

Anyone ever got any vaccines for going to Europe or Japan? Wondering since I'm going to one of those two in a few months. American btw

What is the cheapest way to go from Europe to SEA?

I hear the London - Kuala Lumpur connection is the cheapest, any other ideas?

I don't mind travelling around Europe/Asia if it means significantly saving on a flight ticket. It's the biggest hurdle to overcome. I'm based in Belgium so all of Western-Europe is readily accessible for me.

Rome, Florence/Siena
milan, Naples, Bologna, Venice
Padova, mantova, Ravenna, ACinque Terre, Dolomites, Bari, Sicily

In rough levels of importance, last level depends what you're interested in. For example my favorite architect is Leon Battista Alberti, so I made sure to visit mantova. It depends what you're interested in. You don't really have to worry about safety as long as you don't be stupid. Wintertime is better because it's less crowded but it's a bit chilly, esp in milan. I recommend hostels, specifically "ostello bello" in milan, it's great and you'll definitely meet people. otherwise just go to clubslike any other city. tinder maybe.

When do you plan on leaving? I've the same plan except I have a time limit of 3 months and only plan to bring 3000$, I'm departing Phoenix in June. how did you reserve hostel space?

March 7th, so prices shouldn't be as high and less touristy. The only hostels I've got right now are for the first week when my sister is gonna be joining me, so we're actually planning that out proper. We used hostelworld.com for all of it. The rest I'll just do on the fly, even though that's the worst option. I'll see how shitty it is to book hostels a day ahead of time when I get there I guess and adjust accordingly. What countries do you wanna hit?

>flying on Southwest tomorrow
>Southwest doesn't have assigned seating, it's first come first serve pick your seat
>have to take two flights
>for one of them it put me in the last boarding group
>really don't want this to happen because I will wind up stuck a middle seat
>I'm a tall guy (6'5) so it's extra shitty in the middle seat, if I get an aisle seat at least I can stretch one leg instead of having both knees crammed into the back of the seat in front of me
>only option to upgrade to early boarding is to pay hundreds of dollars to upgrade to business class
>would do it if it was only $20 or so but no option
>considering shopping the boarding pass with the shitty boarding group on it to have an earlier boarding group

Could I get away with this? I can shop it perfectly. Will the attendant who scans it notice anything or does the scan only check for the flight rather than the boarding order?

Going to spend a week in the united states, what is the best option of prepaid cellphone chip i can get for basic needs like mobile internet?

I don't want to spend too much nor get into some sort of restricted limit for data consumption

So currently in Madeira and I'm curious if anyone could give me tips on getting weed, would be appreciated and also any recommended bars/strip clubs. Thanks in advance.

Looks like a Palladian country house, viewed from behind.

Poysonally, I wouldn't. Though you might make it work and get an earlier boarding group, if they/their computer catches you, I'd imagine it'd be a severe offense and the consequences would never be the same.

Next time try photoshopping the entire boarding pass.

I mean, just say Trump became president, too, when they catch you.

If you cannot pay $20 for this, better suffer.

The most legal thing I would do is before checking in, I would ask if there are any free upgrades available.

Sometimes you can get bumped up to a class higher than what you originally paid, if there are any unsold spots left. It's actually pretty rare these days, but it's not totally unheard of.

What would an unaccompanied minor need to get through an international flight (GCC to the UK), assuming he already has a visa and a flight booked?

A letter from his guardians? Physical presence of his guardians at the entrance/etc.? Phone confirmation?

Anyone been to Switzerland? Is it worth visiting?

Been to Zurich, Zermatt and around Lake Constance.
If you're into hiking and admiring landscapes and aren't on a budget, it definitely is worth a visit.
